We report the first Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of 2-pyridyl ammonium salts by highly selective N-C activation catalyzed by air- and moisture-stable Pd(II)-NHC (NHC = -heterocyclic carbene) precatalysts. The use of well-defined and highly reactive [Pd(IPr)(3-CF-An)Cl] (An = aniline) or [Pd(IPr)(cin)Cl] (cin = cinnamyl) Pd(II)-NHC catalysts permits an exceptionally broad scope of the cross-coupling to furnish valuable biaryl and heterobiarylpyridines that are ubiquitous in medicinal chemistry and agrochemistry research. The overall process leverages the Chichibabin C-H amination of pyridines with N-C activation to enable an attractive strategy to the 2-pyridyl problem.

Concept: MNDO-based semi-empirical methods in quantum chemistry have found widespread application in the modelling of large and complex systems. A method for the analytic evaluation of first and second derivatives of molecular properties against semi-empirical parameters in MNDO-based NDDO-descendant models is presented, and the resultant parameter Hessian is compared against the approximant currently used in parameterization for the PMx models.

Methods: As a proof of concept, the exact parameter Hessian is employed in a limited reparameterization of MNDO for the elements C, H, N, O and F using 1206 molecules for reference data (heats of formation, ionization energies, dipole moments and reference geometries).

The elements of life: A biocentric tour of the periodic table.

Adv Microb Physiol

March 2023

Department of Microbiology, Cornell University, New York, NY, United States. Electronic address:

Living systems are built from a small subset of the atomic elements, including the bulk macronutrients (C,H,N,O,P,S) and ions (Mg,K,Na,Ca) together with a small but variable set of trace elements (micronutrients). Here, we provide a global survey of how chemical elements contribute to life. We define five classes of elements: those that are (i) essential for all life, (ii) essential for many organisms in all three domains of life, (iii) essential or beneficial for many organisms in at least one domain, (iv) beneficial to at least some species, and (v) of no known beneficial use.

Acta Crystallogr C Struct Chem

April 2023

Department of Chemistry, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 2101 Fourth Avenue, Stevens Point, WI 54481, USA.

The present study evaluates the potential combination of charge-transfer electron-donor-acceptor π-π complexation and C-H hydrogen bonding to form colored cocrystals. The crystal structures of the red 1:1 cocrystals formed from the isomeric pyridines 4- and 3-{2-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]ethynyl}pyridine with 1-[2-(3,5-dinitrophenyl)ethynyl]-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene, both CHFNO·CHN, are reported. Intermolecular interaction energy calculations confirm that π-stacking interactions dominate the intermolecular interactions within each crystal structure.

Rhodium-Catalyzed [5 + 2] Annulation of Pyrrole Appended BODIPYs: Access to Azepine-Fused BODIPYs.

Org Lett

March 2023

Key Laboratory of Chemical Biology and Traditional Chinese Medicine (Ministry of Educational of China), Key Laboratory of the Assembly and Application of Organic Functional Molecules of Hunan Province, Hunan Normal University, Changsha 410081, China.

Rhodium-catalyzed C-H/N-H [5 + 2] annulations of 8-(pyrrol-2-yl)-appended boron-complexed dipyrromethenes (BODIPYs) with internal alkynes have been established to afford a series of azepine-fused BODIPYs with good yields and excellent regioselectivity, in which the pyrrol-2-yl unit serves as the directing group as a rare example. A Rh intermediate was obtained to indicate a Rh/Rh catalytic process involved in this reaction. Importantly, the [5 + 2] C-H annulation is demonstrated as a concise strategy to change the optical properties of BODIPY.

Herein, we report Ru(II)-catalyzed C-H/N-H bond functionalization of -chlorobenzamides with 1,3-diynes via regioselective (4 + 2) annulation for the synthesis of isoquinolones under redox-neutral conditions at room temperature. This represents the first example of C-H functionalization of -chlorobenzamides using an inexpensive and commercially available [Ru(-cymene)Cl] catalyst. The reaction is operationally simple, works in the absence of any silver additives, and is also applicable to a broad range of substrates with good functional group tolerance.

Four new 2,4-distyrylquinolines and one 2-styryl-4-[2-(thiophen-2-yl)vinyl]quinoline have been synthesized using indium trichloride condensation reactions between aromatic aldehydes and the corresponding 2-methylquinolines, which were themselves prepared using Friedländer annulation reactions between mono- or diketones and (2-aminophenyl)chalcones: the products have all been fully characterized by spectroscopic and crystallographic methods. 2,4-Bis[(E)-styryl]quinoline, CHN, (IIa), and its dichloro analogue, 2-[(E)-2,4-dichlorostyryl]-4-[(E)-styryl]quinoline, CHClN, (IIb), exhibit different orientations of the 2-styryl unit relative to the quinoline nucleus. In each of the 3-benzoyl analogues {2-[(E)-4-bromostyryl]-4-[(E)-styryl]quinolin-3-yl}(phenyl)methanone, CHBrNO, (IIc), {2-[(E)-4-bromostyryl]-4-[(E)-4-chlorostyryl]quinolin-3-yl}(phenyl)methanone, CHBrClNO, (IId), and {2-[(E)-4-bromostyryl]-4-[(E)-2-(thiophen-2-yl)vinyl]quinolin-3-yl}(phenyl)methanone, CHBrNOS, (IIe), the orientation of the 2-styryl unit is similar to that in (IIa), but the orientation of the 4-arylvinyl units show considerable variation.
