The size of subcellular structures must be tightly controlled to maintain normal cell function. Despite its importance, few studies have determined how the size of organelles or other structures is maintained during development, when cells are growing, dividing and rearranging. The developing Drosophila egg chamber is a powerful model in which to study the relative growth rates of subcellular structures.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to define current practices related to beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor (BL/BLI) dose descriptions in hospitals that provide care for pediatric patients and to identify perceived implications of standardizing BL/BLI dose communication and ordering to a total drug-based strategy.

Methods: A 27-item electronic survey was distributed via 4 pediatric pharmacy and infectious diseases listservs. Survey questions pertained to hospital demographics, dosing communication practices, BL/BLI ordering and labeling practices, obstacles to safe BL/BLI use, and the effects of potential standardization to a total drug communication strategy.

Objective: To describe the validation and reliability assessment of a rubric designed to assess the participants' teaching portfolios and identify teaching excellence among teaching and learning curriculum (TLC) program participants.

Methods: Following focus groups with program leadership at a single TLC program, an initial rubric was developed, consisting of criteria mapped to 5 domains, to be rated on a 4-point scale. The rubric was then redistributed to the TLC program leadership and external stakeholders for evaluation of face and content validity.

Shifting Mycobacterial Serine Hydrolase Activity Visualized Using Multi-Layer In-Gel Activity Assays.

Molecules

July 2024

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Butler University, 4600 Sunset Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46208, USA.

The ability of to derive lipids from the host, store them intracellularly, and then break them down into energy requires a battery of serine hydrolases. Serine hydrolases are a large, diverse enzyme family with functional roles in dormant, active, and reactivating mycobacterial cultures. To rapidly measure substrate-dependent shifts in mycobacterial serine hydrolase activity, we combined a robust mycobacterial growth system of nitrogen limitation and variable carbon availability with nimble in-gel fluorogenic enzyme measurements.

The Use of Effective Core Potentials with Multiconfiguration Pair-Density Functional Theory.

J Phys Chem A

August 2024

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana 46208, United States.

The reliable and accurate prediction of chemical properties is a key goal in quantum chemistry. Transition-metal-containing complexes can often pose difficulties to quantum mechanical methods for multiple reasons, including many electron configurations contributing to the overall electronic description of the system and the large number of electrons significantly increasing the amount of computational resources required. Often, multiconfigurational electronic structure methods are employed for such systems, and the cost of these calculations can be reduced by the use of an effective core potential (ECP).

Purpose: This reflection aims to highlight the ambulatory care setting and its impact on pharmacy student experiential education through student involvement in developing a contraception pharmacy service. Although pharmacist-prescribed contraception has been permitted through collaborative practice agreements (CPA) for some time, the recent enactment of Indiana House Bill 1568 has sparked interest amongst students in promoting this service and enhancing accessibility.1.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an enveloped, filamentous, negative-strand RNA virus that causes significant respiratory illness worldwide. RSV vaccines are available, however there is still significant need for research to support the development of vaccines and therapeutics against RSV and related Mononegavirales viruses. Individual virions vary in size, with an average diameter of ~130 nm and ranging from ~500 nm to over 10 µm in length.

Introduction: Medication errors can lead to significant adverse events. Nearly 50% of medication errors occur during the prescription-writing stage of the medication use process, and effective interprofessional collaboration and communication are key to reducing error in this process.

Methods: We developed a three-part, 60-minute, interprofessional education activity providing medical, physician assistant, and pharmacy students the opportunity to practice collegial interprofessional communication surrounding prescribing practices.

This meta-analysis of 160 semiconductor crystals that were grown in microgravity on orbital vehicles between 1973 and 2016 is based on publicly available information documented in the literature. This analysis provides comparisons of crystal metrics including size, structure quality, uniformity, and improved performance between crystals grown in microgravity or terrestrially. Improvement in at least one of these metrics was observed for 86% of those materials that included data in their studies.

This study aimed to evaluate the utilization of drugs with pharmacogenomic guidelines (PGx-drugs) for personalized dosing in pediatric leukemia. A retrospective observational study of pediatric leukemia patients admitted between 2009-2019 at a single-center academic children's hospital was conducted to determine PGx-drug exposure within 3 years of diagnosis. Along with baseline demographic and clinical characteristics of these patients, data regarding dates of diagnosis, relapse, death were collected.

Escalating caffeine dose-dependently increases alcohol consumption in adult male, but not female, C57BL/6J mice.

Pharmacol Biochem Behav

August 2024

Butler University, Department of Psychology, 4600 Sunset Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46208, United States of America. Electronic address:

Although previous research has illustrated the effects of the consumption of alcohol and caffeine individually, less research has focused on the popular combination of the two drugs. The increase in alcohol consumption when combined with caffeine has led to the idea that the stimulant effects of caffeine may mask the depressant effects of alcohol, and this may contribute to increased binge drinking as the individual feels more awake and stimulated. Preclinical research has shown various effects of combined alcohol and caffeine where several studies show decreased alcohol consumption and others show increased alcohol consumption and even binge-like drinking.

Business cycles and healthcare employment.

Health Econ

September 2024

Department of Finance, Risk & Insurance, and Economics, Lacy School of Business, Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.

Is healthcare employment recession-proof? We examine the long-standing hypothesis that healthcare employment is stable across the business cycle. We explicitly distinguish between negative aggregate demand and supply shocks in studying how healthcare employment responds to recessions, and show that this response depends largely on the type of the exogenous shock triggering the recession. First, aggregate healthcare employment responds procyclically during demand-induced recessions but remains stable during supply-induced recessions.

The role of primary care in improving health outcomes in young foster children.

JAAPA

July 2024

At Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind., Carol Sitzman is an assistant professor in the PA program and Brenda Quincy is a professor in the Department of Medical Science. The authors have disclosed no potential conflicts of interest, financial or otherwise.

Children removed from their biological families because of abuse, neglect, and/or violence have increased healthcare needs and are susceptible to poor health outcomes compared with children who are not in the child welfare system. Developmental delays occur in about 75% of children in foster care. Up to 80% of children entering out-of-home care have at least one physical health problem and more than 40% experience educational challenges.

Analysis of factors that lead to the functionality of transcriptional activation domains remains a crucial and yet challenging task owing to the significant diversity in their sequences and their intrinsically disordered nature. Almost all existing methods that have aimed to predict activation domains have involved traditional machine learning approaches, such as logistic regression, that are unable to capture complex patterns in data or plain convolutional neural networks and have been limited in exploration of structural features. However, there is a tremendous potential in the inspection of the structural properties of activation domains, and an opportunity to investigate complex relationships between features of residues in the sequence.
