Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine if patients who underwent percutaneous liver mass biopsy (PLMB) could be safely discharged after a two-hour monitoring period.
  • It involved 375 patients and found that minor complications occurred in 18.93% and major complications in 2.13%, mostly within the first two hours.
  • The conclusion indicated that the two-hour monitoring is sufficient for identifying most complications, suggesting that longer monitoring does not significantly enhance patient care.

Evaluation of contraception methods in chronic myeloid leukemia patients: A Turkish multicenter study.

J Oncol Pharm Pract

September 2024

Division of Haematology, Department of Internal Medicine, Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, İstanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Istanbul, Turkey.

Background And Aim: Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) incidence has recently increased in younger individuals. With time, given the nature of the disease and available therapies, as well as the existing paucity and inconsistency of advice, worries about fertility have surfaced. With all these clear unknowns, we designed this study to raise awareness among both physicians and CML patients about whether male and female patients of childbearing age were using contraception at the time of diagnosis, and if so, which methods they were using.

Orthopadie (Heidelb)

October 2024

Institute of Anatomy, First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, U Nemocnice 3, Prague 2, Prague, Czech Republic.

The Achilles tendon (AT) is the strongest tendon of the human body. The knowledge of AT anatomy is a basic prerequisite for the successful treatment of acute and chronic lesions. The structure of the AT results from a complicated fusion of three parts: the tendons of the medial and lateral gastrocnemius and the soleus muscles.

The aim of this study is to investigate the diagnostic value of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum levels of the soluble form of triggering receptor-1 expressed on myeloid cells (sTREM-1) in neonatal meningitis. Serum sTREM-1 levels were measured in all neonatal sepsis patients at the start of antibiotic therapy and the 48th hour of treatment. At the beginning of antibiotic therapy, CSF samples were collected for sTREM-1 measurements.

: The management of patients with aortic valve pathologies can sometimes fall into a "gray zone", where the optimal treatment approach is not straightforward. The comparative benefits of sutureless aortic valve replacement (SUAVR) using the Perceval bioprosthesis versus transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for the "gray zone" of aortic valve replacement procedures remain a topic of debate. To further explore this issue, we conducted a study with pairwise, single-arm, and Kaplan-Meier-based meta-analyses to compare the outcomes of SUAVR with the Perceval bioprosthesis versus TAVI, as well as to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and durability of SUAVR with the Perceval bioprosthesis over mid-term and long-term follow-up periods.

  • This study examined central nervous system (CNS) complications in children undergoing treatment for acute leukemia, focusing on patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
  • Out of 115 reviewed patient records, CNS complications were found in 23.1% of AML and 13.5% of ALL patients, with the induction phase of treatment being the most risky period.
  • Common symptoms included seizures and hemiparesis, and various CNS complications such as chemotherapy-induced leukoencephalopathy and Wernicke's encephalopathy were identified, highlighting the need for careful neuroimaging for accurate diagnosis.

Tailored-Biomaterials Based Potential Strategies for Cardiovascular Disease.

Discov Med

August 2024

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Division of Medical Sciences, University of Victoria, Victoria, BC V8W 2Y2, Canada.

Cardiovascular disease is a significant health concern worldwide, and varied effective treatment and prevention methods have been developed. Among these, tailored biomaterials-based strategies such as stents, scaffolds, patches, and drug delivery systems have emerged as a promising avenue. These devices are designed to match the mechanical and biological mechanisms of the cardiovascular system, ensuring optimal performance and compatibility.

Background: The continuity of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) patency is essential for effective hemodialysis. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between AVF patency and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) in patients with native proximal upper-extremity AVF.

Methods: A total of 143 patients with native proximal upper-extremity AVF created in our clinic between January 2014 and April 2022 were analyzed retrospectively.

  • - The BAASIK technique combines ultrasound-guided injections into the subacromial-subdeltoid bursa and biceps tendon sheath to treat shoulder pain caused by conditions like biceps tendonitis and rotator cuff impingement.
  • - This approach increases treatment efficiency by using a single needle insertion point for both injections, reducing the need for multiple needlesticks.
  • - The goal is to alleviate shoulder pain, improve function, and enhance treatment outcomes for patients with shoulder issues.

Comparison of Biological Augmentation in Rotator Cuff Repair Using Inflamed Versus Noninflamed Bursal Tissue in Rats.

Arthroscopy

August 2024

Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery, Musculoskeletal University Center Munich (MUM), University Hospital, LMU Munich, Munich, Germany.

Purpose: To examine how augmentation of a rotator cuff repair with inflamed versus noninflamed bursal tissue affects tendon-to-bone healing in a rat model of rotator cuff repair.

Methods: A total of 136 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to an inflamed or noninflamed bursal tissue application group. After detachment, the supraspinatus tendon was reattached with bursal tissue sewn onto the tendon-to-bone interface.

Postoperative pneumonia (PP) is one of the most serious complications following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The recently developed admission blood glucose (ABG)/estimated average glucose (eAG) ratio has been identified as a prognostic marker in cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to investigate the predictive role of the modified ABG/eAG (mABG/eAG) ratio in the development of pneumonia during the early postoperative period in diabetic patients undergoing CABG surgery.

Biomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub

August 2024

Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, University Hospital Ostrava, Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Aim: The main objective of this study was to determine whether urinary trauma increases the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with severe trauma. As a secondary objective, we assessed the reliability of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) in the early prediction of AKI in this patient population.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of two prospective observational studies involving 179 adult patients with severe trauma (Injury Severity Score >16).

Introduction: The rapid increase in obesity and related problems has heightened the importance of obesity and metabolic surgery, resulting in a continuing search for the ideal surgical method. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), which is the gold standard method, and the relatively newer method of single anastomosis sleeve ileal (SASI) bypass.

Methods: The medical records of patients who underwent RYGB and SASI bypass were reviewed and compared regarding excess weight loss (EWL) and HgA1c, fasting glucose, serum iron, ferritin, hemoglobin (Hgb), and vitamin B12 levels.

Introduction: The gastrocnemius-semimembranous bursa of the knee, which connects to the posterior region of the joint capsule, becomes distended in a Baker's (popliteal) cyst. In adults, it is nearly always secondary to pathological changes in the knee joint that cause an effusion. Baker cysts are mostly asymptomatic, but they may have presentations ranging from mild swelling, a picture similar to infective arthritis, to massive swelling leading to rupture and causing lower limb ischemia.
