Excessive formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) has been shown to exacerbate inflammatory injury and organ damage in patients with sepsis. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) abnormally expressed in immune cells of sepsis patients, and play an important role in the pathogenesis of dysregulated immune responses. However, the functions of circRNAs in NET formation during sepsis remain unknown.

As chemical substances corrode the airway, which leads to persistent necrotic shedding of the respiratory mucosa and scarring contracture as the airway heals, a proportion of patients develop airway stenosis, requiring more aggressive treatment or even surgery. A 38-year-old female chemical factory worker sustained an inhalation injury due to exposure to reactive substances (liquid and smoke) during production.

Background: Chemical eye injuries are potentially sight-threatening injuries, representing 10-22% of all ocular trauma presentations. Prompt assessment and management of chemical eye injuries in general practice and urgent care clinic settings can prevent patients from losing vision.
Objective: This article presents a clinically useful guide for general practitioners to support the primary management of chemical-related eye injuries, particularly in rural and regional settings.

Alkali caustic exposures can occur in the workplace with industrial chemicals, or in the home with common household products. These exposures, whether accidental or intentional, create risk for death or acute injury, such as airway compromise and esophageal or gastric perforation, as well as long-term complications such as stricture formation. Swift diagnosis and grading of these injuries will guide management options and are essential to reduce morbidity and mortality in these patients.

Oats are gluten-free cereals rich in dietary fiber, -glucans, phenolic acids, flavonoids, carotenoids, vitamin E, and phytosterols. They have been used in traditional medicine for centuries to treat hyperacidity, acute pancreatitis, burns, and skin inflammation. This study assessed the nutritional and phenolic profile of oat flour (OF) and ground oat husks (OHs) from white, brown, and black hulled oat genotypes, as well as the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of their extracts.

The more science progresses, the more life and society change. Medicine also changes with the times and the culture. This is also true for radiation emergency medicine, which includes dose-assessment leading to diagnosis, treatment, medical follow-up and prognosis of persons who have developed acute injury or illness due to radioactive contamination or radiation exposure.

The Society of Toxicology 2024 meeting assembled risk assessors, epidemiologists, and toxicologists to discuss the utility of integrating epidemiologic data into the derivation of reference values. Advantages of the use of epidemiologic evidence include (i) human relevance; (ii) increased likelihood that exposure levels are relevant to risk assessment; and (iii) incorporation of uncertainties attributed to co-exposures or other population-based considerations. The workshop panelists discussed the challenges of incorporating epidemiologic evidence due to uncertain exposure measurements, confounding, heterogeneity, and inherent study design limitations.

Weed management is an essential intervention for maintaining food security and protecting biodiversity but is heavily reliant on chemical control measures (, herbicides). Concerningly, only one herbicide has been developed with a new mode of action (MOA) since the 1980s. Therefore, alternative strategies for preventing weed growth need to be explored.

High-pressure injection injuries of the hand occur after contact with the nozzle of a high-pressure injecting system such as a paint gun or air compressor, usually on the non-dominant hand of industrial laborers. The severity and real extent of damage in high-pressure injection injuries are often hidden behind a small punctiform wound at initial presentation and are generally underestimated. High-pressure injected material spreads into the tendon sheath, along neurovascular bundles and fascial planes, resulting in neurovascular compromise and acute compartment syndrome.

Wound healing is important for skin after deep injuries or burns, which can lead to hospitalization, long-term morbidity, and mortality. In this field, tissue-engineered skin substitutes have therapy potential to assist in the treatment of acute and chronic skin wounds, where many requirements are still unmet. Hence, in this study, a novel type of biocompatible ternary polymer hybrid hydrogel scaffold was designed and produced through an entirely eco-friendly aqueous process composed of carboxymethyl cellulose, chitosan, and polyvinyl alcohol and chemically cross-linked by citric acid, forming three-dimensional (3D) matrices, which were biofunctionalized with L-arginine (L-Arg) to enhance cellular adhesion.

Urban lakes are vital to ecosystems, providing essential services and recreational spaces in densely populated megacities. However, rapid urbanization and anthropogenic activities, particularly eutrophication driven by macronutrient accumulation, severely threaten these water bodies. This study underscores the critical need for continuous trophic state monitoring to sustain fish, wildlife, and plant ecosystems.
