Current study presents an advanced method for improving the visualization of subsurface blood vessels using laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI), enhanced through principal component analysis (PCA) filtering. By combining LSCI and laser speckle entropy imaging with PCA filtering, the method effectively separates static and dynamic components of the speckle signal, significantly improving the accuracy of blood flow assessments, even in the presence of static scattering layers located above and below the vessel. Experiments conducted on optical phantoms, with the vessel depths ranging from 0.

Background: Digital pathology has come a long way in terms of creating tools to improve existing diagnostic approaches. However, several pathology fields, such as neuropathology, are still characterized by low coverage from machine learning tools and neural network analysis, which may be due to the complexity of the internal cellular and molecular structure of the corresponding neoplasms, including glioblastomas.
Method: In the framework of this study, using advanced proprietary tools for obtaining images of histological slides and their deep morphometric analysis, we studied samples of 198 patients with glioblastoma with the selection of morphometric cell clusters.

In patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), simultaneous measurement of intracranial and arterial blood pressure (ICP and ABP, respectively) allows monitoring of cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) and the assessment of cerebral autoregulation (CA). CPP, a difference between ICP and ABP, is the pressure gradient that drives oxygen delivery to cerebral tissue. CA is the ability of cerebral vasculature to maintain stable blood flow despite changes in CPP and thus, is an important homeostatic mechanism.

The prevailing approach for three-dimensional (3D) medical image segmentation is to use convolutional networks. Recently, deep learning methods have achieved human-level performance in several important applied problems, such as volumetry for lung-cancer diagnosis or delineation for radiation therapy planning. However, state-of-the-art architectures, such as U-Net and DeepMedic, are computationally heavy and require workstations accelerated with graphics processing units for fast inference.

Background: Posterior circulation intracranial aneurysm (IA) treatment remains challenging, due to the anatomy of the area and the high rupture possibility. Endovascular treatment seems to be more suitable for these aneurysms, but studies focused on endovascular treatment demonstrate a high rate of re-intervention needing. A meta-analysis might offer a clearer view, being useful in a more effective treatment planning.

Background: The aim of this post hoc analysis of a large cohort study was to evaluate the association between night-time surgery and the occurrence of intraoperative adverse events (AEs) and postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs).
Methods: LAS VEGAS (Local Assessment of Ventilatory Management During General Anesthesia for Surgery) was a prospective international 1-week study that enrolled adult patients undergoing surgical procedures with general anaesthesia and mechanical ventilation in 146 hospitals across 29 countries. Surgeries were defined as occurring during 'daytime' when induction of anaesthesia was between 8:00 AM and 7:59 PM, and as 'night-time' when induction was between 8:00 PM and 7:59 AM.
We applied terahertz (THz)-pulsed spectroscopy to study ex vivo the refractive index and absorption coefficient of human brain gliomas featuring different grades, as well as perifocal regions containing both intact and edematous tissues. Glioma samples from 26 patients were considered and analyzed according to further histological examination. In order to fix tissues for the THz measurements, we applied gelatin embedding, which allows for sustaining their THz response unaltered, as compared to that of the freshly excised tissues.

While irradiation can effectively treat brain tumors, this therapy also causes cognitive impairments, some of which may stem from the disruption of hippocampal neurogenesis. To study how radiation affects neurogenesis, we combine phenotyping of subpopulations of hippocampal neural stem and progenitor cells with double- and triple S-phase labeling paradigms. Using this approach, we reveal new features of division, survival, and differentiation of neural stem and progenitor cells after exposure to gamma radiation.

The relationship between molecular genetic and metabolic disorders is one of the challenges of modern oncology. In this review, we consider lipid metabolism and its changes as one of the factors of oncogenesis of glial tumors. Also, we demonstrate that the genome and the metabolome are interconnected by a large number of links, and the metabolic pathways, during their reorganization, are able to drastically affect the genetic structure of the cell and, in particular, cause its tumor transformation.
