Chitosan in Oral Drug Delivery Formulations: A Review.

Pharmaceutics

September 2023

Chitkara School of Pharmacy, Chitkara University, Baddi 174103, Himachal Pradesh, India.

Nanoformulations have become increasingly useful as drug delivery technologies in recent decades. As therapeutics, oral administration is the most common delivery method, although it is not always the most effective route because of challenges with swallowing, gastrointestinal discomfort, low solubility, and poor absorption. One of the most significant barriers that medications must overcome to exert a therapeutic effect is the impact of the first hepatic transit.

In this study, extracts of -roasted coffee were obtained using various extraction techniques, including subcritical fluid extractions using HFC-134a and HCFC-22 under room-temperature batch extraction, frozen-temperature batch extraction, and continuous extraction conditions. Additionally, supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO) extraction was performed using ethanol and tetrahydrofuran as co-solvents. These extractions were performed due to the presence of potent antioxidants and antibacterial substances in the extracts.

Article Synopsis
  • In birds, sex is genetically determined, but the specific molecular mechanisms are not fully understood, particularly around the Z sex chromosome (chrZ).
  • The study analyzes transcriptional activities of male and female fibroblast cells from seven bird species, revealing that about 75% of chrZ genes show dosage compensation, similar to the mammalian X chromosome.
  • Additionally, the research identifies RPS6 as a conserved sex-dimorphic gene among birds and provides a complete list of chrZ genes that do not exhibit compensation.

Objectives: To investigate the effects of solid lipid microparticle (SLM) creams containing a long pepper extract (LPE) or piperine on neuropathy-related pain and the expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) as a measure of astrogliosis.

Methods: Neuropathic pain in male Spraque Dawley rats was induced by sciatic nerve ligation (SNL) and followed by treatment with LPE-SLM, piperine-SLM, capsaicin or vehicle creams. The pain score was assessed by thermal hyperalgesia test.

Qigong exercise training has been suggested to elicit beneficial effects on physical functioning, reduction of oxidative stress, and improved antioxidant capacity in women. However, regular exercise training may support the development of antioxidant defense mechanisms and beneficially modulate oxidant/antioxidant responses. To evaluate the effects of an 8-week exercise training on exercise performance and oxidative stress responses in sedentary middle-aged and elderly women suffering from type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM).

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) increases mortality rates in older adults and those with comorbidities. Individuals with certain comorbidities may have a poor immune response and require early booster vaccines. We aimed to assess the immune response after two doses of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine, at 84-day intervals, in participants with the following comorbidities; diabetes mellitus; obesity; cardiovascular disease; chronic kidney disease; rheumatological disease; cirrhosis; hematological disease; hematological malignancy; or solid malignancy.

Explosive and fast body movements, sprints, jumps and quick changes of direction, which are characteristic of the football training, place considerable strain on the hamstring muscles. Due to the high occurrence of hamstring injuries, new preventive strategies are required that focus on high-velocity training. The purpose was to assess the effectiveness of high-velocity elastic-band training in reducing the occurrence of hamstring injuries in football players.

Background: Simulation use is rapidly expanding, with technologies like virtual patients (VPs) and computer-based simulation (CBS) allowing for educators to equip pharmacy students with the necessary skills that are aligned with the demands and expectations of a practicing pharmacy professional. These technologies enable pharmacy students to be exposed to challenging or infrequent patient case scenarios in an authentic pharmacy setting. This allows for the reinforcing of care processes and for techniques and crucial skills to be applied.
