Black rice bran (BRB), a valuable byproduct from the rice milling process, possesses numerous pharmacological activities, including antioxidant potential, but information regarding highly efficient extraction methods is scarce. To enhance the extraction efficiency, ultrasonic-assisted extraction coupled with Box-Behnken design (BBD) was used in this study to maximize the total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), total anthocyanin content (TAC), and antioxidant capacity of BRB extract. The BBD results showed that 57% ethanol at 50°C and pH 3.

Clinical and experimental studies have demonstrated that type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) affects the brain structure and function, in particular the hippocampus, leading to cognitive impairments. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying cognitive deficits induced by T2DM are not fully understood. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of T2DM on behavior, the proteome profile in the hippocampus, and the potential molecular pathways involved in the development of cognitive dysfunction in T2DM mice.

2,4-D dimethylammonium, a widely used herbicide, accumulates in aquatic animals, posing risks to both their populations and human consumers. This study evaluated the effects of 2,4-D on Riceland prawn (Macrobrachium lanchesteri) using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to assess morphological changes. The activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), catalase (CAT), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) was also measured.

Influence of DPYD gene polymorphisms on 5-Fluorouracil toxicities in Thai colorectal cancer patients.

Cancer Chemother Pharmacol

December 2024

Division of Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine, Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, 10400, Thailand.

DPYD polymorphisms have been widely found to be related to 5-FU-induced toxicities. The aim of this study was to establish significant associations between five single-nucleotide polymorphisms of DPYD and 5-FU hematological toxicities in Thai colorectal cancer patients. The toxicities were analyzed at the first and second cycles of 5-FU administration in 75 patients.

Advanced Drug Delivery Technologies for Enhancing Bioavailability and Efficacy of Risperidone.

Int J Nanomedicine

December 2024

Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Burapha University, Chonburi, Thailand.

Multidisciplinary research has been conducted on novel drug delivery technologies to maximize therapeutic advantages while curtailing undesirable reactions. Drugs under BCS Class II often have a low bioavailability because the dissolution phase limits the absorption efficiency. In this review, risperidone was used as a pharmacological model to examine the impact of solubility enhancement at the primary administration site for such pharmaceuticals.

Background: In China, the incidence of hypertension rises significantly with age, resulting in a markedly reduced quality of life (QoL) among older patients compared to the general population. Therefore, it is essential for healthcare providers, particularly nurses, to identify the predictive factors that influence QoL in this demographic.

Objective: This study aimed to describe the QoL levels and investigate the predictive power of perceived health status, self-care behavior, and social support on QoL among older patients with hypertension in Wenzhou, China.

Nanotechnology-Driven Delivery of Caffeine Using Ultradeformable Liposomes-Coated Hollow Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for Enhanced Follicular Delivery and Treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia.

Int J Mol Sci

November 2024

Thammasat University Research Unit in Smart Materials and Innovative Technology for Pharmaceutical Applications (SMIT-Pharm), Faculty of Pharmacy, Thammasat University, Pathumthani 12120, Thailand.

Article Synopsis
  • Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a hair loss condition linked to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and the study focuses on enhancing caffeine delivery to hair follicles to counteract its effects.
  • Researchers developed a new drug delivery system using caffeine-loaded hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles coated with ultradeformable liposomes (ULp-Caf@HMSNs), which improve caffeine's ability to penetrate skin and reduce hair loss.
  • Results showed that this new system is non-toxic to hair follicle cells, increases cell viability, and effectively reduces harmful oxidative stress in cells affected by DHT, making it a promising alternative to existing treatments like minoxidil.

Introduction: Age-induced inflexibility may lead to significant mobility impairments and declines in well-being. However, the relationship between the structural and mechanical properties of soft tissue and joint extensibility remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between flexibility, muscle tendon unit (MTU) stiffness, muscle ultrasound characteristics, muscle strength, and hamstring flexibility prediction in older males with hamstring inflexibility.

Article Synopsis
  • This research examined how glyphosate herbicide affects golden apple snail eggs, specifically looking at hatching rates, physical changes, and the expression of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) as an exposure biomarker.
  • The study found that higher concentrations and longer exposure to glyphosate led to decreased hatching success and morphological defects in the eggs, as revealed through various analytical methods such as optical coherence tomography.
  • Key bioactive components in the eggs were characterized, showing that glyphosate exposure reduced these protective substances, which may have consequences for snail populations and the health of aquatic ecosystems.

The impact of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) was explored in a mouse model with non-diarrheal gut permeability defect using 1.5% dextran sulfate solution (DSS) plus antibiotics (ATB) with or without orally administered PA. As such, ATB+DSS+PA mice induced more severe intestinal injury as indicated by stool consistency and leaky gut (FITC-dextran assay, bacteremia, and endotoxemia) with an increase in serum cytokines, liver enzyme, and hepatocyte apoptosis when compared with ATB+DSS mice.
