Objectives: This study aims to objectively evaluate turning gait parameters in Parkinson disease (PD) patients using 2D-RGB video-based analysis and explore their relationships with imbalance.

Methods: We prospectively enrolled PD patients for clinical assessments, balance analysis and gait with 180' turning. Spatiotemporal gait parameters during turning were derived based on video-based analysis and correlated with modified Hoehn and Yahr (mHY) stages and center of pressure (COP) oscillations.

Article Synopsis
  • Bisphenol S (BPS) and Bisphenol F (BPF), substitutes for the endocrine disruptor Bisphenol A (BPA), were studied for their effects on children's body composition and hormone levels.
  • In a cohort of 561 children aged 6 and 8, higher urinary levels of BPS and BPF were linked to increased BMI, fat mass, and altered serum adipokine levels, specifically lower adiponectin and higher leptin.
  • The study concludes that exposure to BPS and BPF may have negative impacts on children's obesity-related measures, raising concerns over the safety of these BPA substitutes.

Case 322: Pyothorax-associated Lymphoma.

Radiology

February 2024

From the Department of Radiology (J.Y.H., G.Y.) and Department of Radiology, Division of Cardiothoracic Imaging (G.Y.), University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, 200 Lothrop St, Pittsburgh, PA 15213; and Department of Radiology, Bundang Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul, South Korea (K.H.L.).

An 81-year-old man living in South Korea was referred to the pulmonology clinic because of abnormal findings at routine surveillance CT. His past medical history included right radical nephroureterectomy for ureteral cancer in 2016, transurethral resection of a bladder tumor in 2015, and tuberculous pleurisy in his third decade of life that was complicated by a chronic calcified empyema. He had been doing well clinically until 6 months prior, when he presented to an outside hospital with progressive right-sided chest pain and dyspnea and was found to have active tuberculosis.

Background: Single-shot suprascapular nerve block and superior trunk block have been reported to provide a noninferior analgesic effect after shoulder surgery with a lesser incidence of hemidiaphragmatic paresis compared with interscalene brachial plexus block. This study hypothesized that continuous suprascapular nerve block provides noninferior analgesia with minimal effects on diaphragmatic movement compared with continuous superior trunk block in patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery.

Methods: 100 patients were randomized undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery between December 2020 and October 2021 into continuous suprascapular nerve block and continuous superior trunk block groups.

Background: The public experienced loss of resources, including their health and property during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Conservation of Resources (COR) theory is a useful tool to explain the effect of resource loss on mental health. This paper examines the effect of resource loss on depression and peritraumatic distress considering the situational and social context of the COVID-19 pandemic applying COR theory.

Optimal antiplatelet therapy after endovascular therapy (EVT) for peripheral artery disease is controversial. This trial aimed to evaluate whether sarpogrelate plus aspirin was non-inferior for preventing early restenosis after femoropopliteal (FP) EVT compared to clopidogrel plus aspirin. In this open-label, prospective randomized trial, 272 patients were enrolled after successful EVT for FP lesions.

Recently non-Vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOAC) is replacing warfarin for the treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). However, the role of NOAC after thrombolysis of acute iliofeomral DVT (IFDVT) is not yet defined. This randomized clinical trial aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of rivaroxaban versus warfarin after catheter directed thrombolysis of an IFDVT.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify associations between the smoothness index of central SBP (CSBP) and changes of ambulatory carotid femoral pulse wave velocity in response to 20-week treatments with losartan and amlodipine vs. losartan and hydrochlorthiazide combinations.

Methods: For 142 (losartan and hydrochlorthiazide: 72, losartan and hydrochlorthiazide: 70) patients examined with ambulatory central blood pressure (BP) monitoring device, we calculated smoothness indices and trough-to-peak ratios of brachial SBP, CSBP, ambulatory pulse pressure amplification (APPA), ambulatory augmentation index at heart rate 75 beats per minute (AAIx75) and ambulatory carotid femoral pulse wave velocity (AcfPWV).

J Med Internet Res

February 2019

The Center for Patient Safety Research and Practice, Division of General Internal Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA, United States.

Background: Electronic medical records (EMRs) contain a considerable amount of information about patients. The rapid adoption of EMRs and the integration of nursing data into clinical repositories have made large quantities of clinical data available for both clinical practice and research.

Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate whether readily available longitudinal EMR data including nursing records could be utilized to compute the risk of inpatient falls and to assess their accuracy compared with existing fall risk assessment tools.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of protein extraction methods on the identification of mycobacterial isolates using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry (MS).
  • The heating protocol led to significantly higher identification rates and accuracy (90.3% for MALDI Biotyper and 60.7% for Vitek MS) compared to the non-heating protocol (61.2% for MALDI Biotyper and 69.4% for Vitek MS).
  • Overall, the results suggest that the choice of protein extraction method is crucial for optimal identification performance, with the heating method proving to be most effective when using the MALDI Biotyper system.
