Psoriatic patients have altered microbiota, both in the intestine and on the skin. It is not clear, however, whether this is a cause or consequence of the disease. In this study, using an experimental mouse model of psoriasis induced by imiquimod (IMQ), we show that oral treatment with a broad spectrum of antibiotics (MIX) or metronidazole (MET) alone mitigates the severity of skin inflammation through downregulation of Th17 immune response in conventional mice.

The criteria for distinction between independent primary tumors and metastasis from one site to the other in synchronous endometrioid endometrial and ovarian carcinoma (SEO) has been a matter of dispute for a long time. In our study we performed a comprehensive clinico-pathological and molecular analysis of 22 cases of SEO. Based on conventional clinico-pathological criteria the cases were classified as independent primary tumors (10 cases) and metastasis from one location to the other (12 cases).

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) may play an important role in both inflammation with subsequent fibrosis and in repair and healing in anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV). We evaluated the circulating levels of MMPs, including pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A), and TIMPs in patients with AAV. PAPP-A, MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-7, MMP-9, TIMP-1, TIMP-2 and selected parameters were measured in 100 AAV patients (36 patients with active disease and 64 patients in remission) and 34 healthy subjects.

Respiratory parameters predict poor outcome in COPD patients, category GOLD 2017 B.

Int J Chron Obstruct Pulmon Dis

October 2018

Pulmonary Department, Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Kralove, University Hospital Hradec Kralove, Charles University, Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic.

Background: Respiratory parameters are important predictors of prognosis in the COPD population. Global Initiative for Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) 2017 Update resulted in a vertical shift of patients across COPD categories, with category B being the most populous and clinically heterogeneous. The aim of our study was to investigate whether respiratory parameters might be associated with increased all-cause mortality within GOLD category B patients.

Bones are a valuable source of DNA in forensic, anthropological, and archaeological investigations. There are a number of scenarios in which the only samples available for testing are highly degraded and/or skeletonized. Often it is necessary to perform more than one type of marker analysis on such samples in order to compile sufficient data for identification.

Secondary fracture prevention in hip fracture patients requires cooperation from general practitioners.

Arch Osteoporos

May 2017

Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Faculty Hospital Královské Vinohrady, Faculty of Medicine 3, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic.

Unlabelled: Despite individual recommendations on osteoporosis management in patients after hip fracture surgery, addressed by orthopedic surgeons to Czech general practitioners, the patients remained undiagnosed and untreated because of provider-level barriers to post-fracture secondary prevention.

Purpose: The goal of the study was to assess whether an individual recommendation on osteoporosis treatment addressed to a hip fracture patient's GP would lead to better osteoporosis management.

Methods: Two groups of patients who suffered hip fractures and were treated at the Orthopedic Department were evaluated.

This review about the proactive sequential therapy (PST) of external genital and perianal warts (EGW) is based on the most current available clinical literature and on the broad clinical experience of a group of international experts, physicians who are well versed in the treatment of human papillomavirus-associated diseases. It provides a practical guide for the treatment of EGW, including epidemiology, etiology, clinical appearance, and diagnostic procedures for these viral infections. Furthermore, the treatment goals and current treatment options, elucidating provider- and patient-applied therapies, and the parameters driving treatment decisions are summarized.

The association of enchondromatosis with malignant transformed chondrosarcoma and ovarian juvenile granulosa cell tumor (Ollier disease).

Taiwan J Obstet Gynecol

April 2017

Gynecologic Oncology Center, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and General University Hospital in Prague, Czech Republic. Electronic address:

Objective: Ovarian juvenile granulosa cell tumor has an interesting association with multiple enchondromatosis (Ollier disease and Maffucci syndrome) and should be considered a leading diagnosis when an ovarian mass is found in young patients with these conditions. Besides the association with nonskeletal malignancies, there is a high risk of malignant transformation of enchondroma in chondrosarcoma as was also the case in this instance.

Case Report: The report uses multiple images to document the representative and characteristic markers of multiple enchondromas in a 22-year-old patient with Ollier disease complicated by malignant transformation of chondrosarcoma and in whom the disease is associated with ovarian juvenile granulosa cell tumor of the right ovary.

Transmission of human papillomavirus (HPV) is a premise for development of cervical dysplasia and genital warts (GWs). This cross-sectional study assesses concordance of HPV types present in GWs or cervical dysplasia in women and genital infection of their monogamous male partners in conjunction with seroprevalence of HPV-6, -11, -16, and -18 antibodies. Blood was taken from both women and men, as well a smear of the urogenital area of men.

Background: The demand for reconstructive breast procedures of various types has accelerated in recent years. Coupled with increased patient expectations, it has fostered the development of oncoplastic and reconstructive techniques in breast surgery. In the setting of postmastectomy reconstruction, patient satisfaction and quality of life are the most significant outcome variables when evaluating surgical success.

Article Synopsis
  • The Czech Republic has a rising incidence of malignant melanoma (MM), prompting a study to examine risk factors associated with it.
  • A case-control study revealed key risk factors for MM, including being male, having altered moles, previous skin cancer, and using sunbeds, while using sunscreen was identified as a protective factor.
  • The study emphasizes the need for enhanced public health strategies for prevention and early detection, targeting populations at higher risk to address the increasing rates of MM and related mortality.

The use of autologous fat grafting in breast reconstruction still requires optimization. Fat survival and calcification are the main issues that affect the outcomes of the procedure. In this study, a cell-based therapy utilizing laminin-alginate beads (LABs) as carriers was proposed to promote cell survival and adipogenesis by providing short-term physical support and facilitate nutrient diffusion of the implants.

Background: Hip fractures are mainly caused by accidental falls and trips, which magnify forces in well-defined areas of the proximal femur. Unfortunately, the same areas are at risk of rapid bone loss with ageing, since they are relatively stress-shielded during walking and sitting. Focal osteoporosis in those areas may contribute to fracture, and targeted 3D measurements might enhance hip fracture prediction.

January 2017

Institute of Biomedical Engineering, National Taiwan University, No. 1, Sec. 1, Jen-Ai Road, Taipei, Taiwan.

Chitosan nanoparticles modified with 10 and 30% urocanic acid (CUA) via carbodiimide crosslinking were examined for an efficient gene delivery carrier. The CUA gene carrier was characterized by FTIR, TEM, SEM and the in vitro transfection efficiency CUA polyplex was tested with HeLa and 3T3 cells. The loading efficiency of CUA complexes with DNA was assessed at different N/P ratio of 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10.

As one of the most common dermatologic chronic-recurrent disease, variable therapeutic options are available today for management of psoriasis. Although topical high potency corticosteroids, alone or in association with salicylic acid or vitamin D analogues, are still considered the best treatment, they do not seem to possess the capability for a long-term control of the disease or prevent recurrences, as their side effects are major contraindications for continuative use. The aim of this study was to investigate whether Dr.
