Sci Rep

October 2024

Laboratory of 3D Imaging and Analytical Methods, Department of Anthropology and Human Genetics, Faculty of Science, Charles University, Viničná 7, 128 00, Prague 2, Czech Republic.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated facial directional asymmetry (DA) in relation to brain laterality among 163 healthy individuals, hypothesizing that facial features may reflect underlying brain asymmetries.
  • Various methods, including 3D landmark analysis, were used to assess DA, revealing a consistent right-sided facial protrusion pattern across genders.
  • The research found that only males showed a correlation between lateralized behaviors (like handedness) and DA, suggesting that higher brain asymmetry in males might influence these differences, while no link was observed between eyedness and DA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the effect of PD-L1 expression levels on overall survival (OS) in stage IV non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with pembrolizumab.
  • A total of 617 patients from multiple oncology centers were analyzed, categorized by PD-L1 expression levels (≥50%).
  • The results indicated no significant difference in OS related to varying PD-L1 expression levels, suggesting that higher PD-L1 levels do not correlate with improved survival outcomes in these patients.

Transl Lung Cancer Res

July 2024

Department of Pneumology and Phthisiology, Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital in Pilsen, Charles University, Pilsen, Czech Republic.

Background: Stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a highly heterogeneous stage due to its subgroups (IIIA-IIIC) comprising both resectable and unresectable tumors. Accurate determination of the extent of the disease is essential for excluding stage IV and choosing the optimal treatment regimen. Whole body positron emission tomography and computed tomography scan (PET/CT) is recommended as an initial staging imaging in locally advanced NSCLC.

Low-grade serous carcinoma (LGSC) may develop from serous borderline tumor (SBT) tissue, where the micropapillary type (mSBT) presents the highest risk for progression. The sensitivity of LGSC to standard chemotherapy is limited, so alternative therapeutic approaches, including targeted treatment, are needed. However, knowledge about the molecular landscape of LGSC and mSBT is limited.

Article Synopsis
  • There is ongoing uncertainty about the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 and HIV, specifically regarding the risks for individuals infected with both viruses.
  • A study involving 536 HIV-positive patients in central and eastern Europe revealed that low CD4 cell counts and detectable HIV viral loads are linked to increased severity of COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Findings suggest that a lower HIV viral load correlates with less severe COVID-19 outcomes, indicating its potential use as a prognostic tool for clinicians treating co-infected patients.

Background: Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression is a standard predictor in the selection of immunotherapy for locally advanced/advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, comedication with corticosteroids or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may influence the effectiveness of this treatment as documented in several previous studies. Due to certain molecular linkages between PD-L1 and corticosteroids or NSAIDs, we therefore addressed the question of whether there is a relationship between PD-L1 expression in NSCLC and the use of this comedication.
