Comparing methadone policy and practice in France and the US: Implications for US policy reform.

Int J Drug Policy

July 2024

Service Universitaire d'Addictologie de Lyon, Centre Hospitalier Le Vinatier, Bron, France; Centre de Soins d'Accompagnement et de Prévention en Addictologie, Hospices Civils de Lyon, Lyon, France.

Despite being among the most effective treatments for opioid use disorder, methadone is largely unavailable in the United States, due primarily to federal and other policies that limit its availability and regulate clinical decisions about doses, visit frequency, and drug testing. There is unprecedented momentum to change decades-old US methadone policies. Yet uncertainty remains as to whether reforms will be adopted and how policies will be implemented.

HIV and adipose tissue: A long history linked to therapeutic classes of antiretrovirals.

Ann Endocrinol (Paris)

June 2024

Centre de recherche Saint-Antoine, institut hospitalo-universitaire de cardio-métabolisme et nutrition (ICAN), Inserm UMR_S938, Sorbonne université, 75012 Paris, France.

HIV infection has been controlled only since the introduction of triple therapy in 1996, combining, as antiretroviral agents, two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and one protease inhibitor (PI). However, among the NRTIs, the thymidine analogues stavudine and zidovudine led to lipoatrophy, either generalized or associated with visceral fat hypertrophy and buffalo hump. These molecules also increased insulin resistance and the prevalence of diabetes.

Electronic address:

Objective: Neurosurgeons demonstrate some of the highest levels of burnout among surgeons, yet little research has been done to understand the underlying stressors that neurosurgeons and trainees experience and the emotional responses to them. Our goal was to conduct a feasibility study identifying job stressors and emotional responses among neurosurgeons rather than generalize findings across the profession.

Methods: Emphasizing a qualitative approach in this feasibility and descriptive study, we strategically selected a small sample of neurosurgical attendings, residents, and fellows at 2 United States academic neurosurgical departments to ensure an in-depth analysis laying the groundwork for future extensive research.

Spatiotemporal release of non-nucleotide STING agonist and AKT inhibitor from implantable 3D-printed scaffold for amplified cancer immunotherapy.

Biomaterials

December 2024

Laboratory of Biomaterials and Translational Medicine, Center for Nanomedicine and Department of Urology, The Third Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, 510630, China. Electronic address:

Immunotherapy through the activation of the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) signaling pathway is increasingly recognized for its robust anti-tumor efficacy. However, the effectiveness of STING activation is often compromised by inadequate anti-tumor immunity and a scarcity of primed immune cells in the tumor microenvironment. Herein, we design and fabricate a co-axial 3D-printed scaffold integrating a non-nucleotide STING agonist, SR-717, and an AKT inhibitor, MK-2206, in its respective shell and core layers, to synergistically enhance STING activation, thereby suppressing tumor recurrence and growth.

Background: In the United States, 35% of all pregnancy-related deaths occur between 24 h and 6 weeks after delivery, yet the first outpatient visit is not typically scheduled until 6 weeks postpartum. Thus, the ability to independently navigate this period is critical to maternal well-being and safety. However, previous research suggests that many women feel unprepared to manage the challenges they encounter during this time, and there is a current need to synthesize the existing evidence.
