Purpose: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) occurs frequently after general anesthesia. We evaluated the timing of 2 mg iv doses of haloperidol on the efficacy of this drug as a prophylactic antiemetic for PONV.
Methods: Ninety-four non-smoking female patients with a history of motion sickness and/or PONV (Apfel's simplified risk score=3; predicted incidence of PONV=60%) were eligible to participate in this randomized, double-blind study.

Objectives: To investigate the level of nerve growth factor (NGF) mRNA in bladder tissue and the effect of botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) treatment in patients with interstitial cystitis (IC).
Methods: A total of 19 patients with IC were treated with 100 U or 200 U of intravesical BTX-A injections followed by cystoscopic hydrodistension 2 weeks later. Bladder mucosa biopsies were performed before BTX-A injection and immediately after hydrodilation and in 12 controls.

The aim of the study was to assess the adjunctive effects of orlistat on weight loss and the influence of weight reduction on glycaemic control in overweight Chinese female type 2 diabetic patients. A randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind, 12-week study was conducted. Chinese female type 2 diabetic patients, overweight (body mass index > 25 kg/m(2)), poorly controlled glucose levels [glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) > 8%], were randomly assigned to two groups.

Purpose: Previous study has shown that multiple intravesical instillations of resiniferatoxin (Sigma) at 10 nM has therapeutic effects in patients with detrusor overactivity. To our knowledge the placebo effect of multiple instillations of low dose resiniferatoxin for neurogenic and nonneurogenic detrusor overactivity has not been investigated. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study we evaluated the therapeutic effects of this resiniferatoxin treatment.

Esophageal acid exposure is common in normal subjects. The aim of this study was to investigate proximal and distal esophageal acid exposure in asymptomatic volunteers using dual-channel esophageal pH-metry with probe positioning by pH step-up. A total of 21 healthy subjects (9 male; mean age, 51 years) underwent 24-hour ambulatory esophageal pH recording with the pH step-up method using a two-channel pH probe, a portable digital data recorder, and computerized data analysis.
