Fluorescent nanodiamonds (FNDs) are carbon nanoparticles containing a dense ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy defects as color centers. These centers have exceptional photostability and unique quantum properties, making them useful for ultrasensitive biosensing applications. This work employed FNDs conjugated with antibodies as magneto-optical immunosensors for tuberculosis (TB) diagnostics using competitive spin-enhanced lateral flow immunoassay (SELFIA).

Introduction: This study aimed to assess overactive bladder (OAB) treatment patterns and factors associated with effectiveness and persistence.

Methods: A prospective, longitudinal, observational registry study of adults starting OAB therapy with mirabegron or antimuscarinics was undertaken. Primary endpoints were time from treatment initiation to discontinuation/switching; proportion who discontinued/switched; and reasons for discontinuation/switching.

Background: Thyroid nodules (TNs) often require intervention due to symptomatic or cosmetic concerns. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has shown promise as a treatment option, offering potential advantages without neck scars. Recently, the scarless treatment alternative of transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) has emerged.

Aim: Antimuscarinics and the β3-adrenoreceptor agonist, mirabegron, are commonly used for treating patients with overactive bladder (OAB) and α -adrenoreceptor antagonists (α -blockers) are the main pharmacological agents used for treating lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). As these conditions commonly occur together, the aim of this systematic review was to identify publications that compared the use of an α -blocker plus mirabegron with an α -blocker plus antimuscarinic in men with LUTS secondary to BPH and OAB. A meta-analysis was subsequently conducted to explore the safety and efficacy of these combinations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on primary progressive aphasia (PPA) in native Chinese speakers, highlighting the unique challenges posed by the classifier system in Chinese compared to Indo-European languages.
  • Results showed that both semantic variant (sv) PPA and logopenic variant (lv) PPA patients struggled significantly with classifier production, with lvPPA patients performing better in recognition tasks.
  • The findings indicate that classifier processing could serve as a linguistic marker for distinguishing between different PPA variants, with performance linked to specific brain regions involved in language and visual processing.

Hybrid therapy is a recommended first-line anti- treatment option in the American College of Gastroenterology guidelines, the Bangkok Consensus Report on management, and the Taiwan Consensus Report. However, the cure rates of eradication therapy in some countries are suboptimal, and the factors affecting the treatment efficacy of hybrid therapy remain unclear. The aim of this study is to identify the independent risk factors predicting eradication failure of hybrid therapy in the first-line treatment of infection.

Background: Renal dysfunction is common in patients with coronary artery disease. Due to the shared vascular pathogenesis between the two conditions, novel biomarkers such as the fatty acid-binding protein-3 (FABP-3) have been proposed for diagnosis and prognosis prediction. This multicentre prospective cohort study investigates the association between FABP-3 and renal dysfunction.

From the traditional Chinese medicine point of view, although extract (HCE) possesses an incredible amount of phytonutrients and exhibits antioxidant activities, excessive doses of HCE can cause danger to organisms and lead to death. In this study, we first examine HCE's overall phenolic and flavonoid content, antioxidant efficacy, and antibacterial activity. Results show that HCE is suitable as a bio-reducing agent for the microwave-assisted synthesis of silver nanoparticles (HCE-AgNPs) with enhanced antioxidant and antimicrobial performance.

Despite high discontinuation rates for myopia optical interventions, limited attention has been given to the potential rebound effects post-discontinuation. This systematic review aims to assess the extent of the rebound effects following the cessation of common clinical optical myopia-control interventions in children. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, and ClinicalTrials.

Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is rising globally, with genetics and environmental factors both playing crucial roles. Dietary habits during pregnancy are linked to children's allergic disease risk. However, limited studies have explored the association between maternal vegetarian diets during pregnancy and child AD.

N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, a subtype of ionotropic glutamate receptors, are important in regulating sympathetic tone and cardiovascular function in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM). Amyloid-beta peptide (Aβ) is linked to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Cerebro- and cardiovascular diseases might be the risk factors for developing AD.

Aging-associated cardiovascular diseases depend on the longitudinal deterioration of stem cell dynamics. The entire mechanism behind it is not completely understood. However, many studies suggest that endocrine pathways, particularly the insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF1) signaling pathway are involved in cardioprotection, especially in stem-cell treatments.

Perivascular adipose tissue and adipocyte-derived exosomal miRNAs maintain vascular homeostasis.

Heliyon

December 2023

Department of Physiology, School of Medicine, College of Medicine, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, 110, Taiwan.

Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT), a fat layer that provides structural support to the blood vessels, is a cushion protecting the vessel wall from neighbouring tissues during contraction and relaxation. PVAT actively regulates vascular tone by secreting vasoactive (vasodilatory and vasoconstrictive) factors (e.g.

Chronic subdural haematoma mimicking extrapyramidal symptoms.

BMJ Case Rep

December 2023

General Psychiatry Department, Yuli Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Hualien, Taiwan

A male patient in his 70s with chronic schizophrenia, who could previously walk independently, developed a gait disturbance without any significant neurological deficit. Initially, his short step length and unstable gait were thought to be related to extrapyramidal symptoms caused by medication side effects. We tapered his antipsychotic medication, but the unstable gait persisted.

Nondisplaced femoral neck fractures are sometimes misdiagnosed by radiographs, which may deteriorate into displaced fractures. However, few efficient artificial intelligent methods have been reported. We developed an automatic detection method using deep learning networks to pinpoint femoral neck fractures on radiographs to assist physicians in making an accurate diagnosis in the first place.
