Phage-based decontamination has rarely been explored in real-world settings, particularly in the environments of patients undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). This four-year prospective study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of aerosolized phage cocktails tailored to combat target antibiotic-resistant species of Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. The decontamination procedure with phage aerosols was proactively implemented before the admission of ECMO patients based on a thorough analysis of phage typing results from bacterial species isolated from prospective patient areas during the preceding two months.

Background: Transvenous coil embolization (TVCE) is a common and effective treatment for cavernous sinus dural arteriovenous fistulas (CSDAVFs). However, some patients may experience residual fistulas or worsening visual symptoms after the procedure. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of transvenous coil and Onyx embolization (TVCOE) with TVCE in treating CSDAVFs.

Background: Results on whether N-acetylcysteine (NAC) ameliorates depression in patients with psychiatric problems, such as bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder, remain inconsistent, and several new studies have recently been published. Thus, we conducted an uptodated meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of NAC against depression.
Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis included randomized controlled trials where NAC was used to treat depression.

Cross-linguistic studies with healthy individuals are vital, as they can reveal typologically common and different patterns while providing tailored benchmarks for patient studies. Nevertheless, cross-linguistic differences in narrative speech production, particularly among speakers of languages belonging to distinct language families, have been inadequately investigated. Using a picture description task, we analyze cross-linguistic variations in connected speech production across three linguistically diverse groups of cognitively normal participants-English, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), and Italian speakers.

Bone metastasis is the primary cause of death among patients with advanced prostate cancer (PCa). PCa tends to spread to bones and acquire the bone-like phenotype, causing osteoblastic bone metastasis. Unfortunately, there is no effective treatment for this condition.

To achieve a consensus on optimal blood pressure (BP) targets for older adults remains challenging, necessitating a trade-off between cardiovascular benefits and the risk of impaired organ perfusion. Evidence suggests that age and frailty have a minimal influence on the cardiovascular benefits of intensive BP control in community-dwelling elderly. Nonetheless, an increased incidence of acute kidney injury with intensive BP control has been observed in octogenarians.

The clinical guidelines for interstitial cystitis (IC) and bladder pain syndrome (BPS) have been revised by updating our previous guidelines. The symptoms of IC and BPS, collectively called as hypersensitive bladder (HSB) symptoms, are virtually indistinguishable between IC and BPS; however, IC and BPS should be considered as a separate entity of disorders. We define IC as a bladder disease with Hunner lesions, usually associated with HSB symptoms and bladder inflammation, and BPS as a condition with HSB symptoms in the absence of Hunner lesions and any confusable diseases.

Background: Diabetes and insulin resistance alter the physiological state of serum albumin (SA), which is a prognostic marker for stable coronary artery disease (CAD). However, whether the SA concentration is associated with long-term cardiovascular (CV) outcomes in diabetic patients with stable CAD remains unclear.
Methods: In total, 1148 patients were retrospectively identified from a nationwide multicenter cohort study on patients with stable CAD.

Background: Oxaliplatin-associated shock (referred to as shock) is a rare but life-threatening adverse event.
Objectives: This pioneering cohort study aimed to quantitatively investigate the association between oxaliplatin use and shock in patients with stage III colorectal cancer (CRC), identify potential independent risk factors for shock, and assess the cycle-to-shock during oxaliplatin treatment.
Design: The study utilized a nested case-control (NCC) design to assess the association between oxaliplatin and shock and employed a case-crossover approach to address unmeasured confounders.

Secondary hypertension in the elderly poses many challenges and requires a comprehensive diagnostic and management approach. This review explores the prevalence, diagnostic strategies, and treatment modalities for secondary hypertension in elderly patients, focusing on etiologies including primary aldosteronism, renal vascular disease, renal parenchymal disease, obstructive sleep apnea, thyroid disorders, Cushing's syndrome, pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas, and drug-induced hypertension. Key considerations include age-related changes in physiology and atypical presentations of underlying conditions necessitating thorough screening with a combination of clinical evaluation, laboratory tests, and imaging studies.

Circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) significantly influences endothelial function. This study assessed the correlation between serum 25(OH)D and endothelial function using the vascular reactivity index (VRI) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Fasting blood samples from 102 T2DM participants and VRI were assessed.

Background: Individuals with diabetes have a significantly higher risk of developing various forms of cancer, and the potential biological links between these two diseases are not completely understood.
Methods: This was a longitudinal retrospective nationwide cohort study, a study design that allows us to examine the natural course of cancer development over an extended period of time with a large sample size. Initially, 3,111,975 and 22,208,395 eligible patients aged ≥ 20 years with and without diabetes, respectively, were matched by age, sex, and the Charlson comorbidity index.

Chondrosarcoma is a malignant bone tumor that arises from abnormalities in cartilaginous tissue and is associated with lung metastases. Lymphangiogenesis plays an essential role in cancer metastasis. Visfatin is an adipokine reported to enhance tumor metastasis, but its relationship with VEGF-D generation and lymphangiogenesis in chondrosarcoma remains undetermined.

Esophageal cancer ranks among the ten most common cancers worldwide. Despite the adoption of neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (nCCRT) followed by surgery as the standard treatment approach in recent years, the local recurrence rate remains high. In this study, we employed RNA-seq to investigate distinctive gene expression profiles in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) with or without recurrence following a standard treatment course.

Background: Both the clinical and mechanistic impacts of endocan were not well elucidated especially in coronary artery disease (CAD).
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the prognostic and potential pathological role of endocan for cardiovascular (CV) events in stable CAD patients.
Methods: A total of 1,071 stable CAD patients with previous percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) were enrolled prospectively in a nationwide Biosignature study.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a low-grade inflammatory joint illness in which monocytes migrate and infiltrate synovial tissue, differentiating into the pro-inflammatory M1 macrophage phenotype. IL-17 is a proinflammatory mediator principally generated by Th17 cells, which is elevated in OA patients; nevertheless, investigators have yet to elucidate the function of IL-17 in M1 polarization during OA development. Our analysis of clinical tissues and results from the open online dataset discovered that the level of M1 macrophage markers is elevated in human OA tissue samples than in normal tissue.

Early-onset myopia increases the risk of irreversible high myopia. This study systematically evaluated the efficacy and safety of low-dose atropine for myopia control in children with premyopia through meta-analysis using random-effects models. Effect sizes were calculated using risk ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs).
