Using the maximum-likelihood method with the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm of PYPOP, high-resolution human leukocyte antigen (HLA) three-locus haplotypes (HLA-A, -B, and -C; HLA-A, -B, and -DRB1) and four-locus haplotypes (HLA-A, -B, -C, and -DRB1) were determined. Linkage disequilibrium of high-resolution HLA-B and -C alleles and HLA-DRB1 and -DQB1 alleles was also calculated. Comparison of the Taiwanese haplotypes and haplotypes from donors in the Chinese Han population, the Asia Pacific Islander ethnic category of the NMDP (National Marrow Donor Program), and the Taiwanese cord blood units demonstrated similarities and dissimilarities among the four populations.

The primary function of MHC polymorphism is considered as the foundation of self-defense mechanism of the host in surveillance against countless diverse invading pathogens. However, this biological function can also elicit undesirable immunological responses that jeopardize transplantations when compatibility between donors and recipients is unfavourable.

Resveratrol reduces infarct size and improves ventricular function after myocardial ischemia in rats.

Life Sci

Department of Cardiology, Buddhist Tzu-Chi Hospital, Taipei branch and Institute of Clinical Medicine, National Yang-Ming University, Taipei, Taiwan.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of resveratrol, a polyphenol present in grapes and red wine, on ventricular remodeling after myocardial infarction (MI) in rats. After permanent ligation of the left anterior descending artery, surviving rats were randomly allocated to three groups and treated with 1 mg/kg/day resveratrol (R-1 group), 0.1 mg/kg/day resveratrol (R-0.

We aimed to investigate difference in the effects of water and a liquid nutritional meal on the parasympathetic and gastric myoelectrical activities. The study was a repeated-measures design in which each subject was presented with 500 ml of water and a liquid nutritional meal (Ensure) on two separate and random sessions. The electrogastrography (EGG) and electrocardiogram were simultaneously recorded in 16 healthy subjects.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared oesophageal function between patients with erosive esophagitis, non-erosive reflux disease, and healthy controls using manometry and impedance measurements.
  • Healthy individuals demonstrated stronger peristaltic movements and more consistent bolus transit compared to both patient groups.
  • Erosive esophagitis was linked to increased transit times and reduced bolus transit completion, suggesting that worsening mucosal damage may contribute to these functional differences.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined sleep quality in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), specifically comparing those with nonerosive esophageal reflux disease (NERD) and erosive esophagitis to healthy controls.
  • Findings revealed that both NERD and erosive esophagitis patients experienced significant sleep disturbances, as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), while healthy subjects did not.
  • The results indicate that NERD affects sleep quality similarly to erosive esophagitis, suggesting that treatment for NERD should be as aggressive as for erosive esophagitis.

Determination of HLA-A, -B and -DRB1 haplotypes based on allelic homozygosity data in selected bone marrow donors of the Taiwanese marrow donor registry.

Int J Immunogenet

October 2007

Laboratory of Immunogenetics, Tzu-Chi Stem Cells Centre, Buddhist Tzu-Chi Marrow Donor Registry, Buddhist Tzu-Chi Hospital, Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu-Chi Foundation, Hualien, Taiwan.

From 120 unrelated Taiwanese marrow stem cell donors with allelic homozygosities at human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-A, -B and -DRB1 loci, we determined 85 distinguishable haplotypes. Using the predetermined haplotype data, we deduced 418 haplotypes from 1903 unrelated individual stem cell donors selected for HLA confirmatory test. Eighteen of the 20 (90%) most frequently observed haplotypes determined in Asian Americans using computer prediction were found in this study.

Objective: Impaired autonomic function has been observed in patients with gastroesophageal reflex disease (GERD), but little is known about autonomic function in patients with non-erosive reflux disease (NERD). The objective of this study was to investigate potential differences in autonomic function by means of heart rate variability in GERD patients with and without erosive esophagitis.

Material And Methods: Thirty-five GERD patients and 20 healthy controls participated in the study.

Objective: Hypersensitivity to gastric distension has been reported in functional dyspepsia (FD). The aim of this study was to assess the perception to gastric distension and its relationship to specific symptoms using the water load test (WLT) in FD and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Material And Methods: A 5-min WLT was used to evaluate sensitivity of gastric distension in 47 FD and 61 GERD subjects, and 49 healthy controls (HC).
