Article Synopsis
  • RPE cells are crucial for eye health as they rely on mitochondria for energy needed for functions like phagocytosis and maintaining vision.
  • The study explored mitochondrial transplantation in RCS rats, which have a genetic predisposition to retinal degeneration, assessing the impacts through OCT and VEP techniques.
  • Results showed that transplanted mitochondria helped slow down retinal layer degeneration and preserved the normal electrical signaling from the retina, suggesting potential for future clinical applications.

This randomized controlled trial investigated the effectiveness of the nurse-led counseling intervention (NLCI) of postoperative home-based exercise training (HBET) on functional outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed head and neck cancer (NDHNC). Forty NDHNC patients were randomly and equally divided into the control and intervention groups. Both groups received routine care, and were instructed to undergo a HBET program with 40 min moderate-intensity exercise 3-4 times per day for 12 weeks after their surgery.

Older people are subject to an increased risk of falling compared to the young, especially during obstacle negotiation. This study aimed to quantify the effects of long-term Tai-Chi Chuan (TCC) practice on the balance control during obstacle-crossing in older people in terms of the inclination angles (IA) of the body's centre of mass (COM) relative to the centre of pressure (COP), and the rate of change of IA (RCIA). Fifteen healthy older adults who had practised TCC for at least 13 years and 15 healthy controls without any experience in TCC performed obstacle-crossing in a gait laboratory.

Article Synopsis
  • Effective COVID-19 containment measures, including physical distancing and hygiene practices, remain crucial despite the availability of vaccines, with varying compliance levels across Asian countries influenced by awareness and motivation in the early pandemic phase.
  • The study aimed to analyze how knowledge and attitudes correlate with compliance to these measures in 14 regions through electronic surveys from May to June 2020.
  • Results showed that Southeast Asian participants were more likely to commit to physical distancing, with independent factors for high compliance including safe distancing practices, mask-wearing, preferred news sources, and psychological well-being.

Importance: Knowledge and attitude influence compliance and individuals' practices. The risk and protective factors associated with high compliance to these preventive measures are critical to enhancing pandemic preparedness.

Objective: This survey aims to assess differences in mental health, knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of preventive measures for COVID-19 amongst healthcare professionals (HCP) and non-healthcare professionals.

Background And Aim: Gastrointestinal manifestations of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may mimic irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and social distancing measures may affect IBS patients negatively. We aimed to study the impact of COVID-19 on respondents with self-reported IBS.

Methods: We conducted an anonymized survey from May to June 2020 in 33 countries.

We aim to assess the feasibility of topography-guided laser in situ keratomileusis (TOPOLINK) for correcting pre-existing and surgical-induced astigmatism. A retrospective, single center cohort study was conducted. Patients with pre-existing irregular myopic astigmatism were recruited into the primary group and those with irregular myopic astigmatism following laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) were recruited into the enhancement group.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the combined effects of a short-peptide IF from potato-protein and moderate exercise on obesity-related issues in aging mice.
  • Results indicate that this combined approach helps reduce body weight, tissue damage, and protects against cardiac hypertrophy, promoting better heart and liver health.
  • The treatment also enhances key cellular pathways associated with longevity, suggesting it could be a promising strategy for combating obesity and its effects in aging populations.

Introduction: Directly Observed Treatment Short course (DOTS) is one of the most cost-effective approaches for TB treatment. However, TB incidence rates remain high in the mountain areas of Taiwan. A lay health advisor (LHA) strategy is integrated into DOTS as an Enhanced-DOTS (E-DOTS) to provide trustworthy, culturally-specific services in mountain areas that consider the characteristics of local ethnic groups.

Simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty (SBTKA) increases the rates of procedure-related complications and mortality compared with unilateral TKA. There are no well-defined guidelines for selecting patients to avoid mortality and proposing an upgrade treatment to decrease complication rates. This study aimed to evaluate whether optimal perioperative management could improve the safety of SBTKA.

Malignant tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) are among cancers with the poorest prognosis, indicated by their association with tumors of high-level morbidity and mortality. Gliomas, the most common primary CNS tumors that arise from neuroglial stem or progenitor cells, have estimated annual incidence of 6.6 per 100,000 individuals in the USA, and 3.

Spinal intramedullary tuberculoma following pulmonary tuberculosis: A case report and literature review.

Medicine (Baltimore)

December 2017

Department of Neurosurgery, Neuro-Medical Scientific Center, Buddhist Tzu Chi Hospital, Hualien, Taiwan.

Rationale: Spinal intramedullary tuberculoma (IMTB) is a rare disease that accounts for 1 to 2/100,000 patients with tuberculosis. We presented a case with pulmonary tuberculosis and concurrent IMTB at C3 to C5 level and reviewed the recent case series and discussed the diagnosis, treatment, and outcome.

Patient Concerns: A 33-year-old male had concurrent pulmonary TB and IMTB at the C3 to C5 level.

Purpose: The induction of autophagic cell death is an important process in the development of anticancer therapeutics. We aimed to evaluate the activity of the ancient Chinese decoction Danggui Buxue Tang (DBT) against colorectal cancer (CRC) and the associated autophagy-related mechanism.

Materials And Methods: CT26 CRC cells were implanted into syngeneic BALB/c mice for the tumor growth assay.

Background: Emergency complications of colon cancer include perforation and obstruction which were recognized as poor prognostic factors. Few studies have directly compared the outcomes of these two groups. In this study, we evaluated mortality and morbidity in patients with colon cancer initially presenting as perforation and obstruction.

Current evidence of proteinuria reduction as a surrogate target in advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) is incomplete due to lack of patient-pooled database. We retrospectively studied a multicenter cohort of 1891 patients who were enrolled in the nationwide multidisciplinary pre-end stage renal disease care program with a baseline glomerular filtration rate (GFR) <45 mL/min/1.73 m(2) and followed longitudinally to investigate the effect of the change in proteinuria on renal death (defined as composite of dialysis and death occurring before initiation of dialysis).

Background/purpose: After community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) was identified, new community-onset, healthcare-associated MRSA (HA-MRSA-CO) infections have been noticed as MRSA infection in patients with community-onset infection who have underlying conditions resulting in frequent exposure to the healthcare system. However, previous studies have not thoroughly investigated whether HA-MRSA-CO has characteristics resembling those of CA-MRSA or hospital-onset, healthcare-associated MRSA (HA-MRSA-HO) infection.

Methods: A multicenter, retrospective study was conducted to analyze the clinical and microbiological data of patients with clinical isolates of MRSA from nine hospitals in Taiwan.

Current guidelines recommend a goal of door-to-balloon (D2B) time < 90 min for patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). We aim to prospectively determine the effect of data feedback on D2B time and its seven individual components in primary PCI. From December 7, 2007, to June 2, 2009, 116 consecutive patients with STEMI who received PCI within 12 h of symptom onset were enrolled, including 56 patients before and 60 patients after the implementation of data feedback on July 28, 2008.
