Amidst the current biodiversity crisis, the availability of genomic resources for declining species can provide important insights into the factors driving population decline. In the early 1990s, the black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla), a pelagic gull widely distributed across the arctic, subarctic, and temperate zones, suffered a steep population decline following an abrupt warming of sea surface temperature across its distribution range and is currently listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Kittiwakes have long been the focus for field studies of physiology, ecology, and ecotoxicology and are primary indicators of fluctuating ecological conditions in arctic and subarctic marine ecosystems.

Spermatogenesis leads to the formation of functional sperm cells. Here we have applied high-pressure freezing in combination with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to study the ultrastructure of sperm development in subadult males of the praying mantid Hierodula membranacea, a species in which spermatogenesis had not previously been studied. We show the ultrastructure of different stages of sperm development in this species.

Secondary lymphedema is a debilitating condition driven by impaired regeneration of lymphatic vasculature following lymphatic injury, surgical removal of lymph nodes in cancer patients or infection. However, the extent to which collecting lymphatic vessels regenerate following injury remains unclear. Here, we employed a novel mouse model of lymphatic injury in combination with state-of-the-art lymphatic imaging to demonstrate that the implantation of an optimized fibrin gel following lymphatic vessel injury leads to the growth and reconnection of the injured lymphatic vessel network, resulting in the restoration of lymph flow to the draining node.

Recently, several mainstream media organizations have moved away from using "illegal immigrant" in their immigration coverage. While this shift in immigration coverage is positive, seemingly positive language may still be exclusionary, particularly if the content of stories remains the same. We investigate whether newspaper articles that describe immigrants as "illegal" are more negative in content than articles that present immigrants as "undocumented" by analyzing 1,616 newspaper articles and letters to the editor in between 2000 and 2016, a critical period of immigration legislative activity in Arizona.

Radiation belts are present in all large-scale Solar System planetary magnetospheres: Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. These persistent equatorial zones of relativistic particles up to tens of megaelectron volts in energy can extend further than ten times the planet's radius, emit gradually varying radio emissions and affect the surface chemistry of close-in moons. Recent observations demonstrate that very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, collectively known as ultracool dwarfs, can produce planet-like radio emissions such as periodically bursting aurorae from large-scale magnetospheric currents.

Chronic social isolation can lead to dysregulation of many physiological and psychological processes, including the ability to respond to acute stressors. Previous work in our lab reported that six weeks of social isolation in prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) caused increased glucocorticoid levels, oxidative damage, telomere degradation and anhedonia, and that oxytocin treatment prevented all of these changes. Following these results, we investigated how chronic social isolation with and without oxytocin treatment affected glucocorticoid (CORT) and oxidative stress responses to an acute stressor, a 5-min resident-intruder (R-I) test at the end of the social isolation period.
