Although laparoscopy has some limitations related to tumor size or location along the colon, it has been demonstrated that the oncological results are just as good as for open surgery. One can also add to the benefits faster recovery and start of chemotherapy, with lower rates of complications. Our study aimed to compare open surgery to laparoscopy for non-complicated colon tumors operated in an average case-load center and appreciate its feasibility with regards to the T stage, lymph node yield and conversions.

Bile duct carcinomas have a different prognosis and genetic profile depending on their location; intrahepatic/extrahepatic or at the level of the gallbladder. Although in recent years there have been important advances in first-line therapy, second-line therapy in cholangiocarcinoma does not currently have a standard. Therefore at this level, there is an acute need for personalized treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • Injuries significantly impact global health, with the number of injury deaths rising from approximately 4.26 million in 1990 to about 4.48 million in 2017, despite a decline in age-standardized mortality rates.
  • The Global Burden of Disease study measured both fatal and non-fatal injuries through years of life lost (YLLs) and years lived with disability (YLDs), which were combined into disability-adjusted life years (DALYs).
  • While overall injury incidence increased, age-standardized DALYs decreased, indicating a need for ongoing research focused on injury prevention, better data collection, and improving access to medical care in high-burden areas.

Background: As global rates of mortality decrease, rates of non-fatal injury have increased, particularly in low Socio-demographic Index (SDI) nations. We hypothesised this global pattern of non-fatal injury would be demonstrated in regard to bony hand and wrist trauma over the 27-year study period.

Methods: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 was used to estimate prevalence, age-standardised incidence and years lived with disability for hand trauma in 195 countries from 1990 to 2017.

Sex- and Method-Specific Reference Values for Right Ventricular Strain by 2-Dimensional Speckle-Tracking Echocardiography.

Circ Cardiovasc Imaging

February 2016

From the Department of Cardiac, Thoracic, and Vascular Sciences, University of Padua, Padua, Italy (D.M., D.P., N.S., U.C., P.A., G.R., G.C., S.I., L.P.B.); and Cardiology Department, Bucharest Emergency Hospital, Bucharest, Romania (S.O.).

Background: Despite the fact that assessment of right ventricular longitudinal strain (RVLS) carries important implications for patient diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment, its implementation in clinical settings has been hampered by the limited reference values and the lack of uniformity in software, method, and definition used for measuring RVLS. Accordingly, this study was designed to establish (1) the reference values for RVLS by 2-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography; and (2) their relationship with demographic, hemodynamic, and cardiac factors.

Methods And Results: In 276 healthy volunteers (55% women; age, 18-76 years), free wall and septum RVLS (6 segments) and free wall RVLS (3 segments) using both 6- and 3-segment regions of interest were obtained.

Rationale: perineural invasion is an under-recognized way of metastatic spread via tumoral invasion of the nerves. It is encountered in malignancies located in the head and neck but also in cancers involving the pancreas, colon and rectum, prostate, biliary tract and stomach. For some tumors, it may be the only way of metastatic spread.

Injuries by high voltage electrocution represent rare and very complex accidents. In order to provide support to surgical therapy, to limit the extension of injuries or to support the natural process of tissue repair, we oriented towards the use of two growth factors, insulin and platelet-enriched plasma (PRP) administered locally, on the injury site. The therapeutic protocol was applied on three cases of electrocution with promising results in reducing the duration of surgical and pharmacological treatment and of time of hospitalization.

Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) can be reliably determined in vivo by carotidian ultrasound and is an accessible and reliable method to assess subclinical atherosclerosis. Available epidemiological data showed that CIMT is significantly correlated with future cardiovascular events. However it has limited value to help risk stratification on top of standard risk-derived functions such as Framingham risk score.
