Brucella is an intracellular parasitic pathogen that causes the worldwide zoonotic disease brucellosis. The type IV secretion system (T4SS) is utilized to secrete various effectors to help Brucella form Brucella-containing vacuoles within the cell and accomplish intracellular trafficking and replication. Brucella has fewer recognized effector proteins than other intracellular parasites in the Proteobacteria, indicating that Brucella may contain a large number of unidentified effector proteins.

Prevalence and herd-level risk factors associated with Brucella infection in smallholders keeping large ruminants.

Res Vet Sci

December 2024

Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health, Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, City University of Hong Kong, Kowloon, Hong Kong SAR, China; UKMC, Manchester M11 1AA, UK. Electronic address:

Brucellosis is a disease that poses a higher risk of transmission to animals and people who have close interactions with them, such as farmers. Therefore, the present study was designed to determine the seroprevalence of bovine brucellosis and associated risk factors in Kasur, Punjab, Pakistan. One hundred pooled milk samples from 100 smallholder mixed herds of cows and buffaloes with a total study population of 425 animals (277 cattle and 148 buffalos) with a range of up to seven animals in each herd were collected and tested through a milk ring test (MRT).

Background: Brucellosis is a neglected zoonotic disease often contracted through contact with animals and consumption of unpasteurized dairy products. Despite being the most common cause of non-malarial acute febrile illness brucellosis is often misdiagnosed in healthcare setups. The global incidence of Brucella infection is reported to be over 2 million cases annually.

Brucellosis, a prevalent zoonotic disease caused by bacteria from the genus , presents a substantial public health and economic challenges worldwide. In this paper, we formulate a two-patch deterministic model to investigate the impact of short-term displacement of domestic animals on the transmission dynamics of brucellosis within and between patches with heterogeneous risk of infection. The model analysis is performed, and the basic reproduction number is computed and used in the stability analysis of equilibria.

Brucellosis is an infectious zoonotic disease. The disease is one of the major concerns in developing societies due to its great importance for public health and economic losses in the animal industry. The principal target of the study was to detect the prevalence of brucellosis and associated risk factors in cattle from Hamedan (western Iran) using different laboratory techniques.

Background: High titers of specific antibodies to cyclic citrulline peptide (ACCP) are often present in the serum of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and, together with rheumatoid factor (RF), are a diagnostic marker of RA. Brucellosis is a zoonotic infection in which osteoarticular involvement occurs in 10-85% of patients. RF in brucellosis patients is significantly higher than in healthy people.

Background: Vertebral osteomyelitis (VO) is an infection of the spine with increasing prevalence due to improved diagnostics and aging populations. Multiple pathogens, including , spp., and pyogenic bacteria, can cause VO, making differential diagnosis complex, especially in regions with endemic brucellosis and tuberculosis.

Takayasu arteritis masquerading as brucellosis: a case report.

Oxf Med Case Reports

December 2024

Scientific Affairs Department, Smart Health Tower, Madam Mitterrand Street, Sulaymaniyah 46001, Kurdistan, Iraq.

This study reports a unique case of a 19-year-old male with Takayasu arteritis initially misdiagnosed as brucellosis due to persistently positive brucella serology. Despite multiple anti-brucellosis treatments, symptoms persisted until the correct diagnosis of Takayasu arteritis was made, Subsequent immunosuppressive therapy for Takayasu arteritis led to symptom improvement and normalization of serological markers. This highlights the challenge of distinguishing between these conditions and the potential for immunosuppression to impact brucella serology in such cases.

Brucellosis with neurological symptoms at onset is rare in children and is frequently misdiagnosed or overlooked due to nonspecific clinical presentations, particularly in non-endemic areas. We report a case of neurobrucellosis in a child from a non-pastoral area, diagnosed via metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS). The patient presented with headache and altered consciousness, accompanied by fever, projectile vomiting, seizures, and urinary incontinence.
