The human genome project ushered in a genomic medicine era that was largely unimaginable three decades ago. Discoveries of druggable cancer drivers enabled biomarker-driven gene- and immune-targeted therapy and transformed cancer treatment. Minimizing treatment not expected to benefit, and toxicity-including financial and time-are important goals of modern oncology.

Introduction: Since 2020, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) have collaborated to link the AAOS Orthopaedic In-Training Examination (OITE) and the ABOS part I Certification Examination, allowing the identification of a minimum score on each annual OITE that corresponds to a minimum passing part I score. The purpose of this study is to assess the performance of this examination linking over these past 3 years.
Methods: From 2020 to 2022, the AAOS provided each graduating resident's OITE score; from 2021 to 2023, the ABOS provided each examinee's ABOS part I pass-fail result.

Purpose: Trocar site hernias impact 1-10% of patients undergoing a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, typically at the 10 mm port site. Risk factors identified for trocar site hernias include obesity and age; however, little is known about the impact of pre-existing diastasis rectus abdominus (DRA) on trocar site hernia rates. Therefore, we aimed to determine the impact of pre-operative DRA on trocar site hernia rates after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Background: There are several barriers to fulfillment of desired postpartum permanent contraception (PC). Prior research has primarily focused on the federal Medicaid sterilization policy as a barrier to PC; however, other barriers need to be examined.
Objectives: To explore the levels and intersections of barriers to postpartum PC that exist external to the Medicaid policy.

Background: N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) measurement has class 1, level of evidence A recommendations in heart failure (HF) guidelines for diagnosis and prognosis. Analytical characterization of a novel automated NT-proBNP assay is necessary to examine its fitness for validation in pivotal clinical trials.
Methods: The Access NT-proBNP assay is an immunoenzymatic assay using monoclonal capture and detection reagents on the DxI 9000 Immunoassay Analyzer.

Objective: To investigate if a telehealth option as the initial postpartum visit would increase postpartum visit attendance.
Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of women receiving prenatal care through a federally qualified health center, Westside Family Health in Delaware, comparing attendance at a postpartum visit before telehealth was an option (2018) versus after the onset of the pandemic (2021). Representative random samples were taken from one year of deliveries pre- and post-implementation of the telehealth visit option.

Background: Rare and nutritionally complex diseases, like chronic intestinal failure (CIF), are not encountered regularly by clinicians. Specialized centers with experience in intestinal failure are relatively sparse, leading many patients to rely on local clinicians. Previously published reports demonstrated lack of knowledge in intestinal failure among gastroenterologists in the United States, in Europe, and in the United Kingdom.

Over 850,000 surgeries are performed to treat meniscal injuries each year in the United States. Even with repair, patients are likely to develop osteoarthritis (OA) within the next two decades. There is a pressing clinical need to improve meniscal repair procedures to restore tissue function and prevent joint degeneration later in life.

Anterior-posterior interactions in the alpha band (8-12 Hz) have been implicated in a variety of functions including perception, attention, and working memory. The underlying neural communication can be flexibly controlled by adjusting phase relations when activities across anterior-posterior regions oscillate at a matched frequency. We thus investigated how alpha oscillation frequencies spontaneously converged along anterior-posterior regions by tracking oscillatory EEG activity while participants rested.

Advances in electronics and materials science have led to the development of sophisticated components for clinical and research neurotechnology systems. However, instrumentation to easily evaluate how these components function in a complete system does not yet exist. In this work, we set out to design and validate a software-defined mixed-signal routing fabric, 'xDev', that enables neurotechnology system designers to rapidly iterate, evaluate, and deploy advanced multi-component systems.

Purpose: Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) are delivered by transducer arrays applied to scalp or body surface for treatment of multiple malignancies. Dermatologic complications are thought to be related to hydrogel situated between the electrodes and scalp or skin to facilitate electric field penetration. High intensity of TTFields on these surfaces may also be a contributing factor.

Rationale: Stable oxygen isotope measurements in silicate clays, such as smectite and kaolinite, provide crucial information for understanding Earth's climate history and environmental changes. Despite a growing interest in the oxygen isotope analysis of silicate clays and clay-rich sediments, there lacks a consensus on the preparation and standardization of clay mineral samples. To improve the accuracy and interlaboratory comparisons of clay isotope measurements, especially those involving laser fluorination techniques, newly established kaolinite and smectite oxygen isotope standards are much needed.

Background: Aging of the population has resulted in more patients living with atrial fibrillation (AF) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AF is associated with macro- and micro-thromboembolism, microvascular dysfunction, and system inflammation. Organ systems sensitive to the long-term systemic and vascular disease associations of AF will likely develop dysfunction over time.

Youth problem sexual behaviors (PSBs), and particularly youth illegal sexual behaviors, have deleterious consequences for youth who engage in them, including removal from the home, perpetration of non-sexual offenses, and chronic involvement with the child welfare and juvenile legal systems (Lussier, Juvenile sex offending through a developmental life course criminology perspective: An agenda for policy and research). Further, individuals who are victims of youth PSBs also experience poor mental and physical health outcomes, resulting in a significant public health expenditure (Hailes et al., Long-term outcomes of childhood sexual abuse: An umbrella review).
