Acute agitation in youth is a challenging presentation to the emergency department. In many cases, however, youth can be behaviorally de-escalated using a combination of environmental modification and verbal de-escalation. In cases where additional strategies such as pharmacologic de-escalation or physical restraint are needed, using the least restrictive means possible, including the youth in the decision-making process, and providing options are important.

Background The association between psychosocial factors and atrial fibrillation (AF) is poorly understood. Methods and Results Postmenopausal women from the Women's Health Initiative were retrospectively analyzed to identify incident AF in relation to a panel of validated psychosocial exposure variables, as assessed by multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression and hierarchical cluster analysis. Among the 83 736 women included, the average age was 63.

Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F. (TwHF) is a traditional Chinese herb and has a broad spectrum of biological functions including immunosuppression and anti-inflammatory effects. When used in combination with other standard of care medications, such as glucocorticoids and calcineurin inhibitors like cyclosporine A, for treating glomerular diseases, TwHF demonstrates a remarkable dose-sparing effect, the molecular mechanism for which remains largely unknown.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFG-protein-coupled receptor 30 (GPR30/GPER) belongs to the seven transmembrane receptor (7TMR) superfamily, the most common class of surface receptor with approximately 800 known members. GPER promotes estrogen binding and rapid signaling via membrane-associated enzymes resulting in increased cAMP and release of heparan bound epidermal growth factor (proHB-EGF) from breast cancer cells. However, GPER is predominately localized intracellularly in breast cancer cells with minor amounts of receptor on the cell surface, an observation that has caused some controversy regarding its potential role as a plasma membrane estrogen receptor.

Removal of the eye may be necessary after severe ocular trauma, to control pain in a blind eye, to treat some intraocular malignancies, in endophthalmitis unresponsive to medical therapy, and for cosmetic improvement of a disfigured eye. The choice of procedure to accomplish this is best made by an informed patient. Enucleation and evisceration can each achieve the desired goals, but several factors must be considered in choosing the most appropriate procedure.

Recent information from several laboratories suggest that power frequency fields may stimulate cell differentiation in a number of model systems. In this way, they may be similar to pulsed electromagnetic fields, which have been used therapeutically. However, the effects of power frequency fields on phenotypic or genotypic expression have not been explained.
