An azygos lobe is a rare pulmonary variation that typically presents in the superior lobe of the right lung. Most literature on azygos lobe cases consists of radiologic X-ray or computed tomography findings, with only a few reports based on cadaveric dissections. Here, we report a cadaveric dissection of a right azygos lobe identified in a 77-year-old female anatomical body donor.

Microplastic exposure induces HSP90α secretion and aggravates asthmatic airway remodeling via PI3K-Akt-mTOR pathway.

Ecotoxicol Environ Saf

February 2025

Chronic Airways Diseases Laboratory, Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China. Electronic address:

Microplastics pollution has raised a considerable awareness due to their extensive distribution in the environment. It has potential side effects on human health. Microplastics can enter the human respiratory system, then deposit in the lung, destroying the structure of the bronchus and alveoli, and causing pulmonary inflammation, mucus production, and airway hyperresponsiveness, leading to the aggravation of asthma.

Sleeve basal segmentectomy with pulmonary artery division for lung cancer: how to do it.

Surg Today

February 2025

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University Hospital, 54 Kawahara-Cho, Shogoin, Sakyo-Ku, Kyoto, 606-8507, Japan.

Sleeve segmentectomy was originally developed to preserve the lung volume in patients who were unable to tolerate lobectomy. We herein report an immunocompromised patient with potentially curable peripheral squamous cell carcinoma in whom sleeve basal segmentectomy was performed for a 1.8-cm tumor with endobronchial growth that occluded B7 and invaded the inlet of the middle lobar bronchus and B6.

Interdiscip Cardiovasc Thorac Surg

February 2025

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital, School of Medicine, Tongji University, Shanghai, China.

Objectives: To compare the oncological outcomes of segmentectomy for non-peripheral versus peripheral small-sized non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Methods: This retrospective observational study included patients with clinical stage IA1-A2 NSCLC who underwent segmentectomy. Patients were separated based on tumour distance index (DI, which was calculated as the ratio of the distance from the entrance of the segmental bronchus to the proximal tumour margin to the distance to the lobar pleura along the same line): non-peripheral group (DI ≤ 2/3) and peripheral group (DI > 2/3).

Recurrent bacterial pneumonia in Irish Wolfhounds - histopathology and characterization of bronchial cartilage changes.

J Comp Pathol

February 2025

Department of Veterinary Biosciences, Pathology and Parasitology Unit, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland.

An increased incidence of bacterial pneumonia (BP) has been reported in Irish Wolfhounds (IWHs) and the disease typically recurs repeatedly. The aetiology is unclear but the development of bronchiectasis in the absence of clinical findings indicative of interstitial lung disease is common in affected IWHs. This observation led us to hypothesize that the primary cause could be at bronchial level.
