Background: Squamous cell carcinoma of the prostate (SCCP) is a neoplasm that comprises fewer than 1% of all primary prostate cancer diagnoses. Given its rarity, there is a paucity of data regarding the treatment of this disease. The limited literature points to the potential of local therapy in conjunction with chemotherapy to improve patient mortality.

Current society guidelines recommend purse-string closure technique for stoma reversal, which has been shown to reduce but not eliminate the risk of deep surgical site infection (SSI) at the original stoma site, a complication associated with increased morbidity and cost. We studied an adjunctive technique to further reduce the risk of SSI. A retrospective chart review was conducted on adult patients who underwent stoma reversal between May 2016 - July 2022.

Introduction: Case reports are perceived as having diminished value relative to other study designs. It has been said that medical toxicology (MT) is based largely upon case report literature and thought to be unique in this regard. We sought to quantify recent MT publication of case reports compared with top periodicals from emergency medicine (EM) and internal medicine (IM) journals.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends all children receive care in a patient-centered medical home. With weight stigma potentially hampering family-centered communication in the care of children with overweight or obesity, we aimed to determine how children's weight status was associated with access to a medical home and its components. We analyzed 2016-2021 data on children age 10-17 years in the National Survey of Children's Health.

Background: In the United States, gaps in health care insurance coverage correlate with lower use of preventive care. We aimed to determine whether part-year or year-round uninsurance was associated with lower use of testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Methods: We identified women aged 19 to 49 years in the 2017-2019 National Survey of Family Growth.

Phenotypic transformation of vascular smooth muscle (VSM) from a contractile state to a synthetic, proliferative state is a hallmark of cardiovascular disease (CVD). In CVD, diseased tissue often becomes acidic from altered cellular metabolism secondary to compromised blood flow, yet the contribution of local acid/base imbalance to the disease process has been historically overlooked. In this study, we examined the regulatory impact of the pH-sensing G protein-coupled receptor GPR68 on vascular smooth muscle (VSM) proliferation in vivo and in vitro in wild-type (WT) and GPR68 knockout (KO) male and female mice.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common types of cancer. More focus is being placed on clinical presentations of distant metastasis from HCC. While there has been a decline in the use of digoxin in patients with heart failure and atrial fibrillation, acute and chronic digoxin toxicity remains a significant clinical problem. Digoxin's narrow therapeutic window and nonspecific signs and symptoms of toxicity create clinical challenges and uncertainty around the diagnostic criteria of toxicity and responsive treatment choices for the bedside clinician. A systematic review of published literature on digoxin toxicity (34,587 publications over 6 decades, with 114 meeting inclusion criteria) was performed to develop 33 consensus statements on diagnostic and therapeutic approaches which were then evaluated through a modified Delphi process involving a panel of experts in cardiology, nursing, emergency medicine, and medical toxicology.

Introduction Radiation therapy (RT) is the gold standard for many pelvic cancers and improves overall patient survival. However, pelvic RT is associated with increased sexual dysfunction and urinary incontinence. Although the side effects of pelvic RT are well-documented, the pathological mechanisms leading to pelvic organ dysfunction are unknown, and a preclinical model has not been established.

Background: Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) imposes significant healthcare costs and strains emergency services. This study aimed to identify factors associated with unplanned healthcare usage among children with IBD in a rural, medically underserved region in the southeastern United States.
Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed children (<18 years) with moderate or severe IBD followed at an academic pediatric gastroenterology clinic between 2016 and 2021.
