Although hydrothermal treatments for biomass fractionation have been vastly studied, their effect on the depolymerization of isolated lignins in terms of yield, composition, and compatibility of the produced lignin bio-oils with bioconversion is still poorly investigated. In this study, we evaluated the hydrothermal depolymerization of an β-O-4'-rich lignin extracted from sugarcane bagasse by alkaline fractionation, investigating the influence of temperature (200-350 °C), time (30-90 min), and solid-liquid ratio (1:10-1:50 m.v) on yield of bio-oils (up to 31 wt%) rich in monomers (light bio-oils).

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) is offered to patients with operable or inoperable breast cancer (BC) to downstage the disease. Clinical responses to NACT may vary depending on a few known clinical and biological features, but the diversity of responses to NACT is not fully understood. In this study, 80 women had their metabolite profiles of pre-treatment sera analyzed for potential NACT response biomarker candidates in combination with immunohistochemical parameters using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR).

We investigated the valley Zeeman splitting of excitonic peaks in the microphotoluminescence (μPL) spectra of high-quality hBN/WS/MoSe/hBN heterostructures under perpendicular magnetic fields up to 20 T. We identify two neutral exciton peaks in the μPL spectra; the lower-energy peak exhibits a reduced -factor relative to that of the higher energy peak and much lower than the recently reported values for interlayer excitons in other van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures. We provide evidence that such a discernible -factor stems from the spatial confinement of the exciton in the potential landscape created by the moiré pattern due to lattice mismatch or interlayer twist in heterobilayers.

Visceral adiposity is a risk factor for severe COVID-19, and a link between adipose tissue infection and disease progression has been proposed. Here we demonstrate that SARS-CoV-2 infects human adipose tissue and undergoes productive infection in fat cells. However, susceptibility to infection and the cellular response depends on the anatomical origin of the cells and the viral lineage.

L-asparaginase (ASNase) is an important biological drug used to treat Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). It catalyzes the hydrolysis of L-asparagine (Asn) in the bloodstream and, since ALL cells cannot synthesize Asn, protein synthesis is impaired leading to apoptosis. Despite its therapeutic importance, ASNase treatment is associated to side effects, mainly hypersensitivity and immunogenicity.

The development of flexible and conformable devices, whose performance can be maintained while being continuously deformed, provides a significant step toward the realization of next-generation wearable and e-textile applications. Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) are particularly interesting for flexible and lightweight products, because of their low-temperature solution processability, and the mechanical flexibility of organic materials that endows OFETs the natural compatibility with plastic and biodegradable substrates. Here, an in-depth review of two competing flexible OFET technologies, planar and vertical OFETs (POFETs and VOFETs, respectively) is provided.

Due to its severe burden and geographic distribution, Chagas disease (CD) has a significant social and economic impact on low-income countries. Benznidazole and nifurtimox are currently the only drugs available for CD. These are prodrugs activated by reducing the nitro group, a reaction catalyzed by nitroreductase type I enzyme from Trypanosoma cruzi (TcNTR), with no homolog in the human host.

Staphylococcal exfoliative toxins (ETs) are glutamyl endopeptidases that specifically cleave the Glu381-Gly382 bond in the ectodomains of desmoglein 1 (Dsg1) via complex action mechanisms. To date, four ETs have been identified in different strains and ETE is the most recently characterized. The unusual properties of ETs have been attributed to a unique structural feature, i.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder characterised by progressive degeneration of the dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra leading to severe motor complications. The etiology of the disease is unknown with its sporadic form accounting for 90% of cases. To date, over 20 genes have been identified as the cause of the inherited form of PD, many of them linked to the protein alpha-synuclein and mitochondrial function.

In this work, the toxicity and biodistribution of graphene oxide (GO) and oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were investigated in Caenorhabditis elegans. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was selected as a model protein to evaluate the influence of protein corona formation on materials physicochemical properties, colloidal stability, and toxicity. Biological assays were performed to assess the effects of bare and albumin corona coated materials on survival, oxidative stress, intestinal barrier permeability, growth, reproduction, and fertility.

Treating schizophrenia is a challenge currently handled with the use of antipsychotic drugs. Despite being the most applied treatment strategy, current antipsychotics present severe limitations and side effects which impact patients' health and quality of life. For instance, although these drugs target mainly the dopamine system, they present target promiscuity and work by distinct mechanisms of action.

The high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) technique was applied to deposit multilayer-like (Cr, Y)N coatings on AISI 304L stainless steel, using pendular substrate oscillation and a Cr-Y target and varying the nitrogen flow rate from 10 to 50 sccm. The microstructure, mechanical and tribological properties were investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, instrumented nano-hardness, and wear tests. The columnar grain structure became highly segmented and nanosized due to pendular substrate oscillation and the addition of yttrium.

Breast cancer (BC) is a heterogeneous disease, and establishing biomarkers is essential to patient management. We previously described that extracellular vesicle-derived miRNAs (EV-miRNAs) miR-142-5p, miR-150-5p, miR-320a, and miR-4433b-5p in serum discriminated BC from control samples, either alone or combined in a panel. Using these previously described markers, we intend to evaluate whether the same markers identified in EVs are also potential biomarkers in tissue and serum.

Ultraviolet (UV) light can inactivate SARS-CoV-2. However, the practicality of UV light is limited by the carcinogenic potential of mercury vapor-based UV lamps. Recent advances in the development of krypton chlorine (KrCl) excimer lamps hold promise, as these emit a shorter peak wavelength (222 nm), which is highly absorbed by the skin's stratum corneum and can filter out higher wavelengths.

Polyhydrides are a novel class of superconducting materials with extremely high critical parameters, which is very promising for sensor applications. On the other hand, a complete experimental study of the best so far known superconductor, lanthanum superhydride LaH , encounters a serious complication because of the large upper critical magnetic field H (0), exceeding 120-160 T. It is found that partial replacement of La atoms by magnetic Nd atoms results in significant suppression of superconductivity in LaH : each at% of Nd causes a decrease in T by 10-11 K, helping to control the critical parameters of this compound.

Toxicity evaluations involve the analysis of multiple biomarkers. In this study, the liver, target organ analyzed by treatments with iron concentrations, indicated the accumulation of lipids as a response. Considering that the distribution of lipids in an organ is directly related to the induction of inflammatory processes by aquatic contaminants, this study proposes to carry out an integrative investigation of the behavior and the distribution of lipids in the liver tissue.
