Rare earth(III) β-diketonates are highly remarkable luminophores in the visible spectral region among the rare earth compounds, owing to the efficient contribution from the 4f-4f intraconfigurational transitions. To get detailed structural insight into the RE sites (RE = Eu, Gd, and Sm), X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) can be very potent in probing the local chemical environment around the RE ion. Citrus cancer, caused by strains of Xanthomonas citri (Xc) and Xanthomonas aurantifolii (Xa), is one of the most economically important citrus diseases. Although our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying citrus canker development has advanced remarkably in recent years, exactly how citrus plants fight against these pathogens remains largely unclear. Using a Xa pathotype C strain that infects Mexican lime only and sweet oranges as a pathosystem to study the immune response triggered by this bacterium in these hosts, we herein report that the Xa flagellin C protein (XaFliC) acts as a potent defence elicitor in sweet oranges.

Beetle luciferases were classified into three functional groups: (1) pH-sensitive yellow-green-emitting (fireflies) which change the bioluminescence color to red at acidic pH, high temperatures and presence of heavy metals; (2) the pH-insensitive green-yellow-emitting (click beetles, railroad worms and firefly isozymes) which are not affected by these factors, and (3) pH-insensitive red-emitting. Although the pH-sensing site in firefly luciferases was recently identified, it is unclear why some luciferases are pH-insensitive despite the presence of some conserved pH-sensing residues. Through circular dichroism, we compared the secondary structural changes and unfolding temperature of luciferases of representatives of these three groups: (1) pH-sensitive green-yellow-emitting Macrolampis sp2 (Mac) and Amydetes vivianii (Amy) firefly luciferases; (2) the pH-insensitive green-emitting Pyrearinus termitilluminans larval click beetle (Pte) and Aspisoma lineatum (Al2) larval firefly luciferases, and (3) the pH-insensitive red-emitting Phrixotrix hirtus railroadworm (PxRE) luciferase.

It is advantageous to understand the relationship between cellulose fiber morphology and the rheological behavior of its dispersions so that their application can be optimized. The goal of this study was to produce sugarcane bagasse-sourced cellulose dispersions with different numbers of high-pressure homogenization cycles. Microfluidization produced cellulose nanofibers (between 5 and 80 nm in diameter) with similar surface charge densities and crystallinities (measured on the resulting films).

Obesity is one of the main risk factors for type 2 diabetes, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) is considered a promising pathway on insulin sensitivity and adipose tissue metabolism. The search for molecules acting as insulin sensitizers have increased, especially for molecules that block PPARγ-Ser273 phosphorylation, without reaching full agonism. We evaluated the effects of AM-879, a PPARγ non-agonist, and found that AM-879 exerts different effects in mice depending on the dose.

Introduction: Methotrexate (MTX), a folic acid antagonist and nucleotide synthesis inhibitor, is a cornerstone drug used against acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), but its mechanism of action and resistance continues to be unraveled even after decades of clinical use.

Methods: To better understand the mechanisms of this drug, we accessed the intracellular metabolic content of 13 ALL cell lines treated with MTX by 1H-NMR, and correlated metabolome data with cell proliferation and gene expression. Further, we validated these findings by inhibiting the cellular antioxidant system of the cells in vitro and in vivo in the presence of MTX.

Nanoscale structural and electronic properties of cellulose/graphene interfaces.

The development of electronic devices based on the functionalization of (nano)cellulose platforms relies upon an atomistic understanding of the structural and electronic properties of a combined system, cellulose/functional element. In this work, we present a theoretical study of the nanocellulose/graphene interfaces (nCL/G) based on first-principles calculations. We find that the binding energies of both hydrophobic/G (nCL/G) and hydrophilic/G (nCL/G) interfaces are primarily dictated by the van der Waals interactions, and are comparable with those of their 2D interface counterparts.
