The use of adjunct chemical substances in the early postoperative period of periodontal surgical procedures is recommended due to the potential risk of trauma in the operated area. Chlorhexidine digluconate mouthwash is widely used but can cause adverse effects. Phthalocyanine derivatives are being studied as an alternative, demonstrating good antimicrobial activity, especially in the self-activated form, which does not require additional light or chemicals.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disease with an overall incidence of between 1 in 5,000 newborn males. Carriers may manifest progressive muscle weakness, resulting from the progressive degeneration of skeletal muscles, generating cardiac and respiratory disorders. Considering the lack of effective treatments, different therapeutic approaches have been developed, such as protein synthesis and extracellular matrix derivatives that can be used to improve muscle regeneration, maintenance, or repair.

Chiral Oxazoline-Triazole-Benzothiazole Molecular Triads: Photoactive Sensors for Enantioselective Carbohydrate Recognition in Solution.

JACS Au

January 2025

Instituto de Química, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul-UFRGS, Av. Bento Gonçalves 9500, 91501-970 Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Understanding the mechanism of drug action in biological systems is facilitated by the interactions between small molecules and target chiral biomolecules. In this context, focusing on the enantiomeric recognition of carbohydrates in solution through steady-state fluorescence emission spectroscopy is noteworthy. To this end, we have developed a third generation of chiral optical sensors for carbohydrates, distinct from all of those previously presented, which interact with carbohydrates to form non-covalent probe-analyte interactions.

Cartilage repair remains a significant challenge due to the tissue's limited innate regenerative capacity. Despite advances in techniques such as microfracture, autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI), and osteochondral grafting, long-term outcomes are often compromised by complications, including suboptimal tissue integration, graft resorption, and mechanical instability. Recently, biologically augmented scaffold-based cartilage repair has emerged as a promising approach for full-thickness osteochondral lesions.

Introduction: Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) colonization in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) is a significant global health concern, leading to severe infections, extended hospital stays, and substantial economic burdens on health-care systems. To develop effective infection control strategies, we need to fill existing gaps in our understanding of MRSA epidemiology in neonates. The aim of this systematic review is to provide an extensive analysis of the proportion of MRSA colonizations in NICUs.

Introduction: The tools to distinguish relapse from reinfection are needed in malaria-endemic areas. We evaluated seroprevalence against sets of specific peptides to the block 2 region of -merozoite surface protein-1 (PvMSP1) to detect parasite clones.

Methods: We applied amplicon deep sequencing (ADS) of block 2 region of the MSP-1 gene () to determine cocirculating parasite clones within eight -infected individuals.

Feminist debates on how the state incorporates and reshapes feminist categories of violence reveal unintended consequences, such as the depoliticization of these ideas. Through a case study of the Feminicídio Law in Brazil, I examine feminist writings on , following its state incorporation as a criminal category, to address the killing of women based on gendered reasons. Drawing on materialist feminist discourse analysis, I challenge the notion that institutionalization necessarily leads to depoliticization.

Over the past 30 years, obesity prevalence has markedly increased globally, including among children. Although genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified over 1,000 genetic loci associated with obesity-related traits in adults, the genetic architecture of childhood obesity is less well-characterized. Moreover, most childhood obesity GWAS have been restricted to severely obese children, in relatively small sample sizes, and in primarily European ancestry populations.
