Introduction: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) affects a significant proportion of aging males, often requiring surgical intervention when conservative treatments fail.

Case Description: This case report details the management of a 58-year-old male with severe lower urinary tract symptoms and a markedly enlarged prostate, presenting with bladder stones and persistent obstruction despite medication. The patient underwent an open simple prostatectomy but developed bladder neck contracture and recurrent urinary retention, necessitating a suprapubic cystostomy.

Root canal retreatment (Re-RCT) cases have shortcomings due to the ineffective removal of the root canal filling material, eventually leading to endodontic failure. This study aims to test the comparative efficacy of retreatment files in removing calcium silicate-based sealer and epoxy resin-based sealer. Thirty-two single-rooted teeth were decoronated at 15 mm and bio-mechanical preparation was performed.

December 2024

Departamento de Fitopatologia, Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Viçosa, MG, 36570-900, Brazil.

During surveys in the centres of origin of the coffee leaf rust (CLR), in Africa, as well as in its exotic range in Brazil, 23 isolates of the genus were obtained from uredinial pustules. Using a phylogenetic analysis of all isolates involving a combination of partial sequences of the internal transcribed spacer region of rDNA (ITS) and two gene regions: actin ( and translation elongation factor-1α (), 12 species were delimited; including four new species - , , and . GCPSR criteria were employed for species recognition, supported by morphological and cultural characters.

Departamento de Micologia Prof. Chaves Batista, Centro de Biociências, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), Avenida da Engenharia, s/n, Cidade Universitária, CEP: 50740-600, Recife, PE, Brazil.

The study of the Brazilian cave mycobiota has revealed a rich but highly diverse assemblage of fungi, with , , and being the most frequently reported genera. The present study investigated the airborne fungi and fungi obtained from the bodies of bats, guano, and the soil/sediment from the caves Urubu (in the Atlantic Forest) and Furna Feia (in the Caatinga dryland forest) in the Northeast region of Brazil. Fungal strains were identified based on morphological features and multilocus phylogenetic analyses of ITS, beta-tubulin (), calmodulin (), and RNA polymerase II second largest subunit () sequences.

Bismuth ferrites, specifically perovskite-type BiFeO and mullite-type BiFeO, hold significant technological promise as catalysts, photovoltaics, and room-temperature multiferroics. However, challenges arise due to their frequent cocrystallization, particularly in the nanoregime, hindering the production of phase-pure materials. This study unveils a controlled sol-gel crystallization approach, elucidating the phase formation complexities in the bismuth ferrite oxide system by coupling thermochemical analysis and total scattering with pair distribution function analysis.

The middle cerebellar peduncle (MCP) is the largest afferent system of the cerebellum and consists of fibres from the cortico-ponto-cerebellar tract. Specifically, several relevant diseases can present with hyperintensity in the MCP on T2-weighted/fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (T2/FLAIR) magnetic resonance imaging sequences, including multiple sclerosis; acute disseminated encephalomyelitis; neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder; progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy; hepatic encephalopathy; osmotic demyelination syndrome; multiple system atrophy; fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome; megalencephalic leucoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts; spinocerebellar ataxias; hemi-pontine infarct with trans-axonal degeneration; and diffuse midline glioma with the histone H3K27M mutation. The aim of this pictorial review is to discuss the imaging findings that are relevant for the differential diagnosis of diseases presenting with MCP hyperintensity on T2/FLAIR sequences.

Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is one of the most aggressive types of brain tumor. GBM can modulate glutathione (GSH) levels and regulate cellular redox state, which can explain its high resistance to chemotherapeutic agents. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a selective, nontoxic, and minimally invasive treatment approved for many types of cancer.
