Background: The European Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) registry, conducted between 2007 and 2012, reported the major impact of pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) on the long-term survival of patients with CTEPH. Since then, 2 additional treatments for inoperable CTEPH have become available: balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA), and an approved oral drug therapy with the guanylate cyclase stimulator riociguat. The current registry aimed to evaluate the effect of these new therapeutic approaches in a worldwide context.

Article Synopsis
  • Fungal musculoskeletal infections can be challenging to identify due to their subtle symptoms and rarity, often overlapping with other diseases.
  • These infections spread through blood, direct contact, or nearby tissue extension, with risk factors including weakened immune systems and exposure at work, and can either be isolated or part of broader systemic issues.
  • Imaging plays a key role in diagnosis, revealing nonspecific signs like bone destruction and joint changes, but may also provide clues when combined with patient history and geographical context.

Background And Purpose: In thrombolysis-eligible patients with acute ischemic stroke, there is uncertainty over the most appropriate systolic blood pressure (SBP) lowering profile that provides an optimal balance of potential benefit (functional recovery) and harm (intracranial hemorrhage). We aimed to determine relationships of SBP parameters and outcomes in thrombolyzed acute ischemic stroke patients.

Methods: Post hoc analyzes of the ENCHANTED (Enhanced Control of Hypertension and Thrombolysis Stroke Study), a partial-factorial trial of thrombolysis-eligible and treated acute ischemic stroke patients with high SBP (150-180 mm Hg) assigned to low-dose (0.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a noncancerous growth of the transitional zone of the prostate, which surrounds the prostatic urethra. Consequently, it can cause lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and bladder outlet obstruction symptoms that may substantially reduce a patient's quality of life. Several treatments are available for BPH, including medications such as α-blockers and 5α-reductase inhibitors and surgical options including transurethral resection of the prostate and prostatectomy.

Imaging Patterns of Toxic and Metabolic Brain Disorders.

Radiographics

October 2019

From the Neuroradiology Section, Institute of Radiology, Hospital das Clínicas, Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (HC-FMUSP), R Dr Ovídio Pires de Campos 75, São Paulo, SP 05403-010, Brazil (A.M.d.O., M.V.P., G.T.d.S., C.d.C.L., L.F.d.S.G., L.T.L.); Neuroradiology Section, Department of Radiology, Hospital Sirio-Libanês, São Paulo, Brazil (A.P.F.V.); Neuroradiology Division, Department of Radiology, University of Minnesota Medical Center, Minneapolis, Minn (A.M.M.); and Division of Neuroradiology, Santa Casa de São Paulo School of Medical Sciences, São Paulo, Brazil (A.J.d.R.).

Toxic and metabolic brain disorders are relatively uncommon diseases that affect the central nervous system, but they are important to recognize as they can lead to catastrophic outcomes if not rapidly and properly managed. Imaging plays a key role in determining the most probable diagnosis, pointing to the next steps of investigation, and providing prognostic information. The majority of cases demonstrate bilateral and symmetric involvement of structures at imaging, affecting the deep gray nuclei, cortical gray matter, and/or periventricular white matter, and some cases show specific imaging manifestations.

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is one of the most abundantly produced synthetic polymers and is accumulating in the environment at a staggering rate as discarded packaging and textiles. The properties that make PET so useful also endow it with an alarming resistance to biodegradation, likely lasting centuries in the environment. Our collective reliance on PET and other plastics means that this buildup will continue unless solutions are found.

From the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences, BHF Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre, College of Medicine, Veterinary and Life Sciences, University of Glasgow (K.B.N., A.N.D.C., R.A.M.L., F.J.R., A.A., A.C.M., R.M.T.); Department of Physics and Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Ribeirao Preto (K.B.N., A.M.d.O.) and Department of Pharmacology (R.A.M.L., R.C.T.), University of Sao Paulo, Ribeirao Preto, SP, Brazil; and Department of Biological Sciences, Federal University of Goias, Jatai, GO, Brazil (N.S.L.).

Adipocytes produce adipokines, including chemerin, a chemoattractant that mediates effects through its ChemR23 receptor. Chemerin has been linked to endothelial dysfunction and vascular injury in pathological conditions, such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension. Molecular mechanisms underlying this are elusive.
