Introduction: Immune response dysregulation has been implicated in the development of intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired pneumonia. We aimed to determine differences in the longitudinal blood transcriptional response between patients who develop ICU-acquired pneumonia (cases) and those who do not (controls).

Methods: We performed a case-cohort study in mechanically ventilated trauma and surgery patients with ICU stays >2 days, enrolled in 30 hospitals across Europe.

Signaling crosstalk of Galectin-3, β-catenin, and estrogen receptor in androgen-independent prostate cancer DU-145 cells.

J Steroid Biochem Mol Biol

January 2025

Laboratory of Experimental Endocrinology, Department of Pharmacology, Escola Paulista de Medicina (EPM), Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), São Paulo, SP 04039-032, Brazil. Electronic address:

The aims of this study were to investigate the localization of non-phosphorylated β‑catenin and Galectin-3 (GAL-3), the regulation of the expression of both proteins by activation of estrogen receptors (ERs) and their role in tumorigenic characteristics of androgen-independent prostate cancer DU-145 cells. DU-145 cells were cultured in the absence (control), and presence of 17β-estradiol (E2). Cells were also untreated or pre-treated with the inhibitor of GAL‑3, VA03, or with a compound that disrupts the complex β-catenin-TCF/LEF transcription factor, PKF 118-310.

Over the past years, global pesticide use has increased by 20%. New insecticidal molecules, like cyantraniliprole, aim to reduce side effects due to the high toxicity of pesticides and their harmful effects on health and the environment. Its mechanism involves binding to ryanodine receptors, causing rapid calcium ion release.

Background & Aims: Recent epidemiologic studies on the association between higher consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and risk of incident diabetes have reported conflicting results in populations worldwide. We conducted an updated systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify the magnitude of this association.

Methods: PubMed and Embase databases were systematically searched (from 2009 to November 14, 2024) for prospective cohort studies reporting data on the association between UPF intake (defined by the NOVA classification) and the risk of incident diabetes or its complications in adults (>18 years).

Laboratory of Bioinformatics Applied to Health, Drug Research and Development Center (NPDM), Federal University of Ceará, Fortaleza, CE 60430-275, Brazil; Pharmacogenetics Laboratory, Drug Research and Development Center (NPDM), Federal University of Ceará, Fortaleza, CE 60430-275, Brazil. Electronic address:

Colorectal cancer (CRC) affects the population worldwide, occupying the first place in terms of death and incidence. Synthetic peptides (SPs) emerged as alternative molecules due to their activity and low toxicity. Proteomic analysis of PepGAT-treated HCT-116 cells revealed a decreased abundance of proteins involved in ROS metabolism and energetic metabolisms, cell cycle, DNA repair, migration, invasion, cancer aggressiveness, and proteins involved in resistance to 5-FU.

Changes in the intestinal microbiota induced by the postnatal environment and their association with hypertension.

Pharmacol Res

January 2025

Laboratory of Vascular Physiology, Department of Physiology and Biophysics, Institute of Biomedical Sciences, University of Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Electronic address:

It has been established that cross-fostering impacts the development of hypertension in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). However, the ability of the cross-fostering protocol to shape gut microbiota profile in SHR and impact hypertension is not known. In this sense, the current study explored the influence of normotensive and hypertensive postnatal environments on the intestinal microbiota structure, composition, and functional capacity of SHR and Wistar rats.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) has been classified as a neglected tropical disease by the World Health Organization (WHO), with the condition being regarded as the most significant parasitic disease affecting the nervous system. Hence, the aim of this study was to conduct a review of previously published case reports on this topic in order to ascertain whether there is an increasing trend of NCC worldwide and evaluate the cases that have been presented. After a comprehensive search of the Web of Science Core Collection using the keywords "neurocysticercosis" and "case reports", studies were selected by applying inclusion criteria.

The NorA and TetK efflux pumps mediate resistance to fluoroquinolone and tetracycline antibiotics by actively extruding these compounds and reducing their intracellular concentrations. Consequently, intense research has focused on inhibiting these efflux mechanisms using antimicrobial agents derived from natural or synthetic sources. This study used Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) to analyze the various functional groups present in p-coumaric acid.

Online analysis of Amazon's soils through reflectance spectroscopy and cloud computing can support policies and the sustainable development.

J Environ Manage

January 2025

Geotechnologies in Soil Sciences Research Group - GeoCiS, Department of Soil Science, Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture - Esalq, University of São Paulo - USP, Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. Electronic address:

Analyzing soil in large and remote areas such as the Amazon River Basin (ARB) is unviable when it is entirely performed by wet labs using traditional methods due to the scarcity of labs and the significant workforce requirements, increasing costs, time, and waste. Remote sensing, combined with cloud computing, enhances soil analysis by modeling soil from spectral data and overcoming the limitations of traditional methods. We verified the potential of soil spectroscopy in conjunction with cloud-based computing to predict soil organic carbon (SOC) and particle size (sand, silt, and clay) content from the Amazon region.

Background: The Movement Disorder Society Non-Motor Rating Scale (MDS-NMS) serves as a comprehensive clinical assessment tool for non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) OBJECTIVES: This study aims to validate the Portuguese version of the MDS-NMS, addressing the critical need for culturally adapted rating scales in Portuguese-speaking populations.

Methods: This multicenter, cross-sectional study engaged native Portuguese-speaking PD patients from 16 Movement Disorders Centers across Portugal and Brazil. We conducted a meticulous translation process into Portuguese, including forward-backward translation and cognitive pretesting.

Background: CONCORD-3 highlighted wide disparities in population-based 5-year net survival for cutaneous melanoma during 2000-2014. Studies showed a survival advantage in women, but the reasons are not completely understood. We aim to estimate trends in age-standardised 5-year net survival by sex and to examine the role of age, anatomic location and stage on the survival advantage for women worldwide.

Departmento de Doenças Dermatológicas, Infecciosas e Parasitárias, Faculdade de Medicina de São José do Rio Preto, São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo, Brazil; Department of Pathology, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX, USA. Electronic address:

Background: In dengue hyperendemic regions, the evolution of the virus is marked by frequent virus introduction/reintroduction and clade replacement events, occasionally linked to an epidemic outbreak. From 2023 onwards, an increase in the detection of DENV-3 cases has been reported in different regions of Brazil. Thus, molecular and genomic surveillance of circulating DENV strains is crucial for public health preparedness and response efforts for the disease.

Background: Postural instability is common in people with Parkinson's Disease (PwPD), increasing their risk of injurious falls. Evidence suggests a sensory reweighting deficit in PwPD, along with compensatory muscle co-contraction in response to postural challenges. During balance tasks requiring sensory reweighting, older adults exhibit elevated postural sway and muscle co-contraction, as well as longer perceptual delays, compared to young adults.
