Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Universidade Estadual de Londrina, PR-445, Km 380, C.P. 10.011, CEP 86.057-970, Londrina, Paraná, Brazil.

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) is recognized as a promiscuous legume in its symbiotic relationships with rhizobia, capable of forming associations with a wide range of bacterial species. Our study focused on assessing the diversity of bacterial strains present in cowpea nodules when inoculated with soils from six indigenous lands of Mato Grosso do Sul state, Central-Western Brazil, comprising the Cerrado and the Pantanal biomes, which are known for their rich diversity. The DNA profiles (BOX-PCR) of 89 strains indicated great genetic diversity, with 20 groups and 23 strains occupying single positions, and all strains grouped at a final similarity level of only 25%.

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ecologia (PPGECO), Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA), Instituto de Ciências Biológicas (UFPA), Belém, Pará, Brazil.

Freshwater ecosystems under the influence of human activities are subject to multiple environmental stressors that lead to biodiversity loss and habitat modification. In recent years, various organisms have been used as bioindicators to detect environmental changes by their ability to perceive changes in community attributes. A good example is the semiaquatic bugs (Hemiptera, infra order Gerromorpha) that act as predators and are sensitive to subtle changes in environmental conditions.

This brief report aimed to investigate the optical absorbance spectra of normal, dysplastic, and malignant epithelial cell lines under normal and nutritional stress conditions. HaCAT (keratinocyte), DOK (oral dysplastic), and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell lines (CA1, Luc4, SCC9) were evaluated regarding their optical absorbance after culture with 0-10% fetal bovine serum. Absorbance measurements indicated that HaCAT under serum starvation exhibited higher absorbance at blue (430 nm) and near-infrared (906 nm) wavelengths.

Currently, clinical practice has demonstrated various applications for systemic laser photobiomodulation (PBM). In recent years, an increasing number of studies have been highlighted in the literature; however, they differ in their application methods, which can be intravenous, referred to as ILIB (intravascular laser irradiation of blood), or transdermally, recently termed VPBM (vascular photobiomodulation). This review aimed to compile all findings on these techniques and critically discuss their results.

Background: Invasive systems are commonly used for monitoring intracranial pressure (ICP) in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and are considered the gold standard. The availability of invasive ICP monitoring is heterogeneous, and in low- and middle-income settings, these systems are not routinely employed due to high cost or limited accessibility. The aim of this consensus was to develop recommendations to guide monitoring and ICP-driven therapies in TBI using non-invasive ICP (nICP) systems.

Terbinafine hydrochloride (TBF) is a broad-spectrum antifungal used to treat various dermatophyte infections affecting the skin, hair, and nails. Accurate, sensitive, and affordable analytical methods are crucial for quantifying this drug. In this study, we report on the use of carbon-based electrodes for the electrochemical determination of TBF in pharmaceutical samples, including raw materials and tablets.

Structural evolution of particle configurations: Zero-temperature phases under increasing confinement.

J Chem Phys

January 2025

Departamento de Física, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, 50670-901 Recife, PE, Brazil.

In this study, we investigate the phase behavior and structural organization of colloidal particles in a two-dimensional (2D) system under isotropic harmonic confinement using overdamped Langevin dynamics simulations. We employ a modified mermaid potential, which introduces an additional short-distance term resulting in a null-force region, distinct from the conventional mermaid potential. This modification facilitates a richer exploration of self-assembled structures, revealing a variety of phases influenced by the interplay between confinement strength V0 and the interaction potential.

Background: Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists are an existing treatment option for patients with insulin-resistant states, which elicit further pleiotropic effects related to immune cell recruitment and vascular inflammation. GLP-1 agonists downregulate the cluster of differentiation 147 (CD147) receptor, one of several receptors for the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein that mediate viral infection of host cells.

Methods: We conducted an open-label prospective safety and tolerability study including biomarker responses of the GLP-1 agonist Liraglutide, administered for 5 days as an add-on therapy to the standard of care within 48 h of presentation in a cohort of 13 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic disease characterized by a lack of dystrophin caused by mutations in the DMD gene, and some minor cases are due to decreased levels of dystrophin, leading to muscle weakness and motor impairment. Creatine supplementation has demonstrated several benefits for the muscle, such as increased strength, enhanced tissue repair, and improved ATP resynthesis. This preliminary study aimed to investigate the effects of creatine on the gastrocnemius muscle in dystrophy muscle (MDX) and healthy C57BL/10 mice.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is associated with cardiometabolic risk. Although studies have shown that estradiol positively contributes to energy metabolism via estrogen receptor alpha (ERα), its role specifically in the liver is not defined. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of ERα overexpression, specifically in the liver in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD).

DNA Damage-Induced Ferroptosis: A Boolean Model Regulating p53 and Non-Coding RNAs in Drug Resistance.

Proteomes

January 2025

Instituto de Matemática e Estatística, Departamento de Ciência da Computação, Universidade de São Paulo, Rua do Matão 1010, São Paulo 05508-090, SP, Brazil.

The tumor suppressor p53, in its wild-type form, plays a central role in cellular homeostasis by regulating senescence, apoptosis, and autophagy within the DNA damage response (DDR). Recent findings suggest that wild-type p53 also governs ferroptosis, an iron-dependent cell death process driven by lipid peroxidation. Post-translational modifications of p53 generate proteoforms that significantly enhance its functional diversity in regulating these mechanisms.
