Gyrodactylidae Cobbold, 1864 is a monophyletic family of hyperviviparous species, with 36 genera and approximately 700 species. Here, we focused on one of these genera - namely Jara & Cone, 1989 - characterizing its morphological variation systematically and testing its phylogenetic position in relation to other genera in the family. We collected and describe two new species of monogenean parasites of infecting Neotropical freshwater catfishes in Mexico.

Background And Aims: Better understanding the challenges faced by patients on medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), including methadone and buprenorphine, is critical to increasing their use/retention. Social media platforms such as Reddit offer a space for patients to share their experiences with medications. We aimed to identify and characterize challenges faced by patients taking MOUD through analysis of discussions from the r/Methadone and r/suboxone subreddits.

This research paper presents the characterization of an enterocin-producing MF5 isolate and the determination of the in vitro antilisterial activity of enterocin produced by this isolate, named Ent-MF5. PCR-based screening for bacteriocin biosynthetic genes revealed that MF5 harbors multiple enterocin-encoding genes ( A, B, P and X), classified as class II bacteriocins and enterocin-P of (sharing up to 99% similarity at the genetic level). MF5 is sensitive to eight clinically important antibiotics and does not possess cytolysin activator -A, gelatinase -E and hyaluronidase -lA virulence genes.

New Food Ingredients: The Challenge of Potential New Pathogens and Spoilage Issues.

Mol Nutr Food Res

March 2025

ProBacLab, Laboratório de Microbiologia de Alimentos, Departamento de Alimentos e Nutrição Experimental, Food Research Center, Faculdade de Ciências Farmacêuticas, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

The UN Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) highlights the need to produce sufficient food commodities to meet the world's population demands and combat hunger, while also respecting the environment and adhering to sustainability principles. Since the beginning of the 21st century, new ideas, ingredients, and technologies have emerged that could significantly transform the food industry. These transformations may alter the rules of food production by integrating traditional knowledge with new technologies and scientific advancements.

Scope: The uremic toxin trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) accumulates in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is associated with its progression, cardiovascular disease, and other complications. The gut microbiota produces TMAO from substrates mainly found in red meat, eggs, and dairy. However, some saltwater fish also contain high levels of TMAO.

Introduction: Previous studies investigating socioeconomic status and tobacco consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic were survey-based. To extend knowledge beyond prevalence rates and trends of tobacco consumption, qualitative research is needed to identify individual's experiences. There is a critical gap within this context, particularly in low-middle income countries.

(CARV) is a pathogen with neuroinvasive potential, yet its impact on neuroinflammation and sickness behavior remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the neuropathological and immunological responses to CARV encephalitis in adult BALB/c mice. Mice were intranasally inoculated with either infected or uninfected brain homogenates, and clinical, histopathological, and cytokine profiles were analyzed.

The Atlantic Forest is one of the most threatened biomes globally. Data from monitoring programs are necessary to evaluate the conservation status of species, prioritise conservation actions and to evaluate the effectiveness of these actions. Birds are particularly well represented in citizen-collected datasets that are used worldwide in ecological and conservation studies.

Health care systems are social institutions simulating microcosms of wider societies where unequal distribution of power and resources translate into inequities in health outcomes, experiences and access to services. Growing research on participatory women's groups positively highlights the influence of group-based care on health and wellbeing for women, their infants, families and wider communities across different countries. With similarities in ethos and philosophies, group care combines relational, group-based facilitation and clinical care, uniquely offering an opportunity to examine the intersections of health and social care.

Background: Undiagnosed rare diseases (URDs) are a complex and multifaceted challenge, especially in low-and medium-income countries. They affect individuals with unique clinical features and lack a clear diagnostic label. Although the Undiagnosed Diseases Network International (UDNI) definition of URDs is not universally accepted, it is widely recognized.

Introduction: The Work-Related Quality of Life (WRQoL) is a complex, multidimensional concept, and its assessment is challenging due to a lack of consensus on the factors involved. While the WRQoL Scale has been validated in various countries, no translation into Brazilian Portuguese existed until this study. The primary aim was to validate the Brazilian Portuguese version of the WRQoL Scale, using psychologists as the target population, and to measure burnout and life satisfaction in this group.

Research on human language started to change when Murray Sidman and colleagues demonstrated that a participant was able to derive unreinforced stimulus relations after conditional discrimination training. This work provided the basis for a novel approach to research on symbolic behavior and fostered the development of three main theoretical accounts: stimulus equivalence (SE), relational frame theory (RFT), and naming theory (NT). These accounts unfolded in the last decades of the twentieth century, promoting intense debate and discussion within behavior analysis.

Muscle loss in cancer cachexia: what is the basis for nutritional support?

Front Pharmacol

February 2025

Cancer Metabolism Research Group, Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo, Departamento de Cirurgia, LIM 26-HC-USP, São Paulo, Brazil.

Cancer cachexia (CC) is characterized by significant skeletal muscle wasting, and contributes to diminished quality of life, while being associated with poorer response to treatment and with reduced survival. Chronic inflammation plays a central role in driving CC progression, within a complex interplay favoring catabolism. Although cachexia cannot be fully reversed by conventional nutritional support, nutritional intervention shows promise for the prevention and treatment of the syndrome.

February 2025

Oncoclinicas&Co - Medica Scientia Innovation Research (MEDSIR), Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil.

Introduction: The landmarks of Thoracic Oncology in the last two decades have been accompanied by exponential growth in costs, making it imperative to assess the real benefit of incorporating new technologies. Combining immunotherapy (IO) with platinum-etoposide chemotherapy has become the standard of care in first-line treatment of extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC). However, the absolute difference in overall survival (OS) has reached three months.

Research in the dynamics of blood flow is essential to the understanding of one of the major driving forces of human physiology. The hemodynamic conditions experienced within the cardiovascular system generate a highly variable mechanical environment that propels its function. Modeling this system is a challenging problem that must be addressed at the systemic scale to gain insight into the interplay between the different time and spatial scales of cardiovascular physiology processes.

Background: Open reduction and internal fixation or primary arthrodesis are considered gold standards for treating Lisfranc injuries. However, several drawbacks are associated with these procedures, such as joint motion loss and potential cartilage damage. More recently, the suture button emerged as an alternative treatment for ligamentous Lisfranc injuries, which can be used either alone or in combination with traditional techniques, with the potential to mitigate some of these potential disadvantages.

Early detection of renal deficient function is imperative for the success of treatments and determining prognosis. In horses, a renal ultrasound can be performed through the abdominal wall (TA) or transrectally (TR), being an important tool for the evaluation of the kidneys. Besides renal morphology, resistivity (RI) and pulsatility indexes (PI) may be early tools to detect renal injury as they reflect arterial compliance.
