Boldine reduces left ventricle oxidative stress in isoproterenol-induced adrenergic overload experimental model.

Arch Physiol Biochem

December 2024

Laboratory of Cardiovascular Physiology, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brasil.

Sustained adrenergic overload in the heart causes maladaptive cardiac remodelling, which involves oxidative stress. Boldine (BOL) has antioxidant activity and represents a novel therapeutic approach. This study explored the cardioprotective role of BOL in adverse left ventricular remodelling induced by isoproterenol.

Objective: To map the procedures and characterize the results of multidimensional voice assessment of individuals with sleep-related breathing disorders.

Method: This scoping review searched the MEDLINE, LILACS, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, ProQuest, and MedRxiv databases, manually searched citations, grey literature, and consulted with experts. It included studies whose participants had sleep-related breathing disorders and underwent voice assessment.

Unlabelled: The prevalence of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) in patients with (dentofacial deformities) DFD is high, indicating a multifaceted relationship between physical and psychosocial factors.

Objective: To identify clusters of patients with DFD based on variables related to TMD, psychological aspects, somatization, oral habits, and sleep.

Method: Ninety-two patients with DFD were evaluated before orthognathic surgery according to demographic data, facial profile, presence of painful TMD (DC/TMD), psychological aspects, oral habits, comorbidities, substance use, and sleep quality.

Impact of non-weight-dependent low-dose somatropin on bone accrual in childhood-onset GH deficient in the transition: an 18-month randomized controlled trial.

December 2024

Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP), Instituto da Criança, Unidade de Endocrinologia Pediátrica, São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

Objective: Discontinuation of growth hormone therapy (rhGH) upon completion of linear growth may adversely affect bone mineral density and content (BMD/BMC) in adolescents with childhood-onset GH deficiency (CO-GHD) and predisposition to osteoporosis. Although the benefits of weight-dependent somatropin high doses over bone gain are established, little is known about fixed low doses. We analyzed the impact of non-weight-based low-dose somatropin on bone accrual during the transition among CO-DGH patients, treated since childhood.

Department of Medicine, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, Singapore; Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Medicine, National University Health System, Singapore.

Background And Aims: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a known risk factor for hepatobiliary malignancies. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies to determine the incidence and risk factors for hepatobiliary malignancies in people with PSC.

Methods: Pubmed and Embase databases were searched from inception to April 10, 2024 for cohort studies reporting data on the incidence of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), or gallbladder cancer (GBC) in PSC.

Role of the Endocannabinoid System in Gonadal Development: Implications for Endocrine Disruption and Reproductive Toxicity.

Reprod Toxicol

December 2024

Laboratory of Animal Endocrine and Reproductive Physiology, Department of Physiology, Federal University of Paraná, Curitiba-Brazil. Electronic address:

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) plays a pivotal role in reproductive physiology, including gonadal development, though its influence on testis and ovary development has only recently gained attention. The ECS comprises lipid-derived ligands such as anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), along with cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, which are expressed in various gonadal cells. Emerging research indicates that ECS signaling is critical for testosterone synthesis and gonadal cell proliferation and differentiation.

Hypothyroidism is known to affect memory consolidation, and our prior research highlighted the potential of chrysin as a therapeutic agent to restore cognitive function. The present study aimed to investigate the action mechanism of chrysin on memory deficits in hypothyroid in C57BL/6 female mice. We assessed cognitive flexibility, declarative, working, and aversive memories while analyzing the BDNF/TrkB/AKT/Creb neuroplasticity signaling pathway and synaptic function in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex.

Alterations in functional connectivity of interoceptive and Cortico-Subcortical areas in Multiple Sclerosis-Related fatigue.

Neuroscience

December 2024

Department of Neurology, Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, OR, United States; APDM Precision Motion, Clario, Portland, Oregon, United States. Electronic address:

Fatigue in people with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS) is a poorly understood, complex, and disabling symptom. We hypothesized that the perception of fatigue in PwMS results from increased information processing in cortical areas responsible for the perception of bodily states and decreased information processing in the cortico-basal ganglia network involved in the perception of motor performance. We investigated whether PwMS who perceive excessive fatigue would have increased resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) between interoceptive brain areas (amygdala, anterior cingulate cortex [ACC], and insula) and decreased rsFC between cortico-basal ganglia premotor network compared to PwMS not reporting fatigue.

Candidiasis is an infectious disease caused by some fungi of the genus Candida. In Brazil, the incidence rate is higher than in European countries and the United States, and health problems occur mainly due to the virulence factors of the fungi, which have made treatment with commercial drugs difficult. Considering the context, plants rich in phenolic compounds, such as those of the genus Piper, have been studied due to their antimicrobial properties.

Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, Av. Albert Einstein 627, Morumbi, São Paulo, 05651-901, Brazil; Departamento de Obstetricia e Ginecologia, Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological disease that affects 10% of reproductive-aged women and characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterus. The disease is linked to a pro-inflammatory environment in the peritoneal fluid of patients, with high levels of cytokines, growth factors, and reactive oxygen species. Changes in the peritoneal fluid, such as altered immune cells and cytokines, can be linked to the immune balance in endometriosis.

Uterine leiomyosarcoma (uLMS) is a rare and aggressive cancer representing approximately 25 % of all uterine malignancies. The molecular heterogeneity and pathogenesis of uLMS are not well understood, and translational studies aimed at discovering the vulnerabilities of this tumor type are of high priority. We conducted an innovative comprehensive multi-omics integration study from DNA to protein using freshly frozen tumors.

Thiadiazines are heterocyclic compounds known for some pharmacological activities. However, the ability of these compounds and their derivatives to act as antibacterial agents and inhibitors of the efflux system in resistant bacteria remains unknown. This study aims to evaluate the antibacterial and NorA efflux pump inhibitory activities of thiadiazine-derived compounds (IJ14, IJ15, IJ16, IJ17, IJ18, IJ19, and IJ20) against the Staphylococcus aureus 1199B strain.

MicroRNAs can be found intracellularly incorporated into extracellular vesicles (EV-miRNAs) or extracellularly as cell-free miRNAs (cf-miRNAs). This study aimed to compare the diagnostic and prognostic potential of four miRNAs with recognized roles in prostate cancer as cf-miRNAs and EV-miRNAs, obtained from liquid biopsies (LB). Total RNA was isolated from whole plasma and plasma EVs from 15 controls (CTR) and 30 patients (20 with localized prostate cancer (PCa), 10 with metastatic prostate cancer (mPCa)).
