Introduction: Copy-number (CN) loss of chromosome 9p, or parts thereof, impair immune response and confer ICT resistance by direct elimination of immune-regulatory genes on this arm, notably IFNγ genes at 9p24.1, and type-I interferon (IFN-I) genes at 9p21.3.

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms which is treated with antipsychotics. However, these drugs present several side effects and, some schizophrenia symptoms, like cognitive, are difficult to treat. The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors-gamma (PPAR-γ) are expressed in dopaminergic neurons of the midbrain participating in the modulation of neurotransmitters release like dopamine.

Revisiting the concept of giant viruses.

Microbes Infect

December 2024

Laboratório de Vírus, Departamento de Microbiologia, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, 31270-901, Brazil. Electronic address:

Giant viruses have fascinated the scientific community due to their immense particles and extensive genomes. A significant surge of interest in the field has been observed over the past 20 years following the discovery of mimiviruses, the first amoeba-infecting viruses described. However, with the discovery of new amoeba viruses and those from other protists, the concept of "giant viruses" has become increasingly controversial in the scientific literature.

December 2024

Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Instituto de Química, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, 21941-909, Brazil. Electronic address:

Peri-urban conserved natural or semi-natural areas provide several ecosystem services and assist in reducing air pollution in cities. The aim of this study is to assess the contribution to the improvement of air quality of a small area (<1 km) adjacent to a city in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), which is seriously affected by vehicular and industrial emissions of pollutants. Hydrocarbon (HC) and carbonyl compounds (CC) levels were determined, by employing TO-15 and TO-11A US EPA Methods, respectively, in both the urban and green areas.

The present work investigated the application of UVC combined with electrogenerated HO (UVC/e-HO) for BTA degradation using a Printex L6 carbon-based (PL6C) gas diffusion electrode (GDE). The studies were carried out by analyzing the influence of the current density, pH and initial BTA concentration in the contaminant degradation process. Under optimal conditions using 0.

Background/objective:  Beta-alanine supplementation increases muscle carnosine content and also improves exercise capacity and performance in young adults, with mixed findings emerging from the few studies investigating its effects on older participants. Therefore, this study aimed to systematically review the evidence regarding the effects of beta-alanine on exercise capacity, muscle strength, and functional performance of older adults.

Methods:  This systematic review was conducted following the specific methodological guidelines of the Preferred Report Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses and the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale.

Trimethoprim (TMP) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) are bacteriostatic agents, which are co-administered to patients during infection treatment due to their synergetic effects. Once consumed, TMP and SMX end up in wastewater and are directed to municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) which fail to remove these contaminants from municipal wastewater. The discharge of WWTP effluents containing antibiotics in the environment is a major concern for public health as it contributes to the spread of antimicrobial resistance.

In this study, kapok fiber (KF) a hollow and hydrophobic fiber, was modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) or cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), rendering adsorbed amount of ∼0.75 × 10 mol/g. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements of dry KF/CTAB and KF/CPC evidenced a periodic distance of ∼2.

December 2024

Structural Biology Laboratory, Oswaldo Cruz Institution, Fiocruz, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Programa de Pós-graduação em Biologia Celular e Molecular, Oswaldo Cruz Institution, Fiocruz, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Electronic address:

Trichomoniasis, a globally prevalent sexually transmitted infection caused by Trichomonas vaginalis, affects approximately 278 million people each year. It presents a challenge due to resistance to the current treatment, Metronidazole (MTZ), which is also associated with side effects. Cannabis sativa, with more than 100 phytocannabinoids and numerous studies for therapeutic applications, including parasitic infections, has undergone a significant shift in acceptance worldwide, highlighted by legalizations and substantial revenue projections.

Objective: The objective of this study is to determine speech outcome differences for specific palate repair techniques and correlate these data with patient age at the time of operation.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on a cohort of consecutive nonsyndromic patients who underwent cleft lip and/or palate repair at the authors' hospital between 2010 and 2020. Only those patients who participated in at least 4 years of follow-up accompanied by audio-video recording were included.

Purpose: Craniopharyngiomas (CPs) often lead to growth hormone deficiency (GHD) in children. Growth hormone replacement therapy (GHRT) is essential for managing GHD but its impact on body mass index (BMI) and metabolic outcomes is controversial. Concerns exist that GHRT might contribute to tumor recurrence, with guidelines varying on when to start therapy post-surgery.

Food insecurity violates the right to regular access to quality food, affecting population groups unequally. In Brazil, FI is associated with both malnutrition and increased obesity and is intertwined with racial and gender inequalities, perpetuating cycles of poverty and social exclusion. This protocol aims to select observational studies that evaluate the association between food insecurity and overweight and their intersectional discussions (gender and race/color).

Background: Brazil has the second highest case count of Hansen's disease (leprosy, HD), but factors contributing to transmission in highly endemic areas of the country remain unclear. Recent studies have shown associations of helminth infection and leprosy, supporting a biological plausibility for increased leprosy transmission in areas with helminths. However, spatial analyses of the overlap of these infections are limited.

Measures to curb the spread of SARS-CoV-2 impacted not only COVID-19 dynamics, but also other infectious diseases, such as dengue in Brazil. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted not only transmission dynamics due to changes in mobility patterns, but also several aspects of surveillance, such as care seeking behavior and clinical capacity. However, we lack a clear understanding of the overall impact on dengue in different parts of Brazil and the contribution of individual causal drivers.

Resuscitation in Paediatric Septic Shock Using Vitamin C and Hydrocortisone (RESPOND): The RESPOND Randomized Controlled Trial Protocol.

Pediatr Crit Care Med

December 2024

Children's Intensive Care Research Program, Child Health Research Centre, Faculty of Medicine, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, QLD, Australia.

Objectives: Pediatric sepsis results in significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. There is an urgent need to investigate adjunctive therapies that can be administered early. We hypothesize that using vitamin C combined with hydrocortisone increases survival free of inotropes/vasopressors support until day 7 compared with standard care.

Background: Bothrops venom consists primarily of metalloproteinase and phospholipase A2 toxins, which are responsible for the acute inflammatory, coagulant and hemorrhagic action following snakebite. The local effects of snakebite envenomation by Bothrops species are particularly prevalent yet poorly studied, but include pain, edema, erythema, blistering, bleeding, and ecchymosis.

Methods And Findings: In this study, we describe the dermatopathological findings observed in a series of 22 patients diagnosed with Bothrops envenomation treated in a tertiary hospital of Manaus, in the Brazilian Amazon.
