This study characterizes the Aedes aegypti population from Fernando de Noronha Island, Pernambuco, Brazil, prior to implementing the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). The main objective was to assess changes in glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzyme activity, previously linked to cypermethrin resistance in this population, in 2010. GST activity was measured in both male and female mosquitoes, masse produced in lab, after exposure to ionizing radiation.

Phosphorus (P) plays an essential role for plant growth, but conventional P sources used in agriculture are finite and non-renewable. As a result, there is a growing need to explore alternative P sources such as sewage sludge (SS) - a P-rich solid waste and valuable renewable resource that is often mismanaged globally. Pyrolysis is a promising technique for managing SS.

Objectives: To validate a novel artificial intelligence (AI)-based tool for automated tooth modelling by fusing cone beam computed tomography (CBCT)-derived roots with corresponding intraoral scanner (IOS)-derived crowns.
Methods: A retrospective dataset of 30 patients, comprising 30 CBCT scans and 55 IOS dental arches, was used to evaluate the fusion model at full arch and single tooth levels. AI-fused models were compared with CBCT tooth segmentation using point-to-point surface distances-reported as median surface distance (MSD), root mean square distance (RMSD), and Hausdorff distance (HD)- alongside visual assessments.

The microencapsulation of Lactocaseibacillus rhamnosus GG in a matrix of sodium alginate, xanthan gum, gum arabic and chitosan hydrochloride is a promising strategy for protecting this probiotic during passage through the gastrointestinal tract. This study evaluated the influence on the viability of Lactocaseibacillus rhamnosus GG encapsulated with these polymers by external ionic gelation with vibratory extrusion and the microcapsules that showed the best results of capsulation efficiency, viability, size and morphology were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analysis (TGA) and exposure to environmental stress conditions and gastrointestinal simulation. The result revealed encapsulation efficiency values above 95 % for all formulations and survival rate higher than 6 log CFU/mL for most analyzed groups.

L-Mimosine is the main active component of the plant Leucaena leucocephala. Due to its metal-chelating mechanism, it interacts with various metabolic pathways in living organisms, making it a potential pharmacological target, although it also leads to toxicity. The present study aimed to investigate the transplacental passage of L-mimosine and its effects on embryofetal development.

As ruminants are frequently affected by periodontal diseases, understanding their microbial communities is crucial. In this pilot study, we analyzed subgingival biofilm samples of young cattle across different states: clinically healthy (n=5), gingivitis (n=5), and periodontitis (n=5) using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and co-occurrence network analysis. The findings revealed that Proteobacteria was the predominant phylum across all conditions, with Fusobacteriota constituting 27.

Background: Although self-reported symptom duration of individuals with patellofemoral pain (PFP) is usually assessed for clinical and research purposes, its accuracy has never been investigated.
Objectives: We followed up individuals with PFP over 15 months to determine the agreement between self-reported symptom duration and calculated symptom duration.
Methods: Self-reported symptom duration of 39 participants was assessed at baseline and re-assessed at follow-up.

Parmigiano Reggiano protected designation of origin (PDO) cheese inherently exhibits variability due to the characteristics of the production system, contributing to heterogeneity in the composition and properties of milk used in the cheese-making process. This variability leads to variations in cheese yield and nutrient recoveries. The direct measurement of these traits is not feasible in routine practice.

The identification of factors that influence the distribution of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is key for future surveillance and control. This study sought to understand how environmental and climate variables can interfere with VL expansion in the Doce River basin located in Brazil. This ecological study explored the influence of anthropogenic, environmental, and climatic factors on VL expansion.

Cellulose nanostructures obtained from lignocellulosic biomass via enzymatic processes may offer advantages in terms of material properties and processing sustainability. Thus, in this study, cellulose nanoparticles with a spherical morphology were produced through the enzymatic hydrolysis of cashew apple bagasse (CAB). CAB was previously subjected to alkaline and acid-alkali pretreatment, and the pretreated solids were labeled as CAB-PTA and CAB-PT-HA, respectively.

One of the most investigated molecular targets for anticancer therapy is the proto-oncogene , which is amplified and thus overexpressed in many types of cancer. Due to its structural characteristics, developing inhibitors for the target has proven to be challenging. In this study, the anti-MYC potential of lanostane-type triterpenes was investigated for the first time, using computational approaches that involved ensemble docking, prediction of structural properties and pharmacokinetic parameters, molecular dynamics (MD), and binding energy calculation using the molecular mechanics-generalized born surface area (MM-GBSA) method.

Two-dimensional (2D) silicon-based materials have garnered significant attention for their promising properties, making them suitable for various advanced technological applications. Here, we present Irida-Silicene (ISi), a novel 2D silicon allotrope inspired by Irida-Graphene (IG), which was recently proposed and is entirely composed of carbon atoms. ISi exhibits a buckled structure composed of 3-6-8 membered rings, unlike its planar carbon counterpart.

This work reports the obtention of Si,N,S-CQDs from sugar cane bagasse and their inhibitory action on the mild steel corrosion in 1 mol L HCl solution. The CQDs were successfully obtained and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Dynamic light scattering, Raman, and UV-vis techniques, also showing endogenous self-doping. The anti-corrosive activity of CQDs was investigated by gravimetric tests, potentiodynamic polarization curves, electrochemical impedance measurements, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy.
