Introduction: Epilepsy encompasses numerous syndromes characterized by spontaneous, intermittent, and abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Affecting about 1-2% of the population, it is estimated that approximately 30-40% of patients experience refractory epilepsy, which does not respond to traditional anticonvulsant drugs.

Aims: Therefore, developing novel, safe, and effective antiepileptic drugs remains a medical need.

Vascular stents and stem cells have been used in high-acuity cases for many decades, particularly in cardiology. Providing the physician with another avenue of treatment, they have had a reasonable amount of success. However, there has been very little research conducted on seeding vascular stents with stem cells when treating intracranial aneurysms.

Root Development of Tomato Plants Infected by the Cacao Pathogen Moniliophthora perniciosa Is Affected by Limited Sugar Availability.

Plant Cell Environ

January 2025

Centro de Energia Nuclear na Agricultura, Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil.

Moniliophthora perniciosa is the causal agent of the witches' broom disease of cacao (Theobroma cacao), and it can infect the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) 'Micro-Tom' (MT) cultivar. Typical symptoms of infection are stem swelling and axillary shoot outgrowth, whereas reduction in root biomass is another side effect. Using infected MT, we investigated whether impaired root growth derives from hormonal imbalance or sink competition.

This study evaluates the impact of acute pyelonephritis in pregnant women on the in vivo activity of renal OAT3 using the endogenous biomarker (EB) 6β-hydroxycortisol (6β-OHF) renal clearance (CL 6β-OHF) and AUC validated by correlating with the secretion clearance (CL) of the probe drug furosemide. Additionally, 6β-OHF formation clearance (CL 6β-OHF) as well as urinary (Ae/Ae) and plasma (AUC/AUC) ratios were also evaluated as EB for hepatic CYP3A activity. Pregnant women in their third trimester of gestation, diagnosed with acute pyelonephritis, were recruited before (pre-treatment, n = 8) and after (post-treatment, n = 8) cefuroxime treatment and resolution of acute pyelonephritis.

Advancing therapeutic frontiers in urothelial carcinoma: targeted strategies and clinical implications.

Chin Clin Oncol

December 2024

Department of Medical Oncology, Hospital Sírio-Libanês, Brasília, Brazil; Department of Medical Oncology, Hospital de Base do Distrito Federal, Brasília, Brazil.

Urothelial carcinoma poses significant challenges in clinical management due to its aggressive nature and high prevalence. While most diagnoses involve localized disease, advanced urothelial carcinoma (aUC) often leads to short overall survival (OS). Historically, platinum-based chemotherapy has been the primary treatment for aUC, although its efficacy is limited.

Short and long-term effects of experimental varicocele.

Andrology

January 2025

Department of Surgery, Division of Urology, Human Reproduction Section, São Paulo Federal University, São Paulo, Brazil.

Background: Varicocele is associated with a progressive decrease in male fertile potential, but it has yet to be determined if the duration of varicocele is associated with altered sperm functional quality.

Objectives: This experimental study investigated the time-dependent effects of varicocele on spermatogenesis, sperm parameters, and sperm functional traits.

Materials And Methods: Thirty-five mature male Wistar rats (200 ± 25 g) were included.

Cannabidiol (CBD) and Δ-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main components of Cannabis sativa plants, can interact with specific cell receptors known as cannabinoid receptors (CBs). The endogenous compounds anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) are CB agonists, and, alongside enzymes, they constitute the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and take part in neuromodulation. Several LC-MS/MS methods have been developed to quantify these compounds in biological matrixes, but a fast and simple method that can determine these analytes in plasma samples simultaneously is not available.

Introduction: Eating disorders can be irreversible and, in many cases, fatal. However, the symptoms full recovery is possible, and early diagnosis is one, of many, important factors for the success of treatment. In this sense, the screening of risk behaviours arises as a relevant alternative to improve the prognosis of patients.

Introduction: The intrauterine device (IUD) inserted immediately after delivery is a safe and effective measure for preventing unplanned pregnancies. Despite exhibiting a higher expulsion rate compared with later insertions, it proves cost-effective due to the high rate of continuity of the method. There is still a gap in the literature regarding the optimal strategy for monitoring these patients, whether it should be through clinical examination, ultrasound or both.

Introduction: The global phenomenon of population ageing is expanding rapidly, with WHO projecting that the number of individuals aged 60 and over will reach 2.1 billion by 2050, a significant rise from 900 million in 2015. This pronounced growth poses substantial challenges to healthcare systems globally, necessitating the development of effective public policies to ensure adequate access to healthcare services for the elderly demographic.

Introduction: Infertility is a complex condition that affects millions worldwide, with significant physical, emotional and social implications. Mobile apps have emerged as potential tools to assist in the management of infertility by offering features such as menstrual cycle tracking, ovulation prediction, fertility education, lifestyle modification guidance and emotional support, thereby promoting reproductive health. Despite promising advancements such as the development of apps with sophisticated algorithms for ovulation prediction and comprehensive platforms offering integrated fertility education and emotional support, there remain gaps in the literature regarding the comprehensive evaluation of mobile apps for reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

After intracranial surgery, sympathetic overdrive and increased blood catecholamine levels can contribute to postoperative hypertension, a significant clinical problem. The objective of this review was to summarize, quantify, and assess the epidemiological perspective of post-craniotomy hypertension and its association with adverse outcomes. This PROSPERO-registered systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines.

Background: Patients hospitalized outside of monitored environments may experience sudden clinical worsening requiring transfer to the Intensive Care Unit. Early detection based on the clinical nurse's identification of the risk of clinical deterioration represents an opportunity to prevent serious adverse events. Nurse worry is defined as the use of clinical reasoning combined with intuition that precedes the patient's clinical deterioration.

Background: Prescribing physical exercise as part of the clinical treatment of cancer patients has become an important strategy in the therapeutic arsenal available in the main health centers specialized in neoplastic diseases, but there is still uncertainty regarding the role of regular physical activity in modifying oxidative stress markers and antioxidants, as high levels of oxidative stress can lead to the development of carcinogens. Therefore, we assessed the effect of physical activity versus absence of physical activity on markers of oxidative stress and antioxidants in cancer patients.

Methods: We looked for randomized controlled trials that included adult with any type of cancer performing some physical activity and compared them to a control group of cancer patients with no physical activity.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) presents a wide spectrum of symptoms, the causes of which remain poorly understood. This study explored the associations between autoantibodies (AABs), particularly those targeting G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and renin‒angiotensin system (RAS) molecules, and the clinical manifestations of COVID-19. Using a cross-sectional analysis of 244 individuals, we applied multivariate analysis of variance, principal component analysis, and multinomial regression to examine the relationships between AAB levels and key symptoms.
