Towards Equitable Diabetes Care: A Global Perspective on Quality Measurement Exchange.

Health Syst Reform

December 2025

Department of Health Policy and Management, School of Public Health, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer Sheva, Israel.

In the pursuit of equitable diabetes care, international knowledge exchange (iKE) serves as a crucial mechanism for narrowing the gaps in quality within and between countries. Little is known about the process of quality measurement exchange among stakeholders from high-income countries (HICs), low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and international organizations. This study aims to analyze recent international exchanges of quality measures in diabetes care and propose a framework for enhancing quality, focusing on LMICs.

On causal inferences from retrospective and observational studies and their implications for neuraxial labor analgesia: the CHRISTMAS* study.

Int J Obstet Anesth

December 2024

Department of Opthalmology, Hadassah University Medical Center, and Faculty of Medicine, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel; Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Hadassah Academic College, Jerusalem, Israel.

Background: Observational studies should not be used to infer causation as they are prone to confounding factors, selection bias, and reverse causality. Many observational studies of labor analgesia treated epidurals as an independent exposure and concluded that "epidurals" cause dystocia, despite multiple randomized controlled trials showing no effect. We highlight this problem using reductio ad absurdum.

Time is encoded by methylation changes at clustered CpG sites.

bioRxiv

December 2024

Dept. of Developmental Biology and Cancer Research, Institute for Medical Research Israel-Canada, The Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School, Jerusalem, Israel.

Age-dependent changes in DNA methylation allow chronological and biological age inference, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Using ultra-deep sequencing of >300 blood samples from healthy individuals, we show that age-dependent DNA methylation changes are regional and occur at multiple adjacent CpG sites, either stochastically or in a coordinated block-like manner. Deep learning analysis of single-molecule patterns in two genomic loci achieved accurate age prediction with a median error of 1.

Regions of homozygosity (ROH) increase the risk of recessive disorders, and guidelines recommend reporting of excessive ROH in prenatal testing. However, ROH are common in populations that practice endogamy or consanguinity, and cutoffs for reporting ROH in such populations may not be evidence-based. We reviewed prenatal testing results (based on cytogenetic microarrays) from 2191 pregnancies in the Jewish and non-Jewish populations of Northern Israel and estimated the prevalence of ROH according to self-reported ethnicity and parental relationships.
