Soil management using fertilizers can modify soil chemical, biochemical and biological properties, including the concentration of trace-elements as cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cd) and nickel (Ni). Bacterial isolates from Cd, Cr, and Ni-contaminated soil were evaluated for some characteristics for their use in bioremediation. Isolates (592) were obtained from soil samples (19) of three areas used in three maize cultivation systems: no-tillage and conventional tillage with the application of mineral fertilizers; minimum tillage with the application of sewage sludge.

Papain-like cysteine proteases (PLCPs) in plants are essential to prevent phytopathogen invasion. In order to search for cysteine protease inhibitors and to investigate compounds that could be associated to pineapple Fusarium disease, a chemistry investigation was performed on Fusarium proliferatum isolated from Ananas comosus (pineapple) and cultivated in Czapek medium. From F.

Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of photobiomodulation therapy by light-emitting diode on osteoarthritis treatment in the knees of rats.
Design: Twenty male Wistar rats were randomly assigned into two experimental groups: OAC: animals subjected to induction of osteoarthritis, without therapeutic intervention and the group OAL: animals subjected to induction of osteoarthritis treated with light-emitting diode photobiomodulation therapy (850 nm, 200 mW, 6 J).
Results: The results of gait analysis showed no statistical difference between the groups.

Digital rectal examination (DRE) was the primary means to detect prostate diseases. The DRE has a high variability as it is based manly in the tactile sensitivity and expertise of the examiner. The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test was initially developed for surveillance of prostate cancer and later it was also used as a diagnosis test.

Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) has been increasingly used in cutaneous tissue engineering due to its low cost, ease of handling, biodegradability, and biocompatibility, as well as its ability to form composites. However, these polymers possess a structure with nanoporous that mimic the cellular environment. In this study, nanocomposites are prepared using PLA and titanium dioxide (TiO) (10 and 35%-w/w) nanoparticles that also function as an active anti-scarring agent.

Skin Flap is used in reconstructive plastic surgery. However, complications such as ischemia followed by local necrosis may occur, requiring a new surgical procedure. It is well known that photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) is an effective technique for improving microcirculation and neoangiogenesis, which contributes positively to the blood supply in the pre and post surgical period.

The Enterococcus faecalis is a microorganism that causes multiple forms of resistance to a wide range of drugs used clinically. aPDT is a technique in which a visible light activates photosensitizer (PS), resulting in generation of reactive oxygen species that kill bacteria unselectively via an oxidative burst. aPDT is an alternative to antibiotics with the advantage of not causing resistance.

Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT) is an alternative to conventional treatments of local infections such as the use of antibiotics, which may lead to the development of resistance. aPDT besides requiring the use of a photosensitiser also needs a light source do be carried out. In the search for efficient and low-cost procedure the use of multispectral polarized light (λ400-2000 nm) emerges as a possibility for the execution of aPDT.

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, and doxorubicin (DOX) has become one of the most commonly prescribed drugs. Stem cell (SC) therapy is proving to be a promising strategy to alleviate DOX adverse effects on non-cancerous cells. However, the drug also has a toxic action on SCs, reducing the efficiency of cell therapy from a preventive view.

Bioprinting technology has emerged as an important approach to bone and cartilage tissue engineering applications, because it allows the printing of scaffolds loaded with various components, such as cells, growth factors, or drugs. In this context, the bone has a very complex architecture containing highly vascularized and calcified tissues, while cartilage is avascular and has low cellularity and few nutrients. Owing to this complexity, the repair and regeneration of these tissues are highly challenging.

Acute-phase protein (APPs) serum levels have been studied in many human diseases, and their components contribute to host defense during the evolution of infectious diseases by acting as part of the innate immune system. Based on the importance of establishing new experimental models, the present investigation evaluated the modulation of APPs following inflammatory stimulus by the inoculation of Aeromonas hydrophila in tilapias. Fish were sampled 6 and 24 hours post-infection.

Background: Nanophase surface properties of titanium alloys must be obtained for a suitable biological performance, particularly to facilitate cell adhesion and bone tissue formation. Obtaining a bulk nanostructured material using severe plastic deformation is an ideal processing route to improve the mechanical performance of titanium alloys. By decreasing the grain size of a metallic material, a superior strength improvement can be obtained, while surface modification of a nanostructured surface can produce an attractive topography able to induce biological responses in osteoblastic cells.

Background: It has been difficult to find bioactive compounds that can optimize bone repair therapy and adequate osseointegration for people with osteoporosis. The nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp)/carbon nanotubes with graphene oxides, termed graphene nanoribbons (GNR) composites have emerged as promising materials/scaffolds for bone regeneration due to their bioactivity and osseointegration properties. Herein, we evaluated the action of nHAp/GNR composites (nHAp/GNR) to promote bone regeneration using an osteoporotic model.

Background: Here, electrospun fibers based on a blend of polycaprolactone (PCL), poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), and gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) were developed. The careful choice of this polymer combination allowed for the preparation of a biomaterial that preserved the mechanical strength of PCL, while at the same time improving the hydrophilicity of the blended material and human osteoblast maturation.
Methods: The morphology, chemical structure, wettability, and mechanical properties before and after UV photocrosslinking were evaluated.

Pulp wash was used as substrate for the activity of ligninolytic enzymes of the fungus . Activity of laccase (Lac) and manganese peroxidase (MnP) as well as fungal biomass occurred under four conditions: different pulp wash concentrations, pH variation at the optimal pulp wash concentration, different glucose concentrations, and different concentrations of ammonium nitrate. The best enzyme activity and biomass production were obtained with pulp wash and pH corrected to 5.

In recent years, artemisinin (ART) and its derivatives have highlighted according to their effects on highly aggressive cancers, as well as treatment of malaria and leishmaniasis, besides presenting anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity. It has also been shown that ART compounds have the ability to modulate the immune response by regulating cell proliferation and cytokine release. These effects may be beneficial and improve the treatment of cancer and parasitic diseases by increasing therapeutic success, but it has some pharmacological limitations such as low bioavailability, short half-life and limited tissue access.
