Inoculation of Bothrops jararaca snake venom (BjV) induces thrombocytopenia in humans and various animal species. Although several BjV toxins acting on hemostasis have been well characterized in vitro, it is not known which one is responsible for inducing thrombocytopenia in vivo. In previous studies, we showed that BjV incubated with metalloproteinase or serine proteinase inhibitors and/or anti-botrocetin antibodies still induced thrombocytopenia in rats and mice.

Background: Actinobacteria are major producers of antibacterial and antifungal metabolites and are growing their search for substances of biotechnological interest, especially for use in agriculture, among other applications. The Amazon is potentially rich in actinobacteria; however, almost no research studies exist. Thus, we present a study of the occurrence and antifungal potential of actinobacteria from the rhizosphere of , a native South American plant and one that is economically useful in the whole of the Amazon.

Visual deficit after spinal surgery is rare but tragic. The main causes include external eye injury, cortical blindness, central retinal artery occlusion, and ischemic optic neuropathy. In scoliosis surgery, this complication potentially arises from prolonged surgical time, high blood loss, prone position, hydroelectrolytic imbalance, and cerebrospinal fluid loss.

The reported case describes a traumatic anterior knee dislocation of a previous asymptomatic knee after a posterior cruciate-retaining primary knee arthroplasty. The described patient accidentally rolled over her knee six years after the surgical intervention. Anterior traumatic dislocation after knee arthroplasty is an uncommon event often leading to prosthetic's components revision due to its associated ligament injuries.

Rupture of the pectoralis major muscle is extremely rare in adolescents. The current literature contains only 5 reports of this condition in patients under 20 years old, with 2 reports in subjects under 16. In the present article, we report the case of a 15-year-old volleyball player who suffered a traumatic rupture of the pectoralis major in a match during the serve movement.

Reduction and fixation of glenoid cavity fractures using arthroscopy cause little surgical trauma, allowing the complementary diagnosis and treatment of potentially associated injuries (either capsular, ligamentous or tendon lesions) with promising outcomes. The authors report a case of Ideberg type III glenoid fracture with a distal clavicle fracture which underwent percutaneous reduction and bone fixation (with Kirschner wires) using an arthroscopic technique. We describe the procedure and the outcomes after 18 years of follow-up.

Common fibular nerve (CFN) palsy is the most common mononeuropathy in the lower limb, and several etiologies are described. The CFN is the minor and lateral division of the sciatic nerve; it originates in the lumbar sacral division, and many risks of compression have been described: the behavior of crossing and squatting legs, extra and intraneural compressions, local trauma, and weight loss have been increasingly reported as important and noteworthy causes. The treatment is based on the severity of the nerve condition.

Brachial neuritis, or Parsonage-Turner syndrome, is a rare disease characterized by a sudden, self-limiting pain in the upper limb followed by weakness and atrophy of the shoulder girdle muscles. Bilateral brachial plexus involvement occurs in between 10 and 30% of the patients, but symptoms are usually asymmetrical. The most common etiological factors include infection (25 to 55%) and autoimmune conditions.

Alkaptonuria (AKU) is a rare genetic condition resulting from a deficiency in the homogentisic acid oxidase enzyme, which is produced by the liver and kidneys, that interferes with the metabolism of the amino acids phenylalanine and tyrosine. Although it may not cause symptoms, AKU can lead to ochronosis, the abnormal accumulation in body tissues of a pigment called alkapton. Over time, this pigment accumulation in the joints may result in secondary osteoarthritis known as ochronotic arthropathy, the most debilitating form of the disease.

The diabetic foot consumes a large number of resources and has a profound negative impact on quality of life, representing the major non-traumatic cause of lower limb amputation in adults. The present report describes a diabetic patient with a recurrent plantar ulcer in the topography of the heads of the second, third, and fourth metatarsals. The patient was treated using the distal metatarsal diaphyseal osteotomy (DMDO) technique in these bones, an Akin-type percutaneous osteotomy in the proximal phalanx of the hallux, and debridement.

The pan-cancer and multi-omics approach is motivated by the genetic and molecular complexity inherent in the varied types of cancer. This method presents itself as a crucial resource for advancing early diagnosis, defining prognoses and identifying treatments that share common bases between different forms of tumors. The aim of this article is to explore pan-cancer analysis in conjunction with multi-omics strategies, evaluating laboratory, computational, clinical procedures and their consequences, as well as examining the tumor microenvironment, epigenetics and future directions of these technologies in patient management.
