Many clearwater lakes increasingly show symptoms of eutrophication, but the underlying causes are largely unknown. We combined long-term water chemistry data, multi-year sediment trap measurements, sediment analyses and simple mass balance models to elucidate potential causes of eutrophication of a deep temperate clearwater lake, where total phosphorus (TP) concentrations quadrupled within a decade, accompanied by expanding hypolimnetic anoxia. Discrepancies between modeled and empirically determined P inputs suggest that the observed sharp rise in TP was driven by internal processes.

This study describes the seasonal course of denitrifying and nitrate-reducing bacteria in a dimictic mesotrophic lake (Lake Scharmützelsee, Brandenburg, Germany) within a three-year period from 2011 to 2013. The bacterial cell numbers were quantified by the fluorescence microscopy, most probable number (MPN) and PCR-dependent quantification of the chromosomal 16S rDNA and of the and gene copy number. The highest seasonal differences (up to three orders of magnitudes) have been measured using MPN in the epilimnion.

Blooms of the red, filamentous cyanobacterium Planktothrix rubescens occur frequently in pre-alpine lakes in Europe, often with concomitant toxic microcystin (MC) production. Trophic transfer of MCs has been observed in bivalves, fish, and zooplankton species, while uptake of MCs into Diptera species could facilitate distribution of MCs into terrestrial food webs and habitats. In this study, we characterized a Planktothrix bloom in summer 2019 in Lake Mindelsee and tracked possible trophic transfer and/or bioaccumulation of MCs via analysis of phytoplankton, zooplankton (Daphnia) and emergent aquatic insects (Chaoborus, Chironomidae and Trichoptera).

While pandemic waves are often studied on the national scale, they typically are not distributed evenly within countries. This study presents a novel approach to analyzing the spatial-temporal dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. By using a composite indicator of pandemic severity and subdividing the pandemic into fifteen phases, we were able to identify similar trajectories of pandemic severity among all German counties through hierarchical clustering.
