A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of lamotrigine in the maintenance treatment of Chinese adult patients with bipolar I disorder.

Background: Lamotrigine is approved as a maintenance therapy for bipolar I disorder in many countries, including China in 2021. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of lamotrigine in controlling relapse and/or recurrence of mood episodes in Chinese patients with bipolar I disorder.

Methods: Patients aged ≥ 18 years with bipolar I disorder who met response criteria (Clinical Global Impression-Severity [CGI-S] score of ≤ 3 for ≥ 4 consecutive weeks) during treatment with lamotrigine in a 6-16 week open-label (OL) phase, and who were maintained for ≥ 1 week on lamotrigine 200 mg/day monotherapy, were randomised (1:1) to continue receiving lamotrigine 200 mg/day or switch to placebo in a 36-week randomised double-blind (RD) phase.

The Efficacy and Safety of Deep Brain Stimulation of Combined Anterior Limb of Internal Capsule and Nucleus Accumbens (ALIC/NAcc-DBS) for Treatment-Refractory Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Protocol of a Multicenter, Randomized, and Double-Blinded Study.

Backgrounds: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an emerging and promising therapeutic approach for treatment-refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The most common DBS targets include the anterior limb of internal capsule (ALIC) and nucleus accumbens (NAcc). This protocol aims to explore the efficacy and safety of the combined ALIC- and NAcc-DBS for treatment-refractory OCD.

Motivational differences in unipolar and bipolar depression, manic bipolar, acute and stable phase schizophrenia.

Background: Motivational anhedonia has been observed in patients with a wide range of mental disorders. However, the similarity and uniqueness of this deficit across diagnostic groups has not been thoroughly investigated.

Method: The study compared motivational deficits in 37 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), 32 with bipolar depression, 33 with manic bipolar disorder (BD), 30 with acute phase and 33 with stable phase schizophrenia, as well as 47 healthy controls.

Quality of Life in Patients With Methamphetamine Use Disorder: Relationship to Impulsivity and Drug Use Characteristics.

Background: The quality of life (QOL) of patients with methamphetamine use disorder (MAUD) is increasingly recognized as an important outcome. Previous studies have found that impulsivity is negatively associated with QOL in mental disorders, but this relationship is rarely confirmed in patients with MAUD. We hypothesized that impulsivity is negatively correlated with QOL in patients with MAUD based on previous findings.

Alterations of Metabolites in the Frontal Cortex and Amygdala Are Associated With Cognitive Impairment in Alcohol Dependent Patients With Aggressive Behavior.

Background: Alcohol dependence (AD) patients have a high prevalence of aggressive behavior (AB). The frontal cortex and amygdala contains various neurotransmitter systems and plays an important role in AB, which is also associated with cognitive deficits. However, to date, no study has addressed the association of metabolites in the frontal cortex and amygdala with cognitive deficits in Chinese aggressive behavior-alcohol dependent patients(AB-ADs).

Trajectories of state anhedonia and recent changes in anhedonia in college students: Associations with other psychiatric syndromes.

Background: Recent works suggest recent changes in anhedonia may be specifically predictive of key elements of psychopathology. The present study aimed to identify the trajectories of state anhedonia and recent changes in anhedonia, and to investigate their associations with other psychiatric syndromes over time.

Methods: A total of 859 college students were assessed at three time points.

The present study investigated the effect of Sijunzi decoction (SJZD), a type of traditional Chinese medicine known as invigorating spleen therapy, on anoikis (a type of apoptosis) in rat brains following cerebral ischaemia-reperfusion. Rats were randomly divided into sham, model, nimodipine and SJZD low/medium/high dose groups.

Efficacy and safety of bupropion hydrochloride extended-release versus escitalopram oxalate in Chinese patients with major depressive disorder: Results from a randomized, double-blind, non-inferiority trial.

Background: This study evaluated the non-inferiority of bupropion extended-release (XL) compared to escitalopram for acute-phase treatment of Chinese patients with major depressive disorder (MDD).

Methods: This randomized (1:1), double-blind, active-control study conducted between February 2015 and October 2016 included patients with MDD (DSM-IV) (N = 538). The treatment phase had three dose levels (level 1 [Week 1], level 2 [Week 2-4], and level 3 [Week 5-8]), which included either bupropion XL 150 mg, 300 mg, 300 mg or escitalopram 10 mg, 10 mg, 10-20 mg (once-daily), respectively.

Abnormal resting-state cerebral-limbic functional connectivity in bipolar depression and unipolar depression.

Background: Distinctive patterns of functional connectivity (FC) abnormalities in neural circuitry has been reported in patients with bipolar depression (BD) and unipolar depression (UD). However, it is unclear that whether this distinct functional connectivity patterns are diagnosis specific between BD and UD. This study aimed to compare patterns of functional connectivity among BD, UD and healthy controls (HC) and determine the distinct functional connectivity patterns which can differentiate BD from UD.

Depressive symptoms and associated factors among left-behind children in China: a cross-sectional study.

Background: To investigate the prevalence of depressive symptoms among left-behind children (LBC) in junior and senior secondary schools and examine the significant predictors of depressive symptoms, which might provide practical intervention measures for the schools.

Methods: By using stratified random sampling, 1076 (LBC) in junior and senior secondary schools were investigated in the study. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the depression self-rating scale (SDS).

Effect of Peony-Glycyrrhiza Decoction on Amisulpride-Induced Hyperprolactinemia in Women with Schizophrenia: A Preliminary Study.

Objective: The aim of this study is to observe the effect of Peony-Glycyrrhiza Decoction (PGD) on hyperprolactinemia in women with schizophrenia induced by Amisulpride.

Material And Methods: A total of 41 female schizophrenia patients receiving Amisulpride were randomly divided into placebo ( = 20) and PGD groups ( = 21). Maintaining the original Amisulpride dose, the two groups were given placebo and PGD, respectively.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of quetiapine fumarate extended-release (XR) in the treatment of Chinese patients with acute schizophrenia. Multicenter, double-blind, double-dummy, active-controlled non-inferiority randomized study in Chinese patients (n = 388) with schizophrenia randomly assigned to quetiapine XR or chlorpromazine for 6 weeks. Primary outcome was the change from baseline in Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) total score at the end of treatment.

Sibship Analysis Based on Parental Genotype Reconstruction from Any Number of Reference Siblings.

Previous analyses of alleged siblings have calculated the conditional probability of a test sibling's genotype given a reference sibling's genotype; however, more genetic information is available when two or more reference siblings are tested. Based on the root concept of identity by descent (IBD), we present a sibship method of parental genotype reconstruction (PGR) that can use any number of reference sibs. Nine PGR patterns, along with their respective IBD proportions of full-sibs and half-sibs, were identified and used to calculate joint sibship probabilities and likelihood ratio formulas.

Polymorphisms in DNA Repair Gene and Susceptibility to Glioma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Based on 33 Studies with 15 SNPs in 9 Genes.

At present, many publications have evaluated the correlation between the DNA repair gene polymorphisms and glioma susceptibility. However, the results remain inconclusive. The aim of this research is to exhaustively assess the association of genetic polymorphisms in DNA repair genes with glioma risk in human.

Comparative study of the efficacy and safety between blonanserin and risperidone for the treatment of schizophrenia in Chinese patients: A double-blind, parallel-group multicenter randomized trial.

This randomized, double-blind study compared the efficacy and safety of blonanserin and risperidone to treat Chinese schizophrenia patients aged ≥18 and < 65 years. Patients with Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) total scores ≥70 and ≤ 120 were randomized to receive blonanserin or risperidone using a gradual dose-titration method (blonanserin tablets: 8-24 mg/day; risperidone tablets: 2-6 mg/day), twice daily. Treatment populations consisted of 128 blonanserin-treated patients and 133 risperidone-treated patients.

Halo traction, single-segment circumferential fixation treating cervical tubercular spondylitis with kyphosis.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and feasibility of twenty patients with cervical tubercular spondylitis with kyphosis (CTSK) treated by halo traction, single-segment circumferential instrumented fusion combined anterior debridement, decompression and bone grafting.

Methods: Retrospective review of data on twenty patients who suffered from CTSK admitted to our hospital between January 2007 and December 2012. All of them were performed by halo traction, single-segment circumferential instrumented fusion (anterior titanium plate and posterior pedicle or lateral mass fixation) combined anterior debridement, decompression and titanium mesh cage (TMC) filled with allograft bone particles.

Effects of Clozapine and other Atypical Antipsychotics on Infants Development Who Were Exposed to as Fetus: A Post-Hoc Analysis.

Objective: To investigate the developmental effects of clozapine and other atypical antipsychotics on infants who were exposed to as fetus.

Method: The developmental progress of 33 infants who were exposed to clozapine as fetus was compared to 30 infants who were exposed to risperidone, olanzapine or quetiapine as fetus by assessing Apgar scoring, birth weight at birth, body weight, height, and the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition (BSID-III) at months 2, 6 and 12 of age. Five subscale scores of BSID-III including cognitive, language, motor, social-emotional, and adaptive behavior were also compared.

Intracranial multiple germ cell tumors: a case report and review of literature.

Intracranial multiple germ cell tumors (GCTs) are rare. In this article, we reported a case of intracranial multiple GCTs in an 18-year-old boy with symptoms of psychosis for 8 months also. Tumors in the pineal, sellar region, corpus callosum, bilateral lateral ventricles and fourth ventricle were confirmed by enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and stereotactic biopsy.

[Clinical characteristics and cognitive function of unipolar and bipolar depression].

Objective: To determine the clinical characteristics and cognitive dysfunction of bipolar depression and unipolar depression.

Methods: Fifty patients with unipolar depression, 48 bipolar depression, and 50 normal controls were assessed with Hamilton Depression Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Scale, Life Events Scale, and The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. General demographic data, clinical data, and the scores of recognitive function in the 3 groups were compared.

Neuroprotective effect of atorvastatin involves suppression of TNF-α and upregulation of IL-10 in a rat model of intracerebral hemorrhage.

We evaluated the neuroprotective effects of atorvastatin (2, 5, and 10 mg/kg) on experimentally induced intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in adult rats; controls were administered PBS. Plasma TNF-α and IL-10 levels before and after ICH were analyzed at various time points by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and neurological behavior of rats was assessed by climbing scores. At 3-days postoperatively, brain water contents and TNF-α/IL-10 expression in brain tissue were determined.

[Follow-up study on refractory schizophrenia with brain stereotaxis therapy].

Objective: To determine the long-term effect and security of refractory schizophrenia with brain stereotaxis multi-target therapy technique.

Methods: A total of 87 patients with refractory schizophrenia were treated with brain stereotaxis multi-target therapy and were followed up over 2 years. The scores of Clinical Global Impression, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, Positive and Negative Symptom Scale, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Wechsler Memory Scale, Actives of Daily Living, and Social Disability Screening Schedule were compared before and after the operation.
