Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) share overlapping symptom presentations and are highly comorbid conditions among Veteran populations. Despite elevated presentations of PTSD after mTBI, mechanisms linking the two are unclear, although both have been associated with alterations in white matter and disruptions in autonomic regulation. Traumatic brain injury-induced unfavorable outcomes in human patients have independently been associated with dysregulated levels of monoamines, especially epinephrine, although few preclinical studies have examined the epinephrine level in the central nervous system after traumatic brain injury. Epinephrine has been shown to regulate the activities of spinal motoneurons as well as increase the heart rate, blood pressure, and blood flow to the hindlimb muscles. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to determine the impact of repeated blast-induced traumatic brain injury on the epinephrine levels in several function-specific central nervous system regions in rats.

In patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), serum biomarkers may have utility in assessing the evolution of secondary brain injury. A panel of nine brain-injury- associated biomarkers was measured in archived serum samples over 10 days post-injury from 100 patients with moderate-severe TBI. Among the biomarkers evaluated, serum glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) had the strongest associations with summary measures of acute pathophysiology, including intracranial pressure (ICP), cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), and brain tissue pO (PbtO).

Objective: We tested Goal Management Training (GMT), which has been recommended as an executive training protocol that may improve the deficits in the complex tasks inherent in life role participation experienced by those with chronic mild traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disease (mTBI/PTSD). We assessed, not only cognitive function, but also life role participation (quality of life).
Methods: We enrolled and treated 14 individuals and administered 10 GMT sessions in-person and provided the use of the Veterans Task Manager (VTM), a Smartphone App, which was designed to serve as a "practice-buddy" device to ensure translation of in-person learning to independent home and community practice of complex tasks.

Acute traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is recognized as a global problem that can lead to a range of acute and secondary complications impacting morbidity and mortality. There is still a lack of reliable diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in patients with SCI that could help guide clinical care and identify novel therapeutic targets for future drug discovery. Background: Our current understanding of the impact of chronic pain on spatiotemporal gait performance has mainly been achieved through comparison studies between individuals with and without chronic pain. Further investigation into the relationship between specific outcome measures of chronic pain and gait may improve our understanding of the impact of pain on gait and may benefit future interventions that aim to improve mobility in this population.
Research Question: Which pain outcome measures are associated with spatiotemporal gait performance in older adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain?

Sleep problems are common among veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and closely associated with hyperarousal symptoms.
