Diabetic peripheral arterial disease in COVID-19 pandemic.

J Res Med Sci

July 2024

Division of Molecular Medicine, Laboratory for Advanced Genomics, Ruder Boskovic Institute, Zagreb, Croatia.

Both diabetes and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) have complex interactions with COVID-19. PAD is one of the most important underlying factors in the development of diabetic foot. The COVID-19 pandemic has also caused an increase in cardiovascular complications in those with chronic diseases, including diabetics, due to both the thrombophilic course of the viral disease and the lockdown measures applied for prevention.

Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluates patients with antibodies against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (anti-MOG-IgG), assessing their clinical, radiological, and demographic characteristics in relation to conditions like optic neuritis and myelitis.
  • Among the 104 participants, the majority were women, and the most common diagnoses included NMOSD, isolated optic neuritis, and ADEM, with a notable percentage showing symptoms resembling MS.
  • Findings indicate that older patients (>40 years) experienced more severe disability and poorer responses to treatment, highlighting the significance of anti-MOG-IgG in diagnosing NMOSD in patients without anti-NMO antibodies.

Objectives: To evaluate the clinical results of a new trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) with sinusoidal design by comparing with a traditional trifocal IOL.

Materials And Methods: A total of 79 patients undergoing uneventful microincisional cataract surgery with bilateral implantation of one of two types of trifocal IOLs, the Acriva Trinova IOL (VSY) or Acrysof IQ PanOptix IOL (Alcon), were enrolled in this prospective study. Visual and refractive outcomes, contrast sensitivity (CS), and defocus curve were assessed at 3 months after surgery.

Despite advances in diagnosis and treatment, breast cancer is still one of the three most common cancers in the world and a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Lipids play a role in many basic physiological pathways in cells, from regulating cell homeostasis to energy expenditure. As in many types of cancer, changes in lipid metabolism and their relationship have been reported in breast cancer.

This study sought to evaluate the relationship between infection and traditional and nontraditional lipid parameters, including atherogenic index of plasma, cardiogenic risk ratio, atherogenic coefficient and remnant cholesterol. After the application of exclusion criteria, 309 patients were allocated according to the absence (n = 52) or presence (n = 257) of infection. Total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) levels were nonsignificantly higher, and HDL-C levels were nonsignificantly lower, in the -infected patient group.

Aims: To determine the relationship between perception of COVID-19, fear of COVID-19 and self-care management in individuals with chronic diseases during the pandemic process.

Background: Individuals with chronic diseases are a sensitive group during the COVID-19 pandemic process; it is thought that self-care management may be adversely affected as a result of their more intense exposure to the psychological, physiological and economic effects of the pandemic. In the literature, there is no study examining the effect of perception of COVID-19 and fear of COVID-19 on self-care management in individuals with chronic diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored the impact of radiation on the bone development of rat fetuses and how melatonin might protect against these effects, using 15 pregnant Wistar albino rats divided into four groups.
  • Results showed that fetuses in the radiation group had significantly lower weights and skeletal development compared to the control, with reduced mineral content observed in bone samples.
  • The findings suggest that melatonin may offer protective effects against radiation-induced bone development issues in fetuses, contributing to limited existing research on this topic.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates whether reapproximating the rectus abdominis muscle during cesarean sections (CS) affects postoperative pain, muscle strength, and core endurance.
  • - It included 74 women (38 with muscle reapproximation and 36 without), assessing their recovery through strength tests and ultrasounds at two intervals post-surgery.
  • - Results showed that those who had their muscles reapproximated experienced lower muscle separation and greater strength and endurance in the weeks following the surgery, suggesting this technique may enhance recovery and physical fitness for new mothers.
