Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) use in people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) is revolutionizing management. Use of CGM in hospital is poised to transform care, however routine use is not currently recommended due to lack of accuracy validation in acute care, including in people with T1D. We aimed to determine real-world CGM accuracy in hospitalized adults with T1D.

Blarcamesine for the treatment of Early Alzheimer's Disease: Results from the ANAVEX2-73-AD-004 Phase IIB/III trial.

Background: There are no approved oral disease-modifying treatments for Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess efficacy and safety of blarcamesine (ANAVEX®2-73), an orally available small-molecule activator of the sigma-1 receptor (SIGMAR1) in early AD through restoration of cellular homeostasis including autophagy enhancement.

Design: ANAVEX2-73-AD-004 was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 48-week Phase IIb/III trial.

BCL11B is a Cys2-His2 zinc-finger (C2H2-ZnF) domain-containing, DNA-binding, transcription factor with established roles in the development of various organs and tissues, primarily the immune and nervous systems. BCL11B germline variants have been associated with a variety of developmental syndromes. However, genotype-phenotype correlations along with pathophysiologic mechanisms of selected variants mostly remain elusive.

Brief admission has been widely used to support individuals with lived experience of borderline personality disorder (BPD) who are experiencing crisis. This study updates a previous 2014 systematic review of the effectiveness of brief admission for individuals with BPD. Following PRISMA guidelines, four databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsychINFO and Cochrane library) were searched from 2011.

Ilio-femoral impingement angle: a new radiographic measurement.

Background: Hip dislocations after total hip arthroplasty (THA) are a debilitating complication, often occurring in deep flexion. Current 3D modelling allows for simulating the flexion angle at which bone-on-bone impingement occurs, but it is resource-intensive and not widely available for routine clinical use. Therefore, we propose the ilio-femoral impingement angle (IFIa) as a novel, simple radiographic measure to help identify patients at higher risk for dislocation using standard radiographs.

: We aimed to review the effect of lifestyle interventions in women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) based on the participants and intervention characteristics. : We systematically searched seven databases for RCTs of lifestyle interventions published up to 24 July 2024. We included 30 studies that reported the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) or body weight.

Physical therapist-delivered motivational interviewing and health-related behaviour change: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Motivational interviewing (MI) promotes health-related behaviour change and improves patient health outcomes, but the effect of physical therapist-delivered MI is unclear.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of physical therapist-delivered MI on health-related behaviour change in adults attending physical therapy or rehabilitation.

Methods: CINAHL, Medline, PubMed, PEDro, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched in August 2023.

Preconception care interventions among adolescents and young adults to prevent adverse maternal, perinatal and child health outcomes: An evidence gap map.

Objective: To identify gaps in existing evidence on preconception health interventions to improve the health outcomes of adolescents, young adults, and their offspring.

Study Design: Evidence gap map (EGM) METHODS: Following the Campbell guidelines, we included reviews and interventional studies identified through searches on Medline and other electronic databases from 2010 to July 18th, 2023. Dual screening of titles/abstracts and full texts was conducted on Covidence software, followed by quality assessment and development of 2D-EGM using the EPPI-Reviewer and Mapper software.

Ultrasound imaging of the femoral and saphenous nerves.

Introduction: Iatrogenic and traumatic injuries to the femoral and saphenous nerves, and their branches are uncommon but can be a cause of clinically pertinent lower limb dysfunction and neuralgia. Despite this, direct sonographic imaging of these nerves is not commonly requested or performed.

Methods: A review of the literature regarding the detailed relative anatomy, sonographic technique to image these nerves and their branches and their normal and abnormal appearances was conducted.

The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Australia's myasthenia gravis patients: A self-reported survey study.

Introduction/aims: Previous studies have demonstrated high morbidity and mortality in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) who acquired COVID-19. We aimed to identify the impact of the pandemic on MG disease control, treatment and quality of life.

Methods: A prospective observational cohort study was conducted to identify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Australian patients with MG.

Diagnosis and Management of Kaposi Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus Inflammatory Cytokine Syndrome in Resource-Constrained Settings: A Case Report and an Adapted Case Definition.

Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV), also known as human herpes virus 8 (HHV-8), is the primary etiologic cause of Kaposi sarcoma (KS) and KSHV Inflammatory Cytokine Syndrome (KICS). Patients with KICS demonstrate symptoms of systemic inflammation, high KSHV viral load, elevation of inflammatory markers, and increased mortality. Management requires rapid diagnosis, treatment of underlying HIV, direct treatment of KS, and addressing the hyperimmune response.

Birthing parent and companion verbal reactions following interactions with inpatient postpartum health care team members: an observational study using naturalistic filming.

Background: Respectful, equitable, and supportive health care team interactions with patients and their companions are a key part of quality health care services. Despite the importance of communication and other aspects of engagement during inpatient postpartum care, little is known about how care is experienced during this period from families' perspectives.

Methods: This study collected video and audio data with 15 birthing families (n = 9 English-speaking and n = 6 Spanish-speaking) and their health care team members during inpatient postpartum care in a southeastern United States academic medical center.

Design and Prototyping of a Novel Triple Lumen Photo-Angioplasty Device: Lumi-Solve-T.

Purpose: A triple lumen iteration of the novel photo-angioplasty drug eluting balloon catheter (DEBc) Lumi-Solve may be compromised by guidewire shadow (GWS)-mediated attenuation of balloon surface drug activation. The current study aimed to design and evaluate a novel triple lumen prototype, designated Lumi-Solve-T, to circumvent these issues.

Methods: Effects of guidewire shadowing (GWS) on vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation was evaluated using the MTT assay.

"We don't look too much into the communication disability": clinicians' views and experiences on the effect of communication disability on falls in hospital patients with stroke.

Purpose: Difficulty with communicating basic needs and attracting the attention of health professionals may contribute to falls for patients with communication disability after stroke. The aim of this study was to explore the views of hospital-based health professionals on: (a) the effect of communication disability on falls in patients with stroke; (b) falls prevention strategies for patients with communication disability following stroke; and (c) the roles of speech pathologists in the assessment, management, and prevention of falls in this population.

Materials And Methods: Online focus groups were conducted and analysed using content thematic analysis.

Exploring Gender Differences in Receipt of the 5As for Smoking Cessation for Recently-Diagnosed Cancer Patients (ECOG-ACRIN EAQ171CD).

Introduction: Smoking cessation is important for men and women diagnosed with cancer. Oncology clinicians should encourage all patients to quit and offer resources to help them do so, following the 5As framework (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, and Arrange follow-up).

Method: This study tests gender differences in self-reported receipt of the 5As by an oncology provider among 306 recently-diagnosed male and female cancer patients.

Management, outcomes and predictors of mortality of Cryptococcus infection in patients without HIV: a multicentre study in 46 hospitals from Australia and New Zealand.

Background: Limited data exist regarding outcomes of cryptococcosis in patients without HIV with few studies having compared outcomes of Cryptococcus gattii, versus C. neoformans, infection.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study in 46 Australian and New Zealand hospitals to determine the outcomes of cryptococcosis in patients without HIV diagnosed between 2015 and 2019, and compared outcomes of C.

Investigating inconsistencies regarding health equity in select World Health Organization texts: a critical discourse analysis of health promotion, social determinants of health, and urban health texts, 2008-2016.

Background: Scholarly critiques have demonstrated that the World Health Organization (WHO) approaches the concept of health equity inconsistently. For example, inconsistencies center around measuring health inequity across individuals versus groups; in approaches and goals sought in striving for health equity; and whether considerations around health equity prioritize socioeconomic status or also consider other social determinants of health. However, the significance of these contrasting approaches has yet to be assessed empirically.

High Prescribing: A Case Study of High-Potency Medicinal Cannabis Inducing Psychosis.

There has been a recent significant increase in medical cannabis prescribing in Australia despite weak evidence for its effectiveness in treating the most common indications. Concern has been raised about the potential harms of inappropriate prescription of cannabis; however, there have been no prior published cases of psychosis secondary to medicinal cannabis in Australia. We present a case of a 21-year-old Indigenous male with psychosis following switching from illicitly obtained cannabis to prescription cannabis, which resulted in Othello delusions towards his partner, violence towards her and ultimately an attempt to end his life.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) poses a significant health burden due to its high incidence, and current treatment effectiveness is hindered by drug resistance. Thus, investigation of novel therapeutic approaches derived from natural sources is crucial for improving patient outcomes.

Does the site of research evidence generation impact on its translation to clinical practice? A protocol paper.

The research-to-practice gap is a well-known phenomenon. The adoption of evidence into clinical practice needs to consider the complexity of the health care system and a multitude of contextual issues. Research evidence is usually a form of extrinsic motivation for practice change, but works best when it aligns with the intrinsic values of the system and the people in it.

Psilocybin and Motor Function: A Triple-Blind, Dose-Finding Study in Healthy Participants.

Background: There has been a resurgence of research into the potential therapeutic benefits of psychedelics for neuropsychiatric disorders. Classic psychedelics, such as psilocybin, exert complex effects on higher cognitive functions such as perception and awareness, but their impact on motor function remains unexplored. Moreover, there is a theoretical rationale for using psychedelics to promote motor retraining in certain neuropsychiatric conditions associated with motor dysfunction.
