Background: Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic relapsing-remitting, immunological, inflammatory bowel disease involving any part of the gastrointestinal tract, most commonly, the terminal ileum. Abdominal pain is a prominent debilitating symptom of CD due to continuous intestinal inflammation, associated with disease severity and complications. However, abdominal pain has shown to occur even with disease remission.

Isolated superior mesenteric dissection (ISMAD) is an uncommon condition, often diagnosed incidentally for presentations of acute abdominal pain. Early identification and treatment are crucial as complications such as bowel ischemia or vessel rupture can occur. There remain no established treatment guidelines, making surgical and endovascular indications controversial.

Introduction: Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease which can affect any area of the gastrointestinal tract, including oral tissues. The complex nature of this disease demands interdisciplinary management, especially when both intestinal and oral manifestations are present.

Case: This report presents the case of a 28-year-old male patient with oral, ileo-caecal and peri-anal CD managed jointly between Gastroenterology and Oral Medicine.

Background: Rearing poultry under stressful high stocking density (HSD) conditions is a common commercial practice to increase profitability, despite its negative effects on broiler physiology and welfare. Many feed additives are used to alleviate the negative impact of such practices. This study investigated the ameliorative effects of guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) on growth performance, ingestive behavior, immune response, antioxidant status, stress indicators, and intestinal histomorphometry of broilers subjected to HSD.

Healthy eating patterns associated with reduced risk of inflammatory bowel disease by lowering low-grade inflammation: evidence from a large prospective cohort study.

BMC Med

December 2024

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Clinical Big Data Research Center, The Seventh Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-Sen University, Shenzhen, Guangdong, 518107, China.

Background: Limited epidemiological evidence exists regarding the role of healthy eating patterns in reducing the risk of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). This study aimed to investigate the association between adherence to four established healthy eating patterns and subsequent CD or UC risk, and further examined whether these associations are linked to anti-inflammatory mechanisms.

Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 197,391 participants from the UK Biobank who completed at least one dietary questionnaire and were free from inflammatory bowel disease or cancer at baseline.

The Effect of Fiber Optic RealShape (FORS) Technology on Peri- and Post-Operative Outcomes following Complex Abdominal Aortic Repair.

J Vasc Surg

December 2024

Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA. Electronic address:

Introduction: Ongoing innovations in the minimally invasive management of complex abdominal aortic aneurysms (cAAA), including physician-modified endografts (PMEG) and, more recently, Fiber Optic RealShape (FORS) technology, have allowed vascular surgeons to expand surgical indications and complexity of care to this multifaceted patient population. Prior analyses have demonstrated intraoperative advantages of FORS in the management of cAAA for lower total procedural radiation and cannulation tasks, however, few analyses have evaluated the technology's effect on peri- and post-operative outcomes.

Methods: All PMEGs performed at our institution between 2020-2024 were retrospectively reviewed.

BACKGROUND Brunneromas are among the rarest benign tumors of the upper gastrointestinal tract. They arise from the Brunner's glands and patients have a good prognosis if treated timely and radically. Because symptoms are rare, their diagnosis can be challenging, especially regarding the smaller ones.

Aims This study aims to analyse the type of repair and post-op outcomes for individuals who underwent surgical intervention and presented with symptomatic abdominal wall hernia as an emergency. It highlights the importance of timely elective hernia management in lowering emergency presentations and any related complications. Background Abdominal wall hernias are common surgical conditions that can present electively or as emergencies, with emergency cases being associated with higher complication rates.

Hirschsprung's disease is a congenital condition characterized by the absence of ganglion cells in the intestines, leading to bowel obstruction. The lack of ganglion cells disrupts the normal motility of the intestines, causing a functional obstruction. This can lead to enterocolitis, an inflammation of the intestines, which is a serious complication in infants with Hirschsprung's disease.

Endoscopic Approaches for Managing Small Intestinal Disease.

Annu Rev Med

December 2024

1Division of Gastroenterology, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, California, USA; email:

The endoscopic evaluation and management of small intestinal diseases continue to evolve and expand. The advent of small bowel wireless capsule endoscopy and deep enteroscopy with either a double- or single-balloon enteroscope now allows complete endoscopic visualization of the entire small intestine and enables access for endoscopic interventions such as biopsies or hemostasis for most of the small bowel. New endoscopic techniques are available to treat proximal malignant small bowel obstruction, including intraluminal stents and endoscopic gastrojejunal stents.
