Protective effect of cinnamon against acetaminophen-mediated cellular damage and apoptosis in renal tissue.

Acetaminophen, APAP, is a common over-the-counter drug with antipyretic-analgesic action. When APAP is used in large doses, it causes hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity but safe at therapeutic doses. Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) is extensively used in folk medicine due to its high content of natural antioxidants.

An overall reduction in the incidence of AIDS and a change in the spectrum of lung disease have been noticed in persons living with HIV (PLHIV). Our aim was to provide an epidemiological update regarding the prevalence of lung diseases in PLHIV hospitalised in France.We analysed the prevalence of lung disease in PLHIV hospitalised in France from 2007 to 2013, from the French nationwide hospital medical information database, and assessed the association between HIV and incident noninfectious disease over 4 years of follow-up.

Multidimensional impact of breast cancer screening: Results of the multicenter prospective optisoins01 study.

Breast cancer (BC) screening has been developed to detect earlier stage tumors associated with better prognosis. The aim of study was to evaluate the impact of BC screening on therapeutic management of patients with first operable BC, and on costs, patients' needs, and working life. OPTISOINS01 was a multicenter, prospective observational study which aimed to identify the main care pathway of early BC.

Anti-Inflammatory, Immunomodulatory, and Antioxidant Activities of Allicin, Norfloxacin, or Their Combination against Infection in Male New Zealand Rabbits.

The present study investigated the efficacy of allicin as an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunostimulant agent in reducing the severity of () type B infection in rabbits. Fifty New Zealand rabbits, 5 weeks old, were divided equally into five groups. Except for group 1, all groups were intranasally infected with type B (2 × 10 colony forming units/ml/rabbit).

Antagonistic effects of Spirulina platensis on diazinon-induced hemato-biochemical alterations and oxidative stress in rats.

Spirulina platensis (SP) is a traditionally used microalga for a wide range of pharmacological activities, including amelioration of heavy metals and pesticides toxicity. This study evaluated the antioxidant and organoprotective effects of SP against diazinon (DZN)-induced subacute toxicity on the blood, heart, liver, and kidneys of male Wistar albino rats. Diazinon (20 mg/kg, subcutaneous) was administered to animals either alone or along with an oral pure SP powder at doses of 500 and 1000 mg/kg.

Cost-effectiveness of diagnostic tests for threatened preterm labor in singleton pregnancy in France.

Background: Previous studies have showed that the early diagnosis of threatened preterm labor decreases neonatal morbidity and mortality, avoids maternal morbidity induced by antepartum bed rest and unnecessary treatment, and reduces costs. Although there are many diagnostic tests, none is clearly recommended by international guidelines. The aim of our study was to compare seven diagnostic methods in terms of effectiveness and cost using a decision analysis model in singleton pregnancy presenting threatened preterm labor, between 24 and 34 weeks of gestation.

Continuous Anti-TNFα Use Throughout Pregnancy: Possible Complications For the Mother But Not for the Fetus. A Retrospective Cohort on the French National Health Insurance Database (EVASION).

Objectives: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) need long-term treatment, which can influence pregnancies in young women. Uncontrolled IBD is associated with poor pregnancy outcomes. Despite the labeling of Anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) antibodies (anti-TNFα) which indicates that their use is not recommended during pregnancy, anti-TNFα are increasingly being used during pregnancy and may expose women and their fetuses to treatment-related complications.

Is combined cataract surgery associated with acute postoperative endophthalmitis? A nationwide study from 2005 to 2014.

Purpose: To assess the incidence of acute postoperative endophthalmitis (POE) after cataract surgery combined with corneal, glaucoma or vitreoretinal surgical procedures from 2005 to 2014 in France.

Methods: In this cohort study, acute POE occurring within 6 weeks after surgery was identified by means of billing codes recorded in a national database in patients operated for cataract extraction with phacoemulsification, or corneal, glaucoma or vitreoretinal surgical procedures, either combined or stand-alone.

Results: From January 2005 to December 2014, up to 6 260 477 eyes underwent phacoemulsification cataract surgery as a single procedure and 115 468 eyes underwent phacoemulsification combined with corneal, glaucoma or vitreoretinal surgical procedures.

Thirty-day rehospitalizations among elderly patients with acute myocardial infarction: Impact of postdischarge ambulatory care.

Rehospitalization after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is common in elderly patients. It increases morbimortality and health care expenditures. The association between ambulatory care after discharge for AMI and rehospitalization has never been studied in France.

Thymoquinone and diallyl sulfide protect against fipronil-induced oxidative injury in rats.

Fipronil (FPN) is a phenylpyrazole insecticide, widely used for agricultural and veterinary activities. Early reports indicated that FIP organ toxicity is primarily mediated by the induction of oxidative stress. Both thymoquinone (TQ) and diallyl sulfide (DAS) are natural antioxidants with established health benefits.

How did episiotomy rates change from 2007 to 2014? Population-based study in France.

Background: Since the 2000s, selective episiotomy has been systematically recommended worldwide. In France, the recommended episiotomy rate in vaginal deliveries is less than 30%. The aims of this study were to describe the evolution of episiotomy rates between 2007 and 2014, especially for vaginal deliveries without instrumental assistance and to assess individual characteristics and birth environment factors associated with episiotomy.

Intermittent versus constant aerobic exercise in middle-aged males: acute effects on arterial stiffness and factors influencing the changes.

Purpose: Both constant and intermittent acute aerobic exercises have been found to decrease arterial stiffness. However, direct comparisons of these two types of exercise are sparse. It is not known which type of exercise has the greatest effect.

Burnout and depressive symptoms are not primarily linked to perceived organizational problems.

In this 257-participant study (76% female; mean age: 44.84), we examined two ideas that are widespread among burnout researchers: (a) the idea that burnout is primarily related to occupational-level factors; and (b) the idea that burnout should be considered a sentinel indicator in research on negative occupational outcomes. We investigated the links between burnout and a series of generic and work-related variables, namely, depressive symptoms, neuroticism, extraversion, effort-reward imbalance in the job [ERI], social support at work (SSW), and turnover intention.

Long-term compliance with a validated intravenous insulin therapy protocol in cardiac surgery patients: a quality improvement project.

Quality Problem: Safe and efficient blood glucose (BG) level control after cardiac surgery relies on an intensive care unit (ICU) team-based approach, including implementation of a dynamic insulin therapy protocol (ITP). Long-term compliance with such a complex protocol is poorly addressed in the literature. The aim of this study was to assess the long-term compliance of nurses with the ITP, 7 years after its implementation in the ICU.

Determinants of return at work of breast cancer patients: results from the OPTISOINS01 French prospective study.

Introduction: Return to work (RTW) after breast cancer (BC) is still a new field of research. The factors determining shorter sick leave duration of patients with BC have not been clearly identified. The aim of this study was to describe work during BC treatment and to identify factors associated with sick leave duration.

The authors' objectives are to investigate the therapeutic effect of alkaloid extract of cyanobacteria Spirulina platensis on the lipid profile of hypercholesterolemic male rabbits and to identify the active compounds in the alkaloid extract. Male rabbits were divided into four groups of six animals. The intact rabbits in the first group served as a negative control.
