A recent study demonstrated that gravi-incompetent coleoptile-less seedlings of rye exhibit gravi-competence after exogenous application of ethylene. Treatments and conditions which induce and interfere with this phenomenon were analysed in more detail. The deuteromycete Trichoderma atroviride is able to solubilize lignite in dependence on a given carbon source for growth. Subsequent to inversion, horizontally pre-gravistimulated coleoptiles exhibit an increased gravicurvature capacity as compared to vertically pre-gravistimulated and subsequently horizontally gravistimulated coleoptiles. This indicates that gravistimulated inhibition of growth of the upper organ flank during gravicurvature is mediated via the retention of wall loosening potential. The minimum dose (stimulus x time [gs]) eliciting a visible gravitropic response, has been determined using continuous and intermittent stimulation and two different accelerations at 1 g and 0.l g. Gravicurvature in water- and auxin (IAA)-incubated coleoptiles of rye (Secale cereale L.) is similar, despite a general strongly enhancing effect of exogenous IAA on the overall (cell) elongation of these organs. Ant-plant interactions in the canopy of a lowland Amazonian rainforest of the upper Orinoco, Venezuela, were studied using a modified commercial crane on rails (Surumoni project). Our observations show a strong correlation between plant sap exudates and both abundance of ants and co-occurrence of ant species in tree canopies. Differential growth of the nodal regions of graviresponding Tradescantia fluminensis (Wandering Jew) was analysed with special respect to the extension-restricting epidermal cells of the opposite growing and growth-inhibited organ flanks. Gravicurvature of horizontally gravistimulated isolated nodes depends on auxin (indolyl-3-acetic acid, IAA) and shows a node-specific profile in which the third node below the tip showed the greatest response. The filamentous cyanobacterium Anabaena variabilis (ATCC 29413) possesses two molybdenum dependent nitrogenase systems, nif1 and nif2. The nif1 system is regulated by a developmental program involving heterocyst differentiation; the nif2 system is expressed in all cells only under anaerobic conditions and the expression is controlled environmentally.
