An antiviral effect of extracts prepared from aerial parts of nine species and from leaves of two species of the genus L. was investigated for potential antiviral activity toward influenza A (H1N1) virus. The toxicity of dry extracts was analyzed, and the most selective extract was identified in vitro.

This study considers , the species that was first described in 1880 and then 30 years later and is, however, still synonymized with . The morphological relationship between these two species and , a previously unplaced name, has been assessed here.

(Marchantiophyta): A New Taxon from Indochina, the Unique Largest Species in the Genus.

Plants (Basel)

is one of the most ancient extant liverwort genera, within which the genetic diversity is quite high, whereas the morphological diversity, owing to the supposed stasis, is quite low. Unusually large plants of this genus were collected in North Vietnam and are described here as new-to-science species via an integrative approach. The two studied specimens do not reveal variability in the sequenced ITS1-2 nrDNA and L-F cpDNA loci, are clearly separated from other species by the level of genetic distances, and maintain a stable position on the reconstructed phylogenetic trees.

The Khanka Lowland forest-steppe is the most eastern outpost of the Eurasian steppe biome. It includes unique grassland plant communities with rare steppe species. These coenosis have changed under the influence of anthropogenic activity, especially during the last 100 years and included both typical steppe species and nemoral mesophytic species.

Background And Aims: The Labrador teas (genus Rhododendron, subsection Ledum) are a complex of species widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. They occupy cold-resistant plant communities from highlands to forest understorey and wetland habitats almost circumboreally and they are especially abundant in Northeast Asia and northern North America, yet there are no clear species boundaries in this group. The genetic structure of species of subsect.

The Japanese subalpine zone is dominated by an ecologically important forest biome, subalpine coniferous forest, constituting a distinct assemblage of cold-tolerant angiosperm and conifer species. While being relatively intact compared to other forest biomes in Japan, subalpine coniferous forests are under significant threat from deer browsing, global warming and small population size effects. However, there is a severe lack of genetic resources available for this biome's major constituent plant species.

Improving Tree Seedling Quality Using Humates Combined with Bacteria to Address Decarbonization Challenges through Forest Restoration.

Plants (Basel)

May 2024

Department of Environment and Rational Use of Natural Resources, Faculty of Business Ecosystem and Creative Technologies, Ufa State Petroleum Technological University, ul. Kosmonavtov 1, 450064 Ufa, Russia.

Improving the quality of tree planting material for carbon sequestration through reforestation can help solve environmental problems, including the need to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of using humic substances in combination with rhizosphere microorganisms DA1.2 and sp.

A quarter of Asian elephants are captive, with greater than 90% of these tamed and cared for by handlers (mahouts) in Asia. Although taming is a much-discussed welfare issue, no studies to our knowledge have empirically assessed its impact on calves, and dialogue surrounding taming often lacks perspectives of those involved. Here, we interviewed mahouts involved in taming and monitored five physiological measures (faecal glucocorticoid metabolites (FGMs), serum cortisol, glucose, creatine kinase (CK) and heterophil:lymphocyte (H:L)) over the first 10 days of taming and following six months in 41 calves undergoing taming and 16 control individuals.

Revealing legacy effects of extreme droughts on tree growth of oaks across the Northern Hemisphere.

Sci Total Environ

May 2024

Instituto Pirenaico de Ecología (IPE-CSIC), Avda. Montañana 1005, Apdo. 202, Zaragoza E-50192, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • Forests are facing higher risks of tree death due to drought, which can alter species composition and impact the global carbon cycle, particularly with deciduous oaks replacing conifers in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • This study aimed to assess the legacy effects of extreme drought on oak growth from 1940 to 2016, examining variations across 21 species and multiple regions, revealing that negative effects can last from 1 to 5 years after drought, especially in dry areas.
  • Results showed that repeated droughts significantly influenced oak growth, with species like Q. faginea exhibiting strong negative responses, while some oaks in wetter regions experienced growth increases post-drought, suggesting diverse resilience based on climate factors.

An analysis of the phylogeny of Cephaloziellaceae was carried out based on trees constructed for previously and newly obtained sequences of five genes: nuclear ITS1-2 and chloroplast L-F, G, L, and A. Phylogenetic trees inferred from different genes are congruent for the main details; however, the position of several taxa is variable. As a result, a new phylogenetic system of the family was proposed.

Influence of Orographic Factors on the Distribution of Lichens in the Franz Josef Land Archipelago.

Plants (Basel)

January 2024

Department of Botany, St. Petersburg State University, Universitetskaya Emb., 7-9, St. Petersburg 199034, Russia.

During a geobotanical study of the Franz Josef Land archipelago, 111 lichen species were recorded on 130 sample plots. The significance of orographic factors in the distribution of lichens was assessed using principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple regression analysis. It was found that the absolute altitude and distance from the glacier are of the greatest importance for crustose lichens, while for fruticose lichens, the most critical factors were the slope exposure and steepness.

Serpentine Overburden Products-Nature-Inspired Materials for Metal Detoxification in Industrially Polluted Soil.

Toxics

November 2023

I.V. Tananaev Institute of Chemistry and Technology of Rare Elements and Mineral Raw Materials, Kola Science Centre, Russian Academy of Sciences, 184209 Apatity, Russia.

The possibility of plants growing on serpentine soils and the ability of serpentine minerals to accumulate significant amounts of metals was the basis for developing a method for using serpentine-containing materials to restore vegetation in areas with a high level of metal pollution. Serpentine-containing products obtained from phlogopite mining overburden (Kovdor, Murmansk region, Russia) with and without thermal activation were used in a field experiment on the remediation of industrially polluted peat soil. According to the geochemical mobility of the components, one of four fractions was allocated depending on the acidic (HCl) concentration of the solution used for the material treatment: readily mobile (0.

Solenostomataceae are among the most diverse and, at the same time, least described liverwort families in Pacific Asia. Many species therein are known only from type descriptions, which are sometimes incomplete. The present account is based on a study of 81 type specimens belonging to 61 species known mostly in East Asia, although also in other regions; it provides line-art figures and photomicrographs of all the studied taxa.

Liverworts of Magadan: Life on the Edge of Beringia.

Plants (Basel)

November 2023

Team of National Ecosystem Survey, National Institute of Ecology, Seocheon 33657, Republic of Korea.

Magadan Province, located on the southwestern edge of Greater Beringia, combines various floristic elements in its flora, including Beringian and circum-boreal species. The geographic position and habitat diversity of Magadan Province predicts its liverwort flora is one of the richest hemiarctic floras in Asia. The distribution of species throughout the region is uneven, and while its southern part shows close connections with the suboceanic floras of Kamchatka, the middle and central parts are clearly related to the floras of Chukotka, where the Beringian land bridge directly lies in the past.
