Objective: Cognitive processing therapy (CPT), a 12-session, gold-standard treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and written exposure therapy (WET), a brief, five-session treatment, have similar treatment efficacy. The aim of the present study was to identify predictors of long-term treatment outcomes of WET and CPT using clients' written narratives.

Method: Narratives from both treatments were coded with the Change and Growth Experiences Scale coding system to identify predictors of long-term PTSD symptom outcomes.

Lessons Learned Through Adaptation of a Model Successful during the COVID Pandemic: Expanding HIV Self-testing for Persons Who Use Drugs.

J Addict Med

December 2024

From the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, Boston, MA (AH); Section of Infectious Diseases, Boston Medical Center, Boston, MA (ES, HVB, SEM, SAA); and Section of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, Boston, MA (SAA).

The US overdose crisis is driving a surge in HIV diagnoses among persons who inject drugs (PWID). Innovative approaches are needed to address this increase in cases. Although HIV self-testing (HIVST) was hailed as a potential "game-changer" upon initial approval by the Food and Drug Administration over a decade ago, this convenient testing modality has not reached its full potential to impact the HIV epidemic.

Background: Systemic sclerosis-related pulmonary hypertension (SSc-PH) is a heterogeneous disease, often complicated by concomitant left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. However, the contribution of heterogeneity in LV dysfunction is unclear. The objective in this study was to identify regional clusters of LV longitudinal strain via echocardiography to determine how subgroups of LV dysfunction contribute to mortality in SSc-PH.

J Spinal Cord Med

December 2024

Veterans Health Administration, United States Department of Veterans Affairs, Spinal Cord Injuries & Disorders National Program Office (11SCID), Washington, District of Columbia, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has managed the Spinal Cord Injury and Disorder Registry (VHA SCIDR) since 1994, tracking cases of US Veterans with spinal cord injuries through various data acquisition methods.
  • The objective was to consolidate and harmonize three decades of historical data into an automated system while detailing the population characteristics of the identified Veterans.
  • From 1994 to 2022, the registry identified 52,407 Veterans with spinal cord injuries, predominantly male (96.95%) and mostly White (56.09%), with a significant portion being traumatic injuries (53.39%).

Deep learning and transfer learning for brain tumor detection and classification.

Biol Methods Protoc

November 2024

Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, Computational Neuroscience and Vision Lab, Center for Systems Neuroscience, and Program for Neuroscience, Boston University, Boston, MA, 02215, United States.

Article Synopsis
  • Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are advanced tools for image classification that mimic biological vision systems and allow for transfer learning, enabling them to adapt knowledge from one task to another.
  • This study examines the effectiveness of using CNNs for brain cancer detection by incorporating a unique transfer learning step from camouflage animal detection, enhancing the models' ability to recognize tumors in MRI scans.
  • Results indicated that these networks not only accurately identified brain tumors but also considered surrounding tissue changes, demonstrating a level of performance comparable to trained radiologists.

Introduction: The American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recommends against cannabis use during pregnancy and lactation ('perinatal cannabis use') given its association with negative parent-child health outcomes. However, cannabis is becoming increasingly available and used during pregnancy, and perceptions of safety are correspondingly increasing. For individuals who are unable or unwilling to cease use during pregnancy and lactation, harm reduction is the best available evidence-based practice to promote health.

Objective: The objective of this retrospective study is to identify factors associated with loss to follow-up for postconcussion clearance in pediatric patients by comparing loss to follow-up and full clearance patients.

Study Design: This retrospective single-center cohort study analyzed 140 consecutive patients at a pediatric concussion clinic of a safety-net hospital for loss to follow-up, defined as not achieving clearance at last appointment. Univariate and multivariate regression models were fit on variables of interest, including demographic, mechanism and severity of concussion, and characteristics of the first evaluation postconcussion and follow-up management.
