Compartment syndrome is an orthopaedic emergency with moderate-to-severe sequela (pain, muscle contracture, nerve damage, infection, rhabdomyolysis, renal failure, etc.) if inadequately treated and can be difficult to diagnose in a timely fashion. Further complicating timely diagnosis are atypical presentations resulting in compartment syndrome.

Study Objective: Racial inequities are pervasive throughout healthcare. We sought to assess if race and ethnicity are associated with emergency department (ED) point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) usage compared with radiology-ordered ultrasounds as our primary outcome and a secondary outcome of nurse-driven ultrasound ordering for early pregnancy.
Methods: In this retrospective, observational cohort study between June 2015 and December 2021, we assessed ED physician POCUS use in relation to Radiology (RADUS) ultrasound for first trimester pregnancy with race and ethnicity as our primary variable.

Diet-related chronic diseases account for seven out of the ten leading causes of death in the USA. Food is Medicine (FIM) interventions can be effective adjuncts to standard medical care to address this cost burden. While the Food is Medicine Pyramid recommends some culinary skill development when integrating FIM into healthcare, the emphasis is on medically tailored meals and food provision.

Purpose: This study described pediatric nurses' professional quality of life during COVID-19 and explored demographic/clinical practice factors independently associated with compassion satisfaction (CS), burnout (BO), and secondary traumatic stress (STS).
Design And Methods: The Relational Caring Complexity Theory was used. This study employed a cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational design to describe professional quality of life of pediatric nurses (demographic questionnaire and ProQOL 5 measure) working during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We characterized experiences and strategies used by frontline healthcare workers to prevent severe-acute-respiratory-syndrome-related coronavirus transmission at work and to household members during the coronavirus disease pandemic. Alongside an online questionnaire (n = 234), remote semi-structured interviews (n = 23: 15 clinicians, 8 non-clinicians) were conducted in 2021. Mitigation challenges and facilitators were identified from data to represent experiences as a process considering the before, during, and after work shifts.

Background: Pulmonary large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) is an uncommon subtype of lung cancer believed to represent a spectrum of tumors sharing characteristics of both small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Other groups have proposed genomic LCNEC subtypes, including small cell-like, non-small cell-like, and carcinoid-like subtypes. The primary goal of this study was to better define the NSCLC-like subtype with comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP).

Prenatal opioid exposure is a major health concern in the United States, with the incidence of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) escalating in recent years. NOWS occurs upon cessation of in utero opioid exposure and is characterized by increased irritability, disrupted sleep patterns, high-pitched crying, and dysregulated feeding. The main pharmacological strategy for alleviating symptoms is treatment with replacement opioids.

Background: Headaches during pregnancy and the post-partum period may be due to either an exacerbation of a pre-existing neurological presentation, a new pregnancy-related process, or a non-pregnancy related condition. Key physiologic changes during pregnancy and the post-partum period contribute to the vulnerability of this patient population and the increased risk of complications.
Objective Of The Review: Review causes of headaches in pregnant and post-partum patients as well as neuroimaging techniques performed.

Objective: A breast imaging nurse navigator (NN) was established with the goals to enhance the patient experience after biopsy, improve care timeliness, accuracy, and coordination, facilitate direct communication to patients, and increase care retention within our system. Our aim was to determine the impact of NN on patient care time metrics, communication, documentation, compliance, and care retention at our institution after breast biopsy.
Methods: Retrospective review of a six-month period before (5/1/17-10/31/17) and after (5/1/19-10/31/19) establishment of a nurse navigator in our breast imaging department was performed, including 498 patients in the pre-navigation (pre-NN) group and 526 patients in the post-navigation (post-NN) group.

Background: DNA methylation (DNAm) in cord blood has been associated with various prenatal factors and birth outcomes. This study sought to fill an important knowledge gap: the link of cord DNAm with child postnatal growth trajectories from birth to age 18 years (y).
Methods: Using data from a US predominantly urban, low-income, multi-ethnic birth cohort (N = 831), we first applied non-parametric methods to identify body-mass-index percentile (BMIPCT) trajectories from birth to age 18 y (the outcome); then, conducted epigenome-wide association study (EWAS) of the outcome, interrogating over 700,000 CpG sites profiled by the Illumina Infinium MethylationEPIC BeadChip.

Recent evidence implicates a gut-first pathogenesis in the enteric nervous system (ENS) within a portion of PD patients, yet in vitro investigations have primarily focused on the central nervous system. Here, the preformed fibril (PFF) PD model is applied with co-administered groups of butyrate and lipopolysaccharide to model the effects of the local gut microbiome. Significant PFF uptake and retention occur in isolated rat enteric neurons compared to untreated controls resulting in increasing immunostained aggregate conformation-specific, alpha-synuclein (a-Syn) average intensity between 6 µg PFF and untreated controls.

As rates of substance use have increased in the United States, rates of substance-involved pregnancies have also been on the rise, inspiring new civil policies designed to punish pregnant and parenting individuals who engage in substance use or are living with an untreated substance use disorder. Proponents of punitive civil policies argue that such policies will deter substance use behaviors and/or that substance use during pregnancy deserves punishment for harming the fetus. Current scientific evidence invalidates both claims, offering compelling evidence that punitive civil policies often worsen the harms of substance use for both parent and child.

Drug-induced homicide (DIH) laws typically allow for the prosecution of drug distribution resulting in an overdose fatality as equivalent to homicide or manslaughter. Despite vigorous debate about the appropriateness of DIH laws as a response to overdose, the public health impacts of this increasingly common prosecutorial strategy remain unknown. In this policy analysis, we take up the question of how DIH prosecutions impact local persons and communities through the lens of a high-profile DIH conviction that took place in Haywood County, a rural county located in the Appalachian region of western North Carolina.
