There is a growing appreciation of the role of lung stem/progenitor cells in the development and perpetuation of chronic lung disease including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Human amniotic epithelial cells (hAECs) were previously shown to improve lung architecture in bleomycin-induced lung injury, with the further suggestion that hAECs obtained from term pregnancies possessed superior anti-fibrotic properties compared with their preterm counterparts. In the present study, we aimed to elucidate the differential effects of hAECs from term and preterm pregnancies on lung stem/progenitor cells involved in the repair.

The focus of dietary therapy for long chain fatty acid oxidation disorders (LC-FAODs) is to minimize fatty acid oxidation by avoiding fasting and providing sufficient calories. Dietary therapy involves restriction of long-chain triglycerides (LCT), and provision of medium-chain triglycerides as an alternate energy source. It is well established that the use of breast milk through the first year of a newborn's life has significant health benefits.

Cryopreserved valved femoral vein homografts for right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction in infants.

JTCVS Open

December 2020

Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Children's National Health System, Washington, DC.

Background: We have previously reported use of cryopreserved valve femoral vein homograft (FVH) conduits for biventricular repairs in infants needing right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) reconstruction. This study aims to compare FVH conduits with aortic (A) and pulmonary (P) homografts with regards to intermediate- and long-term outcomes.

Methods: Retrospective review was conducted of all infants between 2004 and 2016 who underwent biventricular repair with RVOT reconstruction using homograft conduits.

Purpose: To compare postoperative pain scores and opioid use between patients undergoing a standard arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) using hamstring autograft with those undergoing a suture repair augmented with an extracellular matrix scaffold (bridge-enhanced ACL repair) performed through an arthrotomy and to determine factors predictive of postoperative opioid use and levels of overprescription.

Methods: A nonrandomized controlled trial was conducted with 20 patients (10 ACLR, 10 bridge-enhanced ACL repair), aged 18 to 35 years. All surgeries were performed by a single surgeon.

Over the past 20 years, our knowledge regarding evidence-based psychological interventions for pediatric chronic pain has dramatically increased. Unfortunately, access to evidence-based pain management interventions remains a challenge for many children and adolescents who suffer with persistent pain. Reducing patient burden and system-level barriers to care are a central target of clinical innovations in pain treatment intervention.

Article Synopsis
  • Out of 63 patients tested, nearly half of the causal variants were found to be de novo, and a positive family history didn't correlate with finding a causal variant.
  • Reevaluation of genetic variants led to a reduction in those classified as uncertain but highlighted the ongoing need for better classification tools and further research on genotype-phenotype relationships in DCM.

The corona virus disease -2019 (COVID-19) is a recently described infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 with significant cardiovascular implications. Given the increased risk for severe COVID-19 observed in adults with underlying cardiac involvement, there is concern that patients with pediatric and congenital heart disease (CHD) may likewise be at increased risk for severe infection. The cardiac manifestations of COVID-19 include myocarditis, arrhythmia and myocardial infarction.

The Fontan procedure has provided patients with single ventricle physiology extended survival into adulthood and in many cases has improved their quality of life. Atrioventricular valve regurgitation (AVVR) is common in single ventricle patients and is associated with increased risk of mortality. AVVR is more common in patients with a systemic tricuspid or common atrioventricular valve but is generally progressive irrespective of underlying valve morphology.

Histopathological changes to the peripheral vestibular system following meningitic labyrinthitis.

Laryngoscope Investig Otolaryngol

April 2020

Department of Otolaryngology Massachusetts Eye and Ear Boston Massachusetts.

Objective: While cochlear ossification is a common sequalae of meningitic labyrinthitis, less is known about the effects of meningitis on peripheral vestibular end organs. Herein, we investigate histopathologic changes in the peripheral vestibular system and cochlea in patients with a history of meningitic labyrinthitis.

Methods: Temporal bone (TB) specimens from patients with a history of meningitis were evaluated and compared to age-matched controls.

There exist many problems in science and engineering that involve optimization of an unknown or partially unknown objective function. Recently, Bayesian Optimization (BO) has emerged as a powerful tool for solving optimization problems whose objective functions are only available as a black box and are expensive to evaluate. Many practical problems, however, involve optimization of an unknown objective function subject to unknown constraints.
